SNCF CC7100 series

The CC 7100 is a series of electric locomotives built by Alsthom for the SNCF from 1952. They are derived from the two prototypes CC 7001 and CC 7002 built in 1949 which experimented with the principle of total adhesion for power locomotives. Twice, the CC 7100s broke the rail speed record, the most famous attempt being that of 28 March 1955, when the CC 7107 reached 325 km/h (officially raised to 331 km/h to match the record of the BB 9004 so as not to offend Alsthom in the face of the performance of the rival Jeumont-Schneider prototype).
They were used to pull SNCF flag trains on the main electrified arteries in the south-west and south-east at 150 and then 160 km/h. However, from the 1960s onwards, they were relegated to pulling less noble trains when new series of machines appeared, first the BB 9200 and then the CC 6500.
Their major general overhaul (GRG) in the 1970s modified their appearance with the removal of the skirts, the deletion of the corner lanterns, the addition of red lights near the headlights, and a modification of the front face (windscreen, gutter, etc.)
They will nevertheless continue to operate until 2001, pulling omnibuses and goods trains on the Imperial artery after having all been entrusted to the Avignon depot.
