Le ALn 880 fanno parte delle automotrici, a motore endotermico, di terza generazione (precedute da ALn 772 e da aln/alb 48-56-556 ecc...).
Questo tipo di rotabile era concepito per avere una potenza sufficiente a trainare se stesso ed un rimorchio; di fatti, con l'ordine di acquisto venne previsto pari numero di motrici e rimorchiate (40 unità cadauno).
La ALn 880 era il frutto di tutte le esperienze acquisite con i precedenti rotabili: il comfort di viaggio venne notevolmente incrementato, grazie ai nuovi tipi di seduta (poteva essere usata sia per servizi di prima classe e sia per quelli di seconda). Altra caratteristica era la possibilità di accoppiare più unità tra loro grazie a mantici intercomunicanti (a scomparsa), garantendo ai viaggiatori la possibilità di potersi muovere da una vettura all'altra.

Rivoluzionario era anche il singolo motore: si trattava di un 12 cilindri con disposizione orizzontale (" a sogliola"), atto ad essere installato direttamente sulla cassa e non più sul carrello. Grazie al suo ingombro ridotto, venne posizionato praticamente sotto al piano del calpestio. Il moto veniva trasmesso ad un solo carrello, attraverso un cambio wilson a 5 velocità. Sarà proprio questo tipo di trasmissione a decretarne l'insuccesso.

Le ALn 880 avevano gravi lacune in termini di affidabilità, oltre al fatto che il motore era particolarmente rumoroso.
Dopo aver effettuato vari e numerosi servizi, terminarono la loro carriera dislocate principalmente nell'Emilia Romagna.
Vennero ritirate interamente dal servizio nel 1985.

Una sola unità è stata preservata dalla demolizione ed è esposta al museo nazionale di Pietrarsa.

The ALn 880s are part of the third generation railcars, with fuel combustion engines (preceded by ALn 772 and by aln / alb 48-56-556 etc ...).

This type of rolling stock was designed to have sufficient power to tow itself and a trailer; in fact, an equal number of powered units and towed one were ordered (40 units each).
The ALn 880 was the result of all the experiences acquired with previous rolling stock: travel comfort was significantly increased, thanks to the new types of seating (it could be used both for first-class and second-class services). Another feature was the possibility of coupling several units together thanks to intercommunicating bellows (retractable), guaranteeing travelers the possibility of being able to move from one car to another.

The single engine was also revolutionary: it was a 12-cylinder with horizontal arrangement ("sole"), designed to be installed directly on the body and no longer on the bogie. Thanks to its small size, it was located under the floor. The motion was transmitted to a single carriage, through a 5-speed Wilson gearbox. This type of transmission will decree the failure of this train.
The ALn 880s had serious gaps in terms of reliability, in addition to the fact that the engine was particularly noisy.

After carrying out various and numerous services, they finished their career mainly located in Emilia Romagna.
They were withdrawn entirely from service in 1985.

Only one unit has been preserved from demolition and is exhibited at the national museum of Pietrarsa.
