SNCF Cadres

Conceived in the mid-1920s, cadres can be considered the forerunners of containers. They were more or less standardised boxes, mainly used by long-distance removers at a time when road transport was still in its early stages.
In France, the OCEM was responsible for defining and building different types of cadres. After the war and the appearance of the SNCF, the Division des Etudes de Voitures et wagons (DEV) will take over the studies of cadres, which will take more and more the name of containers facing the American influence. The CNC was created in 1948 to organise their transport. But from the 1970s onwards, cadres disappeared to make way for ISO standard containers.
