Hail Mary

Beskrivelse
Hail Mary is a mod I originally made for myself for fighting the V.O.I.D faction back in 1.3 (using a modified version of the 1.2 mod), and with the release of the 1.4 version of V.O.I.D ( http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2883208829 ), I thought I would tie up a few of the loose ends and polish it a bit so I can publish it!

This is my first time publishing a mod but I've made a few personal mods in the past, so I'll do my best to ensure everything is functional and to a high standard of quality, but I might make some mistakes here and there (if you notice anything feel free to let me know!)

[[ What is Hail Mary? ]]

Hail Mary is a series of mod that comes with weapons and drugs that give you a fighting chance against much, MUCH stronger opponents.

Designed specifically as a balanced way of giving players a fighting chance against the V.O.I.D faction (but of course can work for fighting against other peculiar types of opponents), these weapons struggle to compete with other weapons of similar value when it comes to an average fight due to having strange stats and relying upon unorthodox tactics.

While in your average raid, the weapons are far too inefficient to effectively take down your average band of raiders, and the drugs far too dangerous to be worth using, against a single, or limited number of targets, specifically those too strong for other, more traditional weapons to handle...

These weapons start to show their potential, and against enemies that would otherwise completely wipe out your base, the intense drawbacks of the drugs start to become a little more justified.

[[ Balance ]]

To create the weapons and drugs in the Hail Mary mod, you need to both grow a specific type of flower and do some specific research.

In addition to this, the weapons themselves have pretty sub-par stats on paper, and the drugs either potentially lethal to consume or with seemingly short-sighted benefits.

In return, these weapons have the potential to completely turn your game around, and give you a fighting chance against overpowered factions.

But I should mention, these aren't supposed to "balance" mods like V.O.I.D, they are still ridiculously strong and they will probably still kill you, so think of this as a sliver of hope, rather than a solution to the problem.

[[ Strategy ]]

(This section is primarily about fighting V.O.I.D with this mod, but should be applicable to other powerful factions)

After playing against V.O.I.D using the mod for a little while now, I've had the chance to test a few theories out in the field and I wanted to share how this mod in particular can be used to the best effect, since the tools provided in this mod aren't the most intuitive to use.

Early Game: In the early game, if you can't afford to craft the weapons to defeat your opponent, I'd recommend trying to set up an overhead mountain collapse trap (by shooting a weak pillar near some cover to bait the AI there) to kill anyone who raids you who is too difficult, while you don't get any loot from this, it can be a quick and dirty "get out of jail free" card.

Besides this, numbers are your friend, giving a bunch of colonists a crucifier gives each of them a low, but significant chance of cleaving their target in half, and those chances add up with enough colonists (some virtue or devotion doesn't hurt here)

Mid-Game: Mid-game is where you want to find some way of safely downing a powerful enemy to steal their equipment and potentially recruit them, if you have a crafter capable of it, a single judgement can be enough to get your foot in the door and get your first safely downed opponent, but it's an expensive investment, both materially and time-wise.

Alternatively a extricates can help quickly break down a shield-belt in a pinch and allow someone with a long shot or ave maria to land the final blow, someone on yggdrasil is very nice here to have as a distraction, especially if you can get them in melee range.

Late-Game: When you actually have the tools to start going toe-to-toe with your opponent, virtue can be used to gain the upper hand if you need to close the gap, so long as you can afford the draw-backs. Yggdrasil can also work nicely as an emergency tool to save a colonist whos in danger, while it probably won't help you win the fight unless used sparingly, it can still be valuable. If you have an extra colonists lying around, devotion can be a good tool for additional combat strength or for just getting more done around the colony while some of your colonists are down from virtue or yggdrasil, so long as you can afford to lose them in the long-run.

Ultimately the Hail Mary tools aren't sustainable in the long term and are more there to help you temporarily gain a fighting chance, the sooner you can transition away from them the better, but even once you have a sufficient fighting force, having a few drugs or ave marias prepared is usually a good idea.

[[ Final notes ]]

I haven't had the chance to fully test a lot of these weapons in a full game, while they were made for a modified 1.3 version of the V.O.I.D faction, it was pretty unstable and I didn't get a great chance to see how these tools performed in the long-term, but with the release of the 1.4 version, I'll currently using these mods in my own personal game to test their balance and try and find any peculiar break points..

If you are willing to work around some potentially unbalanced tools, I hope that you will consider giving Hail Mary a chance for your "fighting against overpowered faction" needs.

Have a great day, and remember, even when all seems lost, so long as you aren't dead, you aren't done.

It gives underdogs a shot at pulling off the impossible.
It's become absolutely essential in my loadout!

Works great on 1.5.

Since this is a simple XML-only mod with no assemblies, it should work fine on 1.6 as well (though I haven't tested it on the preview build).

1.5 soon?

Oh my god this is beautiful and criminally under-used. All of these are great but I especially love the Yggdrasil.

@Chicken Plucker Thank you so much!! I'm so honoured that you saw my humble little mod! Thank you for all of the things you do for the Rimworld community, the game wouldn't feel the same without you and your work!

Hey Aqua, love your work! Very cool to see the resistance fighting the good fight making worldbreaking weapons! Had a good chuckle seeing a V.O.I.D. advisor get swatted like a fly with a giant cricket bat looking object in the previews. Hope to see your other future work get better and better, cheers!

@Kokorocodon That’s exactly how I felt!! I love the design and aesthetic of VOID but trying to stand a chance against them with vanilla tools (and even most modded ones) is basically impossible. I’m still working on the balance of the mod and adding new tools to allow players to combat VOID in different ways, so if you come across anything that feels unbalanced or have any thoughts feel free to let me know!

@Kin Thank you! I hope your vanilla run goes well!! If you do end up giving this a shot, feel free to let me know if you find anything you think anything needs changing!

You are a saint for making this. I was using the most OP mods I could muster against the VOID but these fucks are simply too strong and I always suffer. Trully I don't want to fell like I'm cheating but against the VOID what even is cheating?

Thank you for this one and thank you for giving it proper drawbacks.

Looks awesome. Still doing a vanilla run before starting modded, but I will add this to the mod list.
