Cities of Wonder 3

This is the spiritual successor to Cities of Wonder 2 by Kurthakon

Do not run this mod with Cities of Wonder 2 or Holding Sprawl

Features
Any Level 4 Castle or City can be upgraded to Level 5, the Burge.
  • Any Burge can be upgraded to a Metropolis
  • Any Metropolis can be upgrade to a Megalopolis
  • Level 5, 6, & 7 Castles and Cities have custom 3d Models (COW3 adds over 80 new 3D models to the game
  • Burges have access to unique common buildings with similar bonuses to Special Buildings
  • Finally, holdings that you give special attention (and gold!) to will actually be special in-game!
  • Full Holding Sprawl Logic - Do NOT use this mod with the Holding Sprawl mod
Historical Burges - Holdings that were major cities during the medieval era all start as Burges
  • One-time event to choose whether or not to populate Burges if you add the mod to an existing save
  • 867 Start Date
    • 28 Holdings across the map start as Burges
  • 1066 Start Date
    • 11 Additional holdings start as Burges
Tribal Holdings can be upgraded to a 3rd Level


New Features in 1.10.1 Release
  • 75 New 3d Models!
    • 63 New Models for Castle Levels 5, 6, and 7.
    • 10 New Models for Burge Walls at Castle and City Levels 6 and 7.
    • The Burge models that already existed have been reworked so that they look better and are more performant
  • Unique Special Buildings for every Level 5 Castle and City
    • When you build a Level 5 City or Castle, you will receive an event asking you which unique building your city possesses.⠀The building you choose will be built automatically along with your Burge and will occupy a common building slot, even though you can't build these buildings normally.
    • Don't worry, you also get an extra building slot so this building doesn't take up one of your limited spots.
  • Full integration of Sprawl
    • This replaces the limited implementation that was already present in Cities of Wonder 3
  • Some Special Building Models have been moved slightly to avoid clipping with Burges, such as in Paris and London
  • Full code and 3D Model review to improve performance
    • Issues that created persistent issues in the error log have been addressed
    • Overall modsize has been reduced from 385mb to 235mb even with the addition of 75 new 3d models
    • Compatibility has been improved so that COW3 will now work with other building mods
      • Issues will remain if COW3 is used with other mods that edit the actual castle or city building
      • If another mod edits common buildings, special buildings, or adds new buildings, it should now work with COW3 just fine

Changes & Deprecated Features
  • Restoring ancient cities like Minoa on Krete or Carthage in Tunis
    • The code and 3d models I created for these mechanics was done early in my modding career. It was unstable and, to be frank, not very good. For now, it is easy to remove this altogether and add it back in later when I have the time to do it right.
  • Removal of Slavic Burges
    • The code and 3d models I created for these mechanics was done early in my modding career. It was unstable and, to be frank, not very good. For now, it is easy to remove this altogether and add it back in later when I have the time to do it right.
  • Support for Sinews of War
    • Sinews of War is outdated and, currently, an update is not expected. If the mod is ever updated, I'll revisit adding compatibility back into COW3.
  • Removal of COW Unique Buildings
    • The unique common buildings caused incompatibility between COW3 and any other mod that adds new common buildings. This change means those incompatibilities no longer exist!

Compatibility Notes

  • More Bookmarks+ has integrated COW3 directly into that mod. However, that is a custom integration, so what works using the base COW3 mod and what works with Bookmarks+ might not be exactly the same
  • Medieval Arts (MA) is one of my all-time favorite mods. I have attempted to make COW3 work with MA without the need of a compatch. If you notice issues, please report them on my Discord[discord.gg]. There are known issues with the placement of some of MA's special buildings that overlap with the COW3 graphics. This will not be fixed anytime soon. I may address it later, but the mods are separate entities and I do not edit the map or locators.
  • While there are a lot of compatches for COW3 and other mods, some by me and some by other modders, those are all for older versions of the COW3 and are deprecated. Moving forward, I will only create compatches for mods that have a significatly larger player base that COW3.
  • As always, put COW3 at the end of your modlist and report any issues to the bugs channel on my Discord[discord.gg]
