Cunard Line's SS Servia Ocean Liner

In 1881 the newly reformed Cunard Line launched its answer to the impressive young fleet of ships built by their competitor, the White Star Line. This vessel, the first ocean liner built out of steel, was the SS Servia.

STARTING THE VESSEL
Upon boarding the ship at the mid-ship ladders, head forward along the promenade until you reach a door labeled "Cabin Class Stairwell". Go through the door and proceed down the stairs and down the Starboard side of the vessel, There you should see a door labeled "Engine Room(Crew Only)". Pass through this door and descend the ladder into the engine room.

Once in there, turn the key labeled "Coolant Pumps" and proceed through the door labeled "Boiler Room 2".

Once you are in the boiler room, make your way around to the front of the boiler and press the button labeled "Light Boiler". Repeat this process in Boiler room 1 through the door labeled "Boiler Room 1".

After both boilers are lit, backtrack back up the ladder in the engine room and the cabin class staircase back up to Promenade deck. At the forward end of promenade deck is a set of stairs leading up to boat deck, there you will find the bridge. Once you arrive at the bridge advance the throttle labeled "Engine Room Telegraph" and the ship should start moving.

PLEASE NOTE: It may take a few moments for the ship to build up steam after the boilers are lit, so the ship may not start moving right away.

SHIP HISTORY
Built in 1881 by the J & G Thompson shipyard in Clydebank, the SS Servia was the first large ocean liner constructed primarily out of steel instead of iron. At the time of her construction she was the second largest vessel ever built, only bested by the Great Eastern.

Servia was also the first Cunarder to have electric lighting on board, a rare luxury in the early 1880s.

Her career was ultimately rather uneventful. She served on the express routes of the North Atlantic connecting Liverpool with New York until 1893 when the larger liners Campania and Lucania joined the fleet, at which point she was transferred to intermediate routes.

With the outbreak of the Boer War in 1899 she was requisitioned to transport British troops to South Aftrica. Following the end of the conflict she was broken up at Thos. W. Ward in Sheffield.
