Super Meat Boy - Tech Support

This guide is dedicated to those who just bought the game, got back into it or just casually progressing through the game and now you're having issues/problems to the point the game isn't working anymore. Aswell as extra features such as helping with keybindings and how to delete your save file properly.

This is only for PC/Windows Users, not Linux or Mac but you're still free to try anything that's listed in their version as it's possible it might work.

I bought Super Meat Boy but when i click “play” nothing happens.

Right click on Super Meat Boy in your library go to properties, betas then change it to the ogversion. Launch the game and your problem should be solved.












If you click "play" and get an error called “The code execution cannot proceed because d3dx9_43.dll was not found. Reinstalling the program may fix this problem”

Firstly, try reinstalling like it says as it might fix the problem, if you continue getting the error then you need to download DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer to play.

1.Go to https://www.guru3d.com/files-details/directx-end-user-runtimes-(june-2010).html
2. Follow the steps on how to install Direct-X End User Runtimes (June 2010)
3. Once installed, restart your computer and attempt to start the game up
4. If that didn't work, then simply download/update to the latest Direct-X version by downloading the latest version here: http://www.directxupdate.com/
5. Restart your computer and once again attempt to start the game up

Super Meat Boy doesn’t launch at all!

open up the Super Meat Boy properties in your Steam Library and click "set launch options"
put this in: -windowed -1024x768 -highdetail " and if it works, you should be able to change your resolution ingame or through launch options aswell as fullscreen. You can also try re-installing Visual Studio, Direct X and Steam aswell as updating them, though try updating them to the latest version before re-installing.

When i start up the game, i get a black screen!

1. Try updating your graphics card

2. Run Steam Verify Cache by right clicking Super Meat Boy, Properties, Local files then Verify Integrity of Game Files.

3.Right-click on Super Meat Boy under the Library in Steam and select Properties.Under the General tab click on “Set launch options…”.

Write: -screen-width 1920 -screen-height 1080. where 1920 and 1080 can be changed as you wish, i recommend "800 and 600" as that's the lowest the game can do and once you're ingame you can fix it up but keep it under 1920 and 1080 because the game is unable to support it higher than that which is why you've probably got a black screen. Launch the game when you’re done.





















4.Go in the SMB folder through right clicking Super Meat Boy in your Library, then click on Local Files then “Browse Local Files” look for SuperMeatBoy.exe right click, properties, and then check the compatibility.








































Try to change the “Compatibility Mode” to a newer version or a slightly older one and use the Settings below to also test if it’ll load or not then click “Apply” then “Ok” so it saves then launch the game.

Super Meat Boy keeps crashing!

Run Steam Verify Cache by right clicking Super Meat Boy, Properties, Local files then Verify Integrity of Game Files.












If that doesn't work then try the methods above such as changing resolution, windowed mode etc due to the engine being 10-11 years old by now anything small can fix it.

Controller Issues

1. Try plug your controller in, before you start the game. If you’re still having problems go to big picture mode and open controller configuration, and select the controller that you’re using.











































































2. If above doesn’t work, try right click Super Meat Boy, click Properties click Local Files tab then Steam will open the game's directory, and in there, you have to find SuperMeatBoy.exe. Click on it to launch the game. And in future you might need to keep launching the game from the file instead.

Could not create XAudio2 Device appears when i launch the game

Steps you can try, can be done in any order but try do one first, launch the game if it still doesn't work move to the next idea and so on -

1. Verify Integrity of Game Files
2. Re-install Super Meat Boy
3. Update DirectX
4. Download and install DirectX End-User Runtimes (June 2010) from Microsoft -

1. Go to: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=8109
2. Follow the steps on how to install Direct-X End User Runtimes (June 2010)
3. Once installed, restart your computer then try launch the game

If that didn't work, then simply download/update to the latest Direct-X version by downloading the latest version here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=35
Restart your computer and once again attempt to start the game up.

My game is all Pixelated all of a sudden

Try Right click on Super Meat Boy in your library go to properties, betas then select ogversion -

Issues with ogversion

This is for anyone running the ogversion of Super Meat Boy.

The game currently freezes/crashes when trying to connect to a SQL server that no longer exists, and this file should skip that altogether and give you the SQL error message, allowing you to continue into the game instantly. Running this .bat file (and saying 'Y' to the prompt) should immediately add all .exe files in the Super Meat Boy default directory to your blocked list in your firewall. If you have the game saved elsewhere, right-click the .bat file and open in Notepad. Changing the file path in line 12 should yield the same results. To undo the changes made by this file: • Control Panel > System and Security > Windows Defender Firewall > Advanced Settings. • Delete all rules for anything related to Super Meat Boy under the Inbound and Outbound rules.

I want to change the language but there is no language setting ingame!

Right click Super Meat Boy in your Steam Library, go to properties then “Language” tab and select the language you want and the next time you launch the game it’ll set it to that language.

The language you select will not carry over to the Super Meat Boy:Editor which is stuck on English as default and can’t be changed.

My Save File is bugged/glitched out/corrupted

Race Mode is a DLC for Super Meat Boy, currently the DLC causes ALOT of bugs to the base game i recommend uninstalling it if you’re not going to use it, if your save file has problems like bosses not working, places look glitchy, enemies bugging out etc it's all because of Race Mode so if you bought the DLC be sure to uninstall it ASAP as sadly it can break existing save files. If you still have problems such as the bandages past the limit, switch to “ogversion” in the Super Meat Boy properties.

Super Meat Worlds menu glitches out/SQL Error

Super Meat World requires internet connection for it to work properly, this may have to do with your internet connection, try turn off your internet, turn it back on then launch Super Meat Boy and go into Super Meat World to see if the menu is still glitching out. If the problem is still ongoing then Run Steam Verify Cache by right clicking Super Meat Boy, Properties, Local files then Verify Integrity of Game Files. Lastly, if it’s still a problem try uninstall then reinstall the game.

SQL Error is the same as above where it requires your internet to be properly connected so it can work. Disabling your firewall for Super Meat Boy can also work too, but at the moment this error just feels really random where some moments it'll show up, relaunch the game and everything works perfectly while other times it'll keep showing up no matter what you do. All i can think of is to follow the advice above and see if it works, if not then maybe try again later.

Super Meat World has been alive and well from 2018 onwards so it must be on your end where it maybe internet issues, need to verify your files etc. Alot of small fixes should be able to fix this issue and possibly it can go away on it's own.

Lastly if you're using Linux/Mac, Super Meat World will not work at all. Linux/Mac is using a very old outdated version of Super Meat Boy and never got the same update that PC got, which means Super Meat World, Race Mode etc will not work at all sadly.

Meat Boy is having FPS problems

If you're having FPS problems (Frames Per Second) such as Meat Boy himself running overly fast, bouncing on spot, objects moving faster than they should, you land on a platform only to sink under and die or just platforms are killing you, your jumps are delayed etc anything that doesn't feel right.

Try doing some of the methods above, such as changing version to “ogversion”, verifying your game, reinstalling, changing resolution, playing it in windowed mode etc.
1.Put -lowdetail or -ultralowdetail into launch options.
2.Enabling V Sync through your video card options.
3.Updating your graphics card to the latest version in your video card options.
4.Using software such as MSI Afterburner or Rivatuner to lock the game at 60 FPS can work. Be sure to have it running in the background before you launch Super Meat Boy.
5. If you have an AMD Graphics Card, F11 is the default command for "Radeon Chill" which locks the FPS to whichever you've set it to in the options but default should be 60. Pressing that while ingame should fix any framerate issue.

Change Controls/Keybindings

Go in the SMB folder through right clicking Super Meat Boy in your Library, then click on Local Files then “Browse Local Files” look for buttonmap.cfg and open it.















If it doesn’t appear as a notepad, right click buttonmap then “open with…” select “notepad” or “notepad++”



















change any of the keys that are in quotation marks, example being changing jump to q it should look like this jump=”q”;
Keep in mind it wont change any of the menu buttons ingame.

Could not create mastering voice

This message appears when you don’t have any speakers plugged in, be sure to plug in your speakers which should fix the problem.

Achievements not working even if i completed it, eg finishing all Warp Zones then Retro Rampage doesn’t unlock.

You’ll need to either replay the achievement that’s not working or start a new save file all together and just play through it again.

How do i delete my save file?

Launch Super Meat Boy, go to Help and Options, Settings, "Go to Video Settings", "Go to Game Settings", Delete Save file.

How do i use someone else's Save File?

If your save file got corrupted and you don't want to restart the game all over again and a friend has offered to use their save file, you can do so!

You'll need their "savegame.dat" and "savegame.dat.bak" files.

To find these files go to where your Super Meat Boy folder is located, for eg mine is
C:/Program Files/ Steam/ Steamapps/ Common/ Super Meat Boy/Userdata

If you're sending it over - Grab both files and upload them to a site like Dropbox or use Discord to send them over.

If you're using the file - Delete your "savegame.dat" and "savegame.dat.bak" files in the Userdata folder, then download the two your friend has sent over and place them into your Userdata folder.

You should now successfully be using their save file.

My game seems to be having weird screen tearing, how do i fix it?

Right click Super Meat Boy on your Steam Library and go to Properties then Launch Options, type
“-safe” and try run the game.

If the problem still occurs, try changing your ingame screen resolution to a lower resolution.

The Kids Xmas Achievement is not unlocking even though i’ve finished it?

When you complete a level in Super Meat World a rating system will show up at the end, all you need to do is rate the level right after you complete it and you should be able to get the achievement once you rate it, you can rate it any stars you want just so long as you rate it.

21:9 resolution error / any resolution related errors

Open up the Super Meat Boy properties in your Steam Library and click "set launch options"
put this in: -windowed -1024x768
You should be able to successfully launch the game after that and once done, you can go to the settings and change to your desired screen/resolution.

Do the exact same thing above for any resolution related errors, this is because if you have a Resolution set past 1920x1080 the game can't support it so it doesn't work properly but if you set the launch options to "-windowed -1024x768" for example, it should launch the game correctly then through you settings you'll need to change it to a proper resolution that the game can support. In some moments you may need to have it in windowed mode but most of the time you should be able to run at a proper resolution, just need testing it ingame till you find the right one you like is all.

Any issues related to Ultrawide/Screen Stretching have not been found sadly, so the only solution would be to try it in Windowed Mode with the above settings.

Xbox Live Issues

If you have an Xbox One/360 and can't play Super Meat Boy due to not being connected to Xbox Live you need to -

Try re-downloading your Gamertag on the Xbox 360 side of things. While in the Backward Compatible game, press the menu and select button simultaneously to bring up the Xbox 360 guide. While in the guide, scroll down and 'Download Profile' to re-enter your Xbox Live information.

Race Mode DLC

From 2018 till now, Race Mode causes corrupt Save Files to basically any and all save files you have before enabling the DLC.

Corrupted Save Files will
- Stop certain Achievements from showing up
- Cause your bandage limit to go past 100
- Remove A+ from certain levels
- Levels already completed despite not completing it
- Par Times being random numbers
- Characters not unlocking despite having the correct amount of bandages

It is highly recommended that you
- Delete your save file and start a fresh new one if you experience any of the above
- Disable Race Mode at all costs if you plan to use your Save File to 100% the game aswell as doing achievements/deathless.
- Back up your save files

How to back up your save files?

savegame.dat = your current save file
savegame.dat.bak = your current save file but as a back up

Place your savegame.dat.bak into another folder, any folder of your choice and play the game as normal. If you experience any of the above points, then delete "savegame.dat" through the folder or deleting the file ingame, then place your savegame.dat.bak into the User Data folder so that should be your old save file that is now restored!

Keep in mind to once again, disable the DLC because if you enable it again then it has a high chance of corrupting your save file again.

None of this seems to be working / my issue isn't listed

If none of this helps and or your issue isn't listed, i highly recommend sending an email to [e-mail]

This is Team Meats support email where they should get back to you ASAP, though be sure to be very descriptive in your email so let them know -

How the error happened (What did you do to cause the error, was it launching the game and that's it or did you do more stuff before it?)
When the error happened (Did you just recently buy the game and the error happened or has it happened before?)
Any previous errors (I had this error that got fixed but recently "this" error happened right after)
PC specs (If you're using a PC, laptop etc and if so what are your specs)

Etc, just be sure to let them know everything you feel they should know so they can easily identify the error and be able to help ASAP. But please know if you're close to the 2 hour refund deadline then it might be best to just refund it at that point but if you're really dedicated to continuing or really want to finish it that badly then it's best you don't refund and stick with the support email.

Conclusion

This started out as a document which i felt would be more useful turned into a Steam Guide, i always look out for the Steam Discussions and notice alot of people having problems with the game so instead of posting there i'm hoping this guide is able to help anyone out to make sure they get their money's worth and enjoy one of the most iconic and classic brutal 2D Platformer.
