Dragon Cult - Fan Faction for Root by Leder Games

A variation of Fangus Khan

This is now the second iteration of this faction, now called Dragon Cult ( previously called Ancient Basilisk). This version has a closer thematic link to Lizard Cult.

This is also an iteration of Fangus Khan. Fangus Khan is what originally inspired me to make custom content for Root. My very first scribbled down Root variant notes were for a alternate Fangus Khan, which below came out of. Per Holmgren's The Voracious Wyrm motivated me to finish it, and some of his excellent ideas have snuck into this version.

The intention is to create a faction that fits better into the systems of Root. I kept Fangus Khan’s main ideas in place: a BIG snake monster that “eats” warriors, and then you hilariously watch warriors go down its digestive tract …effectively keeping warriors hostage in the meantime...similar to the Riverfolk and coffin makers. The Dragon Cult version has further removed a few others original mechanics like laying eggs, and creating armies from its hatchlings.

This has limited play-tested. So Im sure it has glaring issues, but I tried to make something that fits better into the already established systems of root and therefore could be developed into something that could work.

Thematically, this version differs a lot. The original Fangus Khan fills the thematic role of a beastly Kaiju. The Great Dragon is more of a Cthulhu, dragon archetype, an intelligent ancient being that has awakened from a long hibernation and has a host worshipers. Its followers are an offshoot sect of the Lizard Cult. The Dragon Cult believe it is the return of the Great Dragon as the prophecies have foretold. While the rest of the Lizard Cult believe its just a really big Wyrm, and not the actual Great Dragon.

One thing that thematically didn't make sense is how Fangus Khan would Craft and draw cards, since both these actions are representations of help from the woodland denizens. I couldn’t reconcile thematically why the denizens would help a creature bent on eating them all. However it makes sense if some of the denizens worship it and based an entire religion around it.

BTW, large snake like “wyrms” are apparently cannon in the world of root. Check the uploaded images from one of the Root RPG rulebooks. It talks of a large ancient wyrm that hunts and eats denizens.
