What are Loaner Items?

Loaner Items are cosmetics/skins from the Tough Break Update, the only collections that loaner tagged items come from is

• Gun Mettle Cosmetics Collection
  
• Confidential Collection Case
  
• Quarantined Collection Case
  
• Powerhouse Collection
  
• Concealed Killer Collection
  
• Teufort Collection
  
• Craftsmann Collection

Loaner Items are able to be traded, marketed, crafted, and modified (despite the text stating otherwise) and will go more in-depth into how they were created in the next section.

How are Loaners created?

The glitched loaner tag is the result of a change to the trade-up system.

When trade-ups were first introduced in Gun Mettle, items obtained from trade-ups at this time were given origin 24 / "Trade-Up Output". When Scream Fortress 2015 was released, trade-ups were changed to origin 25 / "Trade-Up". Then when Tough Break was released, the origin 24 was re-purposed for the Loaner Program and changed from "Trade-Up Output" to "Quest Loaner Item". This item origin applies the loaner tag, and since old trade-up items have that origin they have the tag.

All items obtained from trade-ups in the two month period between their introduction on August 27, 2015 and the change on October 28, 2015 have the glitched tag. While the tag claims an item cannot be traded, marketed, crafted, or modified, this is completely untrue as the tag is only cosmetic.


Items with the loaner tag were not unboxed, nor were they brought with "Blood Money" (which was introduced in Jungle Inferno) so no Civilian grade from the Teufort/Craftsmann Collection, and no Mercenary grade from the other possible collections.

What is my Loaner Item Worth?

There's too many variables for a specific answer, but an item's worth is only as much as one's willing to pay. Loaner Tags don't have a price-point as it's too niche of a specific market to target; however, there is a few qualities that collectors and players a-like want!

The better the condition/grade the higher the premium. The most sought after loaners are either Strange / Elite Grade / and or Factory New.

As pictured below, my Sand Cannon in Factory New only 5 are indexed through backpack.tf's premium database. Loaner Tags are incredibly scarce and due to attrition items get lost over-time. Yes, to see the tag in-game. It will register on bptf as trade-up output for the origin.

so do you need to trade a loaner item to another account and then back your account to to see the loaner tag ingame? or is there some trick to do it by yourself?
