So, you like building and have likely stumbled upon Stormworks (if you haven't, then I don't know why you are here). Here are some common mistakes that lots of new players make while building.

Planning is important!

You always want to brainstorm and plan before building. One of the mistakes I often make is I just end up jumping into a project without thinking about what I want or what I want it to do.

Think about what you want your creation to do. Whether it be for exploration, rescue, or something with the weapons DLC? Will it fly, drive, float, or do all three? Always think about what you want your build to be before starting a project.

Plan out what it will look like. Make drawings, 3D Models, or use reference images if you are making a replica. Not having proper planning will lead to confusion about while building and can lead to abandoning a project due to not knowing what to do next. Trust me, I'd know.

Steps of the building process.

When building something, there is a certain order you will want to do things in. Often times, I will start building at a random point, and like I said in the last section, give up on the project because I don't know what to do next. For an example, I will use the building process of a boat. I assume you will already have had the necessary drawings and models ready to build.

1) Design your hull or download a hull of of the workshop. You will want to make sure your ship floats before moving on to the next step.

2) Design/place your engines, fuel tanks, and rudders. Have some rudimentary controls on the hull from which you can control your ship. Make sure to troubleshoot any problems with the engines, steering, and fuel flow before moving on to the next step.

3) Design your superstructure. This includes things like above-deck compartments and your bridge. If necessary, add weight to the bottom of your hull to prevent the ship from tipping if the superstructure makes it top heavy. move your controls to the bridge and make them more detailed so you can control all aspects of the ships engines and movement.

4) Add any necessary equipment and tools to suit the purpose of the ship. If it is for rescue, you may want to add lifeboats, winches, medical beds, and things like that. For exploration, add things like beds, maybe a docking bay for a submarine/smaller boat, and add lots of equipment like thermal suits and dive gear. If it is for military purposes load it with guns, health packs and turrets.

5) Design your hull interior. Add rooms like a mess hall, sleeping quarters and medical bays.

6) Add details. Things such as life rings, lights, and even equipment like cranes. This is a good time to paint your ship as well.

7) Mass troubleshooting. Fix any problems you can find.

8) Upload to the workshop or keep it to yourself! The choice is yours.
