1. In-game settings

To be able to drive successfully with a gamepad, DO NOT flick the steering left to right.

Push the analogue UP at all times, and slowly rotate it LEFT and RIGHT, it gives great precision. Keep the in-game steering wheel visible so you know how much rotation is being put into the steering column.
I can easily win online races doing this with the gamepad settings above.

I spent a long time configuring the settings to make it handle similar to F1 series which has excellent controller default settings, of course that game has some assistance permanently enabled for gamepad so I can't make it perfect for Assetto.

Overall this is the best settings for the technique by pushing the stick up and sliding it left and right within the rim of the joystick. I've been experimenting with all types of settings and your is the best yet.

note: i use 360 controller

is there any way to have a clutch with a gamepad? i dont see any option for it. seems silly for a simulator to not have a clutch

actual best settings for controller:
download latest content manager and custom shaders patch
download and install A7-Assist
enable GamepadFX in CSP settings and select A7-Assist in the dropdown menu

adjust default AC settings until it feels comfortable

You can now drift and race as if you had force feedback on a wheel, instead of setting steering angle, moving the stick applies force to the wheel
