Introduction
Mary's glowing eyes

Welcome to the Ultimate Mary guide! This guide is for both monster and survivor players alike. In this guide, you will learn these important things:

  • What Mary is.
  • How Mary works.
  • How to play against Mary.
  • How to play as Mary.

After reading this guide, you will be able to understand every detail about Mary. You will also have some tips that will help you make it to the exit and to eliminate the survivors when playing as Mary.
What is Mary?

Mary's icon ingame.

Mary is a new monster in Damned that was introduced along with the Insanity system in patch 1.0. Mary is different from the other two monsters because she can always see survivors and because she has two unique mechanics. In the next secton, I will explain these two mechanics and how Mary works.

A screenshot of Mary ingame.
How does Mary work?
Mary works by being able to be in two different states:
  • Normal state.
  • Frenzy state.
When she is in her normal state, she is completely harmless. She can slowly walk around and she sobs constantly. Overtime, she will gain energy. To speed up her energy gain, she has to be close to one or more survivors. She can teleport at any time when she has the energy (8 times in a row if she has enough energy to frenzy). This can either happen on its own or the player can teleport manually.
A message will pop up in the top left corner telling you when you can teleport

Note: If the player teleports manually, some of the energy will be used. If the player is teleported automatically, none of the energy is used. If the player doesn't teleport manually, Mary will be automatically be teleported to a random location on the map. This can be anywhere from 55 seconds to 1 minute and 17 seconds.

As a survivor, there isn't a way to tell how much energy she has. As a monster however; you can tell how much energy you have and how close you are until you can frenzy. Below is a screenshot of Mary in her normal state
Mary in her normal state. Note the circle in the middle.

That circle will slowly get smaller and smaller. Once that circle is gone, Mary will have enough energy to go into the frenzy state.
What your screen will look like once you can frenzy. Note the messsage in the top left corner

To see how fast this process is, I made a small video. I sped up the video by 4x. In real time, It takes 3 minutes and 14 seconds for Mary to have enough energy to frenzy without being close to a survivor and without manually teleporting.

Note: She will begin gaining energy as soon as she spawns in; not when the host starts the game.

Another way for Mary to gain energy is by being close to the survivors.

This is how close Mary has to be to start gaining energy. When gaining energy, the monster player's screen will have a ripple effect.

Note: This is much, much faster than Mary passively gaining energy. It'll take less than 10 seconds for Mary to go from no energy to full energy when close to a survivor. This is why being close to Mary is dangerous.

Once she has enough energy, she will be able to go into a frenzy state. The default key bind for this is E. This can be changed in the options.

The option you'd want to change is transform. This is also the same key the Lurker transforms into physical form with.

When the player triggers the frenzy state, she will let out a loud scream. This lets survivors know that she has entered her frenzy state. She is now able to run extremely fast (much faster than a sprinting survivor) and be able to swipe. Here are a couple of screenshots showing what she looks like in her frenzy state from both the monsters point of view and the survivors point of view.

Survivors point of view:

Her arms are spread out when she's in the frenzy state.

Monsters point of view:
Screen is red when you're in the frenzy state.

Her frenzy state lasts only 7 seconds. After her frenzy state is over, she will go back into her normal state and immediately be teleported to a random location.

The last thing to mention is traps. Traps are set automatically by the game. Traps signify that Mary is nearby.

In the next two sections, I will explain these two points:
  • How to survive against Mary
  • How to play Mary most efficiently
How do I survive against Mary?
Now that you understand Mary and her mechanics; it's time to learn how to survive. Mary is tricky to play against because you don't know if she is ready to frenzy or not. When she does frenzy and chases you, there's a small chance you'll survive. Try to always stay away from her. Staying away from her is also tricky because she can teleport around the map. Sometimes, she will even teleport right next to you. In spite of these disadvantages; here are some tips.

Normal state.

  • Do not look at her and walk backwards. Instead, run away to a nearby door and keep it almost closed incase she enters her frenzy state. It's safe to look at Mary from a distance. Keep doors almost closed so you can see if Mary is still there. For double doors, unlock one side only. If there is no door then run far away and wait for Mary to teleport automatically.

  • Listen. Mary sobs quietly. If you hear her crying, then she is nearby.

Note: Traps also signify that she's nearby.

  • Close any doors when Mary is nearby. She can't gain energy from you through doors. Closed doors will also slow her down by a lot in her frenzy state.

  • Listen for the Mary music. If you hear it suddenly and your flashlight becomes dim, run! Your flashlight became more dim because Mary is right next to you.

Both of these screenshots were taken with fresh batteries. Gamma is maxed out and film grain is on. The one on the left is what a fresh flashlight looks like. The one on the right is what a fresh flashlight looks like with Mary right next to you.

Frenzy state.

  • If Mary is chasing after you, do not sprint in a straight line. Sprint around and in between objects instead.

An example of a spot where it's best to run in between objects.

  • Run to the nearest door and close it as soon as you hear Mary scream. It's difficult for Mary to open doors while she's in her frenzy state.

  • Do not group up together. Mary can easily frenzy and wipe the whole team in seconds if everyone is together. There's a better chance of escaping if one person dies per frenzy.
    Never group up like this.
How do I eliminate the survivors as Mary?
After learning how Mary works, the next step is learning how to play Mary. Your number one goal is to be close to the survivors. If you can't get close to the survivors then you have to put pressure on them. In this section, I will give tips on getting the most out of Mary.

Here are some tips:

  • Teleport as soon as possible after the host has started the game. The sooner you can put pressure on the survivors the better.

  • If you are behind a locked door and you know the survivors aren't unlocking any doors near you then teleport manually.

  • Be patient. The difference between you and the survivors is that you benefit from wasting time while they don't. The longer you delay the survivors, the more energy you build up. This will put stress on the survivors. An example of this is the survivors hiding behind a door from you. Force them to wait for you to automatically be teleported by camping the door.

  • Use frenzy at the right time. You want to frenzy close to them so you have enough time to kill more than one survivor. If you see them but they are far away, teleport instead.

An example of a good time to frenzy.

Note: Mary will continue gaining energy even though she's ready to frenzy. This means that you can teleport and still have the energy to frenzy. Teleporting near survivors and entering the frenzy state immediately after will give them no chance to survive.

  • Use objects to your advantage. If they see you from a distance and have to head towards your direction, hide behind an object. This will force the survivors to either wait (which is what you want) or to move towards you and see if you're still there. If you are not ready to frenzy, then you can gain some energy if they get too close. If you are ready to frenzy, wait for them to get closer before you transform.

A perfect example of using objects to your advantage.

You should really mention Mary can interact with doors just like survivors, on the play as Mary section.

Playing as Mary:
Pro tip : Close all doors.

The benefits are:
1) Slows survivors progress by making them waste more time opening doors or rechecking places they have been to already.
2) Gives you a few more sec of frenzy generation as players panic and take a longer route getting away from you, or better yet survivors fumbling with the finicky door trying to hide from you.

Playing as Mary:
Pro tip 2: Hide around the corners when players are coming your way (This is why I tell players to TURN OFF THEIR FLASHLIGHTS) and wait.

1) You gain a ton of frenzy energy when they appear right infront of you
2) You will scare them shitless :D
3) You will get more multi kills on 1 frenzy if the survivors are all packed together. Less time running around = more kills in general.

And

Playing as Survivors
Pro tip 3: As I mentioned earlier, TURN OFF YOUR FLASHLIGHTS

You cannot kill the monsters. That is the point of the game.

I believe that there is another way to force Mary to TP by pointing your flashlight right onto her. Once I was stuck in a room and my flashlight was switching so I knew mary was near. I pointed my flash toward the semi-closed door for a while and suddenly all went back to normal. I'm not sure if it's my flashlight or she got auto-tped. I only got non-manual TPed once when playing mary, and that was when I got two survivors in the same room with the light on and scanning the area. Again I don't know if it's the light or the timing.
