Le elettromotrici di prima generazione vennero consegnate contemporaneamente all'ETR 200, elettrotreno punta di diamante del regime fascista.
Rispetto a quest'ultimo, ne ereditano direttamente sia il concetto tecnico e sia il design, con opportune modifiche specifiche per il servizio cui erano chiamati a svolgere.

La prima serie è rappresentata dalle ALe 792 (con posti di sola seconda classe) e dalle ALe 882 (mista seconda e terza classe). Questi rotabili erano pensati per viaggiare in composizione singola, quindi totalmente indipendenti; su entrambe i lati trovava posto la testata aerodinamica a "testa di vipera" tipica del suddetto elettrotreno di prima generazione. Nel corso della loro carriera, queste automotrici non subirono rilevanti modifiche (eccetto l'installazione di porte elettro-pneumatiche intorno agli anni 60).

La seconda serie è rappresentata dalla costruzione delle prime ALe 790, subito seguite dalle ALe 880 (stesso discorso della prima serie, una con posti di sola seconda classe e l'altra mista seconda/terza). Queste automotrici vennero costruite prive di cabine aerodinamiche, sostituite da frontali a testata piatta con intercomunicanti a scomparsa. Questa scelta era data dal fatto che si era reso necessario accoppiare più unità, al fine di ottenere dei treni a composizione variabile (sulle automotrici di prima serie la questione era complicata, appunto perchè entrambe le testate erano aerodinamiche e ciò impediva la movimentazione di persone tra le vetture). Questa serie di automotrici subì diverse modifiche nel corso del tempo, come la totale trasformazione di tutte le unità in ale 880 o la trasformazione di una singola automotrice in ALe 630.

La terza serie altro non è che una versione modificata della seconda serie: su una delle due testate ricombare il muso a testa di vipera. La quantità prodotta di questi rotabili è esattamente il doppio di quella di seconda serie, con un chiaro intento: realizzare composizioni di 3 elettromotrici (2 unità di terza serie con una di seconda serie intercalata, al fine di ottenere composizioni bloccate a 3 pezzi). Lo scopo venne raggiunto in pochi casi, appunto perchè era difficile avere le automotrici orientate per il verso giusto in fase di realizzazione del convoglio.

Questi treni hanno effettuato servizio regolare fino al 1987. Alcune unità sono preservate per fini storici. Una ALe 882 è preservata nel museo ferroviario di Pietrarsa.

The electric multiple units of the first generation were delivered at the same time as the ETR 200, the spearhead of the fascist regime.
Compared to the latter, they directly inherit both the technical concept and the design, with appropriate specific changes for the service they were required to perform.

The first series is represented by the ALe 792 (with only second class seats) and the ALe 882 (mixed second and third class). These rolling stock were designed to travel in single composition, therefore totally independent; on both sides there were the "viper head" aerodynamic heads typical of the aforementioned first generation electric train. During their career, these railcars did not receive significant changes (except for the installation of electro-pneumatic doors around the 1960s).

The second series is represented by the first ALe 790s, immediately followed by the ALe 880s (same as the first series, one with only second class seats and the other mixed second / third). These railcars were built without aerodynamic cabins, replaced by flat head fronts with concealed intercoms. This choice was given by the fact that it was necessary to couple more units, in order to obtain trains with variable compositions (on the railcars of the first series the question was complicated because both the heads were aerodynamic and this prevented the movement of people between the coaches). This series of railcars underwent several changes over time, such as the total transformation of all units into ale 880 or the transformation of a single railcar into ALe 630.

The third series is nothing more than a modified version of the second series: on one of the two heads, the aerodynamic nose is back. The quantity produced of these rolling stock is exactly double that of the second series, with a clear intention: creating compositions of 3 cars (2 units of the third series with a second series intercalated, in order to obtain compositions locked to 3 pieces). The purpose was achieved in a few cases, cause it was difficult to have the railcars oriented in the right direction during the construction phase of the convoy.

These trains ran regularly until 1987. Some units are preserved for historical purposes. An ALe 882 is preserved in the Pietrarsa railway museum.
