How to create rain in Photoshop

This is a guide on how to make a more detailed looking rain in Photoshop for your SFM posters.

Before Rain
After
Layer Setup
Create a "New Layer"
Fill layer with black (Ctrl + Backspace or Fill bucket tool)
Add Noise
With the black layer selected
Go to "Filter - Noise - Add Noise"
Noise Settings
Set Noise amount to 100, with "Gaussian" and enable "Monochromatic", then press "Ok"
Layer Settings
Under the layers change the Layers Blending Mode to "Screen"
It should look like this
Adjustment Layer
At the bottom of the layer select the "Adjustment Layer" and select "Levels"
Clip
Under the "Properties" clip the "Adjustment Layer" to the Noise Layer
Level Adjustment
Drag the black slider to the right

Like this
Till it looks something like this
Motion Blur
Make sure you have the noise layer selected and go to
Filter - Blur - Motion Blur
Motion Blur 2
Set your setting to your liking
Transform
"Ctrl + T" to transform and scale it to size to your liking.
Done
With a few more adjustments your done.

Yeah, this doesn't look that good. I'm gonna pass on this, thanks. Rain particles are WAY better.

Rain is water and there for should be refractive, and also is in a 3D environment. By using your method it looks more like stains on the camera lens then actual rain. If you create rain in a 2D app you must be able to fake the 3D effect by using multiple instances of the same layer where more and more drops are seen as you go into the distance.

The problem with this method of making rain is it appears comparatively flat and unrealistic. Real rain stretches out into the distance, and is affected by depth of field. It means you have to use multiple noise layers of different properties.

This works, but there are a lot of rain particle effects that people could use in case they don't have/aren't familiar with any editing software. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1636040162 this is one that I use myself but there are others
