Le locomotive del gruppo 685 sono la versione a vapore surriscaldato e a semplice espansione della precedente serie di locomotive del gruppo 680. Vennero costruite un totale di 271 locomotive ma, a questo numero, vanno sommate le 685 ottenute dalla trasformazione dei precedenti gruppi 680 e 681.
Le 685 sono divisibili in sei serie che differiscono poco, esteticamente, tra loro. Le versioni più vecchie avevano i comandi sulla destra, le versioni più recenti li avevano a sinistra.
Alcune unità vennero costruite col sistema di distribuzione a valvole Caprotti. Queste locomotive saranno sottoposte, successivamente, ad interventi di miglioramento; in particolare, si ricorda l'installazione del preriscaldatore Franco Crosti, intervento che innalza la potenza ed il rendimento della locomotiva. Per finalità estetiche, queste locomotive hanno ricevuto una carenatura metallica su tutto il corpo macchina (dapprima completa su locomotiva e tender, successivamente ridotta per facilitare gli interventi di manutenzione).

Concepita come locomotiva per "alte velocità", la 685 ha potuto esprimere ampiamente le proprie doti da velocista solo per un periodo limitato, in un'era in cui la trazione elettrica stava soppiantando il vapore rapidamente.
Gli accantonamenti e le demolizioni sono iniziati a partire dai primi anni 60.
Alcune unità sono preservate per fini storici e sono attualmente ancora in uso.

The locomotives of the group 685 are the superheated steam and simple expansion version of the previous series of locomotives of the group 680. A total of 271 locomotives were built but the quantity was increased by the locomotives obtained with the transformation of the previous groups 680 and 681.
The 685 are divisible into six series that have small differences from each other. Older versions had the controls on the right, newer versions had them on the left.
Some units were built with the Caprotti valve distribution system. These locomotives will subsequently undergo improvements; in particular, the most important was the installation of the Franco Crosti preheater, an intervention that increases the power and efficiency of the locomotive. For aesthetic purposes, these locomotives received a metal hull on the whole machine body (initially complete on the locomotive and tender, subsequently reduced to facilitate maintenance interventions).

Conceived as a "high-speed" locomotive, the 685 was able to fully express its sprinter skills only for a limited period, in an era when electric traction was rapidly displacing steam.
Dismissions and demolitions began in the early 1960s.
Some units are preserved for historical purposes and are currently still in use.
