In 1989, Toyota Motor Corporation of Japan introduced its Lexus line of luxury cars first to the U.S. market, then to the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia a year later. The V8-powered LS 400 and the mid-size ES 250 set the tone for the new brand with excellent build quality, value, and performance. Lexus has fleshed out the line with the addition of sport coupe and sport utility vehicle models.

Lexus cars have enjoyed major success in North America, and were offered for sale in Japan for the first time in 2005. Lexus successfully entered the world of sports car and endurance racing in 2004 with its Daytona Prototype, powered by a competition version of the company's V8.
