Changing the Artes
Tales of Symphonia's save directory is:
<the directory where Steam is installed>\userdata\<your user id>\372360\remote

To change anything in a save file, you're going to need a Hex Editor. For this tutorial, I'm going to use HxD: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HxD

As an example I'm going to change Lloyd's artes in save slot 100 (TOSSaveData99.dat). When starting a new game, Lloyd only has Demon Fang as seen in here:

01. When you open the save file in HxD, it looks like this:

02. Choose Edit > Select block... (you can also press CTRL+E)

03. First, make sure "end-offset" and "hex" are selected. From the table above in this guide you should check what the start and end offsets are for each character. For Lloyd, Start-offset should be 5A8, while End-offset should be 5AB. Once you have done typing the correct start and end offsets, click OK.

04. If you did it correctly, the offsets from 5A8 to 5AB should be highlighted as seen in here:

05. From the table above in this guide, you should copy the correct value for that character. For Lloyd, you want to copy the FFFF7FFE.

06. Choose Edit > Paste write or you can press CTRL+B.

07. If you did it correctly, you should see "FFFF7FFE" highlighted in red. All you have to do is save the file.

08. Now start the game and load the save file you edited. You should now have all the artes for Lloyd. Enjoy not having learn and forget to switch artes ever again.

Thanks so much for the advice. Maybe this will finally help me to change their names, something I've been trying to figure out for way too long. I'll take a look at those posts, and thanks again for the help (and for this guide, too)!

@sWX

You need a tool that can either open or extract R01's TLFILE.TLDAT located in:
.\Tales of Symphonia\P12E\Data\TOS_Server\Archive\Release\R01\WIN

You can use QuickBMS and the script created for TOX/TOZ or the script modified by Kaldaien for TOS.

See these two posts for more details:

Thanks so much for the info. You're right about the Rename Gem (had tried adding it in myself), and I located the manually-written names in the dialogue, but changing those only does so much. I found the character's name in the save file, too, but like you mentioned, the changes don't stick once the save is loaded.

I haven't been able to locate the TXB folder you're referring to. Is it inside the 'steamapps > common > Tales of Symphonia > (etc etc)' folder somewhere? Would you mind pointing me in the right direction?

@sWX:

The only way you can change playable characters names permanently to is to edit the file in TLFILE's TXB folder. There are some cases where dialogues might show the character's actual name. This is because if the person who was doing the localization typed the character's name into the script instead of using the variable that stores the character's name. For the game's Synopsis, character names are typed instead of using variables that store the character names, so you would have to edit the Synopsis text as well.

Even if you add the Rename Gem back, its function is broken. Even names edited using Rename Gem will revert to default names once the save is loaded.

Great info and easy to follow. Thanks for sharing with everyone.

If I can ask, I've been trying forever to get the Name Change feature (via this method above, essentially) to work. The problem is, while the names in the file do change, and the Load Game screen displays Lloyd's changed name, once the save is loaded, everything reverts back to default.

You shared a screenshot where you seemed to have successfully gotten Raine's name to stick as Refill (something I'd like to do, as well). What am I missing besides changing her name address to the hex for "Refill"? Any other steps I'm neglecting? Thanks if you feel like sharing.
