~{How to Get Started}~
First, go to this site[www.toonhud.com] and sign in to Steam. After that, click on your profile picture, then you will be brought to the "my themes" page. From here, click the button with the plus on it, and now we can get to customizing!

~{Customizing Your HUD}~
Next, we need to customize your HUD. There are plenty of options here from color changes, to crosshair changes, to even more advanced stuff like removing things from the main menu, or removing the spy disguise animation. You can customize this to your heart's content, you can even add custom fonts as long as you have them installed on your PC and know the name of the fonts. For instance, I was able to create one using Super Mario fonts![toonhud.com]

You can also customize your TF2 main menu wallpaper to a certain extent. On ToonHUD's website, they have a "wallpapers" page. Should be right next to the "search" option, like this:

Click it, and take whatever one you want. Follow the same instructions for installing the HUD itself, and take the .vpk file inside the extracted folder, and put it in your TF2 custom folder. You can also download some custom wallpapers from sites like GameBanana and use them as well.
~{Installing the HUD}~
Now that you have customized your HUD, we need to put it in the game files. If you've ever watched a tutorial on YouTube or read a guide that teaches you how to put other HUDs into the game, then it's the same here. First, you need to download your custom HUD from ToonHud, the downloading screen should look like this

Now you'll need to put it in the game files, the easiest way to access the files is by going to your library, clicking on TF2, clicking the settings button, and then pressing "browse local files". Then go to a folder called "tf". Now just leave that there for now, open another file explorer window, right click on the zip folder you just downloaded and click "extract all". After that's done, go inside the extracted folder, you will find another folder called "toonhud." Now copy this folder to a folder in your tf folder called "custom" (if you don't have it, create one, make sure it's all lowercase).

~{You're Done!}~
Now that you've customized your hud and put it in your files, now you have successfully made and implemented a custom hud! Now, just boot up TF2 and enjoy! If you have any problems, let me know in the comment section, and if this was helpful, please consider rating this guide!

No moss here, for one, sorry for the late response, and assuming you mean a custom wallpaper, yes! To a certain extent, that is. On ToonHUD's website, they have a "wallpapers" page. Should be right next to the "search" option, like this https://imgur.com/gallery/2wMY3Y4 . Click it, and take whatever one you want. Follow the same instructions for installing the HUD itself, and take the .vpk file inside the extracted folder, and put it in your TF2 custom folder. I believe you can also download custom wallpapers from sites like GameBanana and use them as well. Hope this helps!

Also, yeah, it is a little scummy to sell StartAllBack, or StartBack, whatever it's actually called. I mean, I guess they have to pay the bills somehow!

Is there a way to change to a custom background?

also off-topic lol: Start...Back (there are two programs with similar name)? I don't use them. I'd be glad if they open-source them instead of making money upon it. Yet it's still good to use tho, I don't like paying for a little tool that could be better if it's free.

I'm using a program called StartAllBack, which also replaces the start menu to look more like Win7. It costs money though, but I'm used to wasting my money on stuff. After all, I play TF2

This guide is awesome but I have an unrelated question. In the screenshots, your taskbar looks like a windows xp/vista taskbar. How did you do this?

Oh. Maybe you should try it again, maybe it's gotten better! If not, then continue using star_'s hud then.
