Description of the mod :

After working on some French steam locomotives, I decided to start working on american steam locomotive so my first mod is this PRR S-2 Steam Turbine Locomotive.

I really like the PRR S2 locomotive, such an incredible piece of engineering that tried to allow steam engine to last longer in the transport industry by using new way to use steam.

I tried to made this loco as easy as possible to drive.
I made everything concerning the steam engine automaticaly managed so you have no chance of boiler overpressure, explosion or overheat (but you still need to put coal and refill boiler with water).

To start the boiler you only have to turn on the key on the top of the firebox.
On the left side of the firebox you can switch on the water pumps to refill the boiler.

Features :

In-game :
  • Manufacturing : 100% vanilla components (with some .xml edited parts)
  • Spawn : can be spawned on all vanilla workbenches
  • Mass : around 15000 blocks
  • Power : enough torque to move a mountain (some people tested it with 18 freight cars)

Small history of this prototype locomotive :

The Pennsylvania Railroad's S2-Class was a prototype of steam turbine locomotive designed and built by Baldwin Locomotive Works and Westinghouse Electric & Manufacturing Co for the Pennsylvania RailRoad company.
This steam powered turbine engine was an attempt to prolong the dominance of the steam locomotive by adapting technology that had been widely accepted in the marine industry.

Only one locomotive was built, the #6200, in September 1944. The chassis of the S2 class has been modified from 4-8-4 to 6-8-6 due to issue in light steel availability in war time, that resulted in usage of heavier steel to the construction.
Due to this modification, the PRR S2 was the only example of the 6-8-6 wheel arrangement in the Whyte notation.

This loco had a very short career, during war time this locomotive pulled express freight trains and carried military troops. After the war, it pulled some prestigious passenger trains between New-York and Chicago but get quickly withdrawed from service in 1949 then got scrapped in Pennsylvania after only 103,000 miles.

@da-adult @Lard God : the engine works perfectly fine, you have to turn on the key button on the firebox then you have to wait until the boiler is hot enough to generate steam

it won't move

How do you actually get it to move?

@the bean gamer : On the left side of the tender you can open a panel. Behind this panel there are 2 hose anchor to pump water into the tender.
- the blue one is to pump in fresh water
- the green one is to pump in sea water (there is an additional desalinator filter).
To refill the tender you have to connect one of the 2 ports to an external source (water tank or pump) and activate the pump on the associated panel

@Gurnie44 : Main driving wheels cannot be powered without pistons so secondary wheels are powered.
Gurnie44 21.4.2024 klo 5.56
how are the wheels powered?
