Introduction
The guide below provides a overview of a basic Salvage Uplink defense positioning with the Engineer class, using his Bug reppellent upgrade on the platform gun - it is the main component of this build.
Basic principle
When to use this?
This emergency bunker can be made in under a minute. It will require drilling into a wall with solid space behind it - meaning there should be no adjacent tunnels or rooms.

Additionally, it would be best if at least one of your teammates is inside with you - this helps with the DPS against bugs inside chokepoints.

Please note that C4 can be used to carve out the rooms, although this may be more dangerous.

Basic setup
PLEASE NOTE: THIS IS A TOP DOWN VIEW - YOU WILL BE DIGGING A HORIZONTAL TUNNEL, not down.

IMPORTANT TO NOTE
It is essential to check if there are rooms or big openings where you want to drill - if they get opened up during drilling, the position will be compromised.
Appropriate builds
Basic equipment
Do not fret if you cant get the exact builds. These server as logical guidance.

2, 2, 1, 1
Here we maximize the mining ability of the drills, allowing you to create the emergency rooms quicker.

2, 1, 1, 3
Here we maximize the blast area of the C4, which is useful to create bugger openings or AOE larger hordes.

Build 1: The Freezer
3, 1, 2, 3, 2 + Improved thermal efficiency or Tuned Cooler
We balance between optimal flow rate and ammo, allowing for longer sustained fire in and outside the bunker.

3, 1, 3, 2, 1 + Oversized magazine or Homebrew powder
This secondary will be able to develop sustained DPS on frozen priority targets like Pratetorians.

Build 2: The Microwave DPS
1, 2, 3, 3, 1 + Lighter Tanks or Sticky Fuel
Depending on overclock, you will either apply direct flame with Wave Cooker, or use sticky flames to create chokepoint.

2, 1, 2, 2, 3 + Lighter Tanks or Sticky Fuel
Here we maximize flow and cooldown time to increase frequency of exothermic shocks we can deliver.

Additionally, the Goo Gun can be used:
3, 2, 2, 1, 3 + Disperser Compound or Goo Bomber special
This build works to slow down oncoming enemies through the chokepoints, while your team does the majority of the DPS.

Bunker application
Step 1: drill a horizontal tunnel at 0°, 85-100% of your mining meter, 8-14 meters length
https://youtu.be/oeeJCvvkJWU
Notice how the tunnel is slightly angled upwards - this allows for corpses to roll down.

Step 2: drill out or C4 a small room as 1st defensive position.
https://youtu.be/d_eMd0dhmWo
This is the basic position - the tunnel acts as the chokepoint. However we should extend to make it safer.
ADDITIONALLY, to make a more flatter floor in the rooms, you can attach the C4 directly above your head, not in front of you. The explosion carve will make a more flatter floor.

Step 3: Repeat steps 1 and 2 (one more time)
https://youtu.be/F5VHk4Jofcw
Notice how if we retreat to second room, we still have line of sight towards. The picture is actually a bad example, as for having this curve obstructs some line of sight.

Step 4: start making escape tunnel with a horizontal line if possible
https://youtu.be/HIeg5MvHNn0
Notice how the escape tunnel is looping towards the caves in a shape of "U" - this would allow for escape into open area for maneuverability.

Step 5: extend escape tunnel towards an opening
https://youtu.be/88EYbhQsUKk
DO NOTE, that we wont create an exit in our escape tunnel just yet - this should be done if team needs to give up ground.

Optional step: create corner spots for easier team positioning
Important remarks
  • If you feel a hard wave is coming, call out/communicate to your team that you want to make this position. Alternatively, pinging the wall after wave is announced will occasionally cause your team flock to you, waiting for the bunker to be made.
  • After completing a minimum of 1-2 rooms, your job is to assist your team with applying DPS into the chokepoint.
  • If your team seems to be doing well without you, proceed to make the escape tunnel in case you feel you need it.
  • In case you end up alone or with 1 person in the room, applying DPS would be priority since part od the horde will be focused on people who didnt enter the room in time.
Conclusion

@MaxBrn from my experience this has not occured. Like I said earlier in thread, feel free to make a uncompleted/shorter tunnel (can extend it anytime if driller is paying attention) - for your ease of mind.

Doesn't this potentially create enough distance within the tunnel structure that bugs could spawn in behind or in the escape tunnel?

the D.E.B or debora for short

@ᴼDAE unless your team runs poison related builds, it should matter as much. For cryo, there is room for personal changes for sure

What is the logic behind using Volatile Bullets over Acid-Tipped Bullets in a build using the Cryo Cannon?

Also your Cryo-build doesntt seem to synergise well. 32132 or 32232 are better options.

@Forty_ Typically this issue would not occur in my experience. However if it gives you peace of mind, make the second horizontal tunnel without the expanded room and expand if necessary.

my team uses a version of this strategy often, but with only one room. Is there ever an issue with bugs spawning in the bunker because of how far the bunker extends?

That drill build could only be made worse by taking Bloody Cold Drills. The cooling rate from Magnetic refrigeration is BiS because you never want to overheat, as the base cooldown from 99% heat is faster than 100% even with 2b.
As well, taking hardened drill tips actually LOSES fuel efficiency, as a full tank with only 1 drill speed mod drills ~146 meters, but with 2 you only get ~132 meters. and Because there's only 1 mod in the third tier, Drill speed, you should either take extra fuel or damage in the first tier.
Everything else is okay, but I'd put a disclaimer to ask before making bunkers, as they're rather controversial and can result in you getting kicked for making them if the host is against them.
