Kill Quality

There are three kinds of hit,
Hitting the red zones during Dead Eye should score you a fatal or critical hit.
Fatal = The animal dies instantly.
Critical = You may have to follow your prey until it collapses. (or if you’re using poison arrows)
Normal = Ruin the pelt.

Legendary Buck	You'll find the Legendary Buck in the black bone forest at the western foot of Mt. Shan, northwest of Strawberry in West Elizabeth. The Legendary Buck pelt is valuable, and the Legendary Buck Antler trinket is great to get early on as it increases the quality of all your skins. Legendary Bluegill	Special Lake Lure	The Legendary Bluegill can be found south of Clemens Point off the shore of Flat Iron Lake. You will discover it if you accept Kieran's offer to go fishing during Chapter 3.
Legendary Catfish	Special River Lure	The Legendary Catfish can be fished for in the creek deltas to the west of Sisika Penitentiary on Sisika Island.
Legendary Chain Pickerel	Special River Lure	Fish along the Dakota running northwest of Flatneck Station.
Legendary Gar	Special Swamp Lure	The Legendary Gar can be found in the marshy swamp between Lakay and Lagras in the Bayou Nwa region of Lemoyne.
Legendary Largemouth Bass	Special River Lure	You can fish for this Legendary Largemouth Bass southeast of Lake Don Julio, on the shore of the San Luis River in New Austin.
Legendary Muskie	Special River Lure	To catch the Legendary Muskie, head to the lighthouse at the south end of the Van Horn Trading Post in New Hanover.
Legendary Perch	Special Lake Lure	You'll find the Legendary Perch swimming in Elysian Lake, southwest of Annesburg in the Roanoke Ridge region of New Hanover.
Legendary Redfin Pickerel	Special Lake Lure	You can fish for the Legendary Redfin Pickerel in the largest pool of Stillwater Creek, between Thieve's Landing and MacFarlane's Ranch in New Austin.
Legendary Rock Bass	Special Lake Lure	You'll find the Legendary Rock Bass in the Aurora Basin, at the head of the Lower Montana River to the west of Manzanita Trading Post in the Tall Trees region of West Elizabeth.
Legendary Salmon	Special Lake Lure	The Legendary Salmon swims in the cold waters of Lake Isabella, far to the northwest of Valentine in the Grizzlies West region of Ambarino. You catch it independently or as part of the Stranger quest A Fisher of Fish.
Legendary Smallmouth Bass	Special Lake Lure	Fish in Lake Owanjila, to the west of Strawberry between the Big Valley and Tall Trees regions of West Elizabeth.
Legendary Sturgeon	Special River Lure	Fish off the railroad bridge over the mouth of the Lannahechee River (or rowing out a boat), between Saint Denis and Rhodes in the southern part of Lemoyne.
Legendary Trout	Special River Lure	The Legendary Trout can be found in the basin far north of Annesburg, in the northeast corner of New Hanover, up the Kamassa River from Brandywine Drop.
Legendary Northern Pike	Special River Lure	The Legendary Northern Pike can be found in the waters near O'Creagh's Run. It can only be caught in the stranger mission "The Veteran - II", and is referred to as "Tyrant" by Hamish Sinclair.
Legendary Channel Catfish	(can't actually be caught)	It is rumored to inhabit in the San Luis River, south of Benedict Point. Fishermen have tried for years to catch this fish but no one has ever been successful.

Blackwater	A fifth Trapper Location can be found in the far south-west region of West Elizabeth, far to the West of Blackwater in the region of Tall Trees. Follow the river that heads down Tall Trees, and look for where the road curves East to climb the hill, where you'll find the Trappers location. This location is only accessible after Chapter 6.

harken23, cant really help you more than that badgers only come out in the dawn/dusk/night and are skittish and hard to see since they "glide" along the ground like a litte snot, is as big a two squirrls and almost never makes a sound.
But i think they go for both the baits.

A Sassy Dragon, i see, dont mind the black and red colors on the text, my understanding is that the red text is only to highlight the preferred weapon, as you see a rifle kill on a massive is still a perfect pelt but the font is black because its not rockstars recomendation for that animal since its harder to get a clean kill on a massive animal with a rifle since it does less damage, while a sniper rifle makes more damage and an easy kill on a massive.
same if for the sniper on a large but reverse since a large animal can move faster and is harder to scope whit a sniper and therefore swap of color on rifle and sniper rifle.
Punchline is that it does not matter if your a good shoot.
This is MY understanding of the difference in color on the fonts.

I'm hunting for Badgers, just a regular (perfect) pelt for crafting. Where are they? I'm searching around the spot on land where the Legendary Bluegill icon is, where there's a Squirrel and (I think) a Badger icon on the map. I've been there for 3 days, 24 hours, and haven't even seen one. And I've never even seen one, so they're not in the Compendium. It also says in the game that Chantarells can be used to craft Herbivore Bait. But that doesn't even seem to exist (Potent Herbivore Bait does, but doesn't need Chantarells...

no, i understand the quality and using the right weapon, but take the rifle for instance. A headshot on a Medium is a black "Perfect" a headshot on a Large is a red "Perfect" and a headshot on a Massive is a black "perfect" again. I don't know what the colors mean.

Right now, I'm just primarily doing my hunting with a rolling block and a varmint rifle in case I see a nice rabbit or something, but, i just don't know if I should be doing something different.

A Sassy Dragon, all pelts/skins have a 3-star quality rating as a default, you can never get a 1-star pelt to become a 3-star pelt even with a perfect kill.
The pelt need to be 3-star before the animal is killed, and to maintain the 3-star you need a perfelt/critical kill.
Did that make it clearer or even more muddy for you?

I have a hard time deciphering the kill quality chart. Like, if I'm hunting Bison, do I have to use the sniper rifle and score a headshot or critical, but can I also use like, an Elephant rifle or some other rifle using proper ammunition. I'm not sure what the difference between the red Perfect text and the bold black text
