A car series is like a little code that can be used to describe every version of a car which share a platform. For example, a car series code is code is E36. This was the series code for every BMW 3-Series built from 1990 to 2000. This includes all 5 of its body styles: Coupe, Convertible, Hatchback, Sedan and Wagon. Series codes also apply to every variant of a car, so in the context of the E36 example, it is everything from a 316i to a M3. However, the series code does not apply to a 5-Series because they are not the same platfrom.

The first digit of the Series code is the car size - 'M' for 'Midsize'
The second digit is what generation of this car size this is - '1' for the first generation
The third digit is what body style - 'S' for 'Sedan', 'W' for 'Wagon' and 'C' for 'Coupe'
The fourth and final digit is what facelift the car is - '1' for not facelifted, '2' for first facelift
Please note that the series codes containing 'S' and 'W' only apply to the Legran.
The series codes containing 'C' only apply to the Wendover.
