Carthago siege historical battle legendary guide and tips

Hi guys, having trouble for the carthage historical battle in Legendary difficulty?
I will try to help you to accelerate the fall of Carthago on a slow but safe way for our dear roman soldiers.


First part is about battle preparation.

Second about how to deal with the range units/artillery

Third is about the units in cap circle and the counter attack.

Get ready for the siege
-Before you start the battle be sure you have more than one hour of free time because it may take a while.
-Retrat and re-form : as long as your ennemy have more troops and artillery you have to start with a global retreat of all your ground forces, leave the siege tower behind you. This in order to be out of ennemy artillery range.
-human sacrifice for Jupiter leave behind you one bad quality unit (i think you have one vigiles) they will waste ennemy artillery munition, put them in a one line formation and half hide behind the hills. They will avoid most of the shoots and when they get shoot they will loose one or two guys.
-gather the forces they're is no real place for you fleet to land inside the town (not enough place, on a dangerous area) so just make them land outside the town, out of ennemy shoot range and join the global force. You just keep the artillery ship, he will make the main breach
-precious rocks turn off auto fire of you artillery it's important to save your munitions.
To the breach
Carthago units:
-Weak range units defending the wall
-Peltats units mostly defending the gate
-Some artillery hanging around the streets

Rome units:
-Your artillery ship
- war puppys
-Your cavalery (without general unit)
-4 hastati


i will find a way or make one Use your arillery ship to open a breach on the wall where the weak rang units are, we will take care of peltats later

Reckless artillery it can happen that ennemy artillery leave the town using the breach, if it happen don't give them the time to shoot and start the attack.


begining of the end use your cavalery to rush to the breach, ennemy will have the time to shoot once or two maximum, once inside go cap the tower next to the ennemy weak range units and kill the scorpions and arty that may wait for you.
You can support your cavalery with some hastati in a tower but don't take any risk if you're not sure that ennemys arty have run out of munition.

brainless AI Once the tower are neutral the archer will usually go down and meet your cavalery in mele. Once it happen it's time for the hastati to come they wont take any fire as long as tower are neutral and archers are enjoying suicide on your cavalery.

Peltats threat once the archers dead and the tower cap you can go to the door where peltats are waiting, once again if you cap the doors ennemy peltats should leave the wall and get a warm welcome from your hastati waiting on the door cap circle. It's safer to fight them down as long as some artillery on the back of the town may shoot at you if you're on the wall and if they come down they will arrive one by one feeding dogs and swords.


Hound You can use your puppys who are very effectiv against light units, use them wisely on ennemy peltats or arty, don't use them close to a town cap circle or they will attack and get killed by the heavy infantry

The ennemy will stay defending the cap circle until they get attacked by mele or close rang units they're is two way to get over them without casuality:

Artillery threat Take your artillery inside the town found a nice place from which you can shoot at close rang on the cap circle, put some hastati velites in front to block a counter attack.
As long as arty have more munition as in normal battle you can manage to do crazy casuality shooting at close range on compact carthago infantry.
Once ennemy have heavy looses don't wast munition on scattered survivors, just go to an other place to shoot on a other cap circle. My artillery manage to do about 1500 kills (1000 for one 500 for the other one that i lost in counter attack time because i didn't know about this scripted counter attack)

tower wayif you're lucky one of the cap tower will be able to shoot at your ennemys in the cap circle making some freekills, it take a long time but it can put many heavy infantry down.



Counter attack At one moment -(it can be if you cap a base, if you've killed all units of a cap circle or if you start a close combat)- they will be a counter attack of cavalery, elephants and two sacred hoplites.
(It's for them that you have to keep triari and velites in front of your artillery)
They will not wait each other to attack.
-Cavalery will arrive first and won't stand a chance again a triarii defensive formation, save the rapid reload skill of velites for the elephant.
-Elephant that arrive next, you can try an arty shoot on them when they're far away but the velites will do the job while triari block them.
-Sacred hoplites arrive last, no miracle solution for them, it will take a while to kill them you can try to put the velites behind them or some hastati, in legendary difficulty they wont run away whatever you do.
The fall
Once the counter attack down if you have use the artillery carefully ennemy should have very few units left and you should have lost only your cavalery some hastati against the peltats and few triari against the elephant/sacred hoplites heavy attack. And you can manage to win without any problem.

Your guide was awesome. It was detailed yet succinct and cleared up a lot of misconceptions I had about the influence mechanics - it will certainly save me a lot of money on future campaigns.
