NORTE 3000 Pacific/RENFE 231-4000

Description
RENFE 231-4000(Ex-Norte 3000) Société Alsacienne de Constructions Mécaniques(SACM), Graffenstaden(France), 1911
On early 1900s, due to the increase in the weight of passenger coaches and the increase in the number of cars by composition in the main lines operated by Norte, a new locomotive was needed that could pull the heavy expresses at high speed. For this purpose, Norte turned to Pacific locomotives, with 2-3-1 (4-6-2 on Whyte), introduced by the Paris-Orleans rail company(PO) in 1907, the PO 4500 series. This kind of locomotives had a greater stability at high speed, thanks to its front bogie, and also the rear axis allows placing a larger firebox on the loco. Finally, Norte ordered a locomotive mostly similar to the French model, but with minor improovents and a larger capacity 4-axle tender.

The first six locomotives were delivered on 1911, being the first Pacific locomotives used on Spain, in addition, this model was the first double-expansion(Compound) locomotives used by Norte. The series were placed on Valladolid and Miranda de Ebro depots, where the Norte 3000 pulled the express trains between Madrid and Basque Country. On 1914, another 10 locomotives were recieved, who were also place on Leon and Zaragoza depots, being used for trains between Barcelone and castille region.

During the 20s, these locomotives were modified, adding wind deflectors and new Worthington heaters and pumps. With the introduction of the Norte 4600 mountain type locomotives on the Madrid-Hendaye line, the 3000 series were moved to secundary lines. Hopefully, all the locomotives survived on Spanish Civil War and they were transfered to RENFE on 1941.

RENFE renamed the Norte 3000 series as RENFE 231-4000 series. For a while, these pacific locomotives returned to express services between Madrid and Bilbao, but, they were moved to cargo trains on late 40s.
They remain in used untill 1966, when all the series was scrapped. This mod brings this model backwith two Norte versions including two Norte models, original and 1920s modernized model, and two RENFE models.

Hello, sir. There may be slight errors in the LOD of distant views. When the camera zooms out, the tender is drawn in front of the vehicle.
