I made an effort to test the fishing contest on my most recent playthrough of this game and can confidently say that the competition is bullshit and that there is no setup or strategy that makes it easier.
For context, I spent an hour and a half playing the game with the strategy that is listed on the moon wiki (eat the Kirikiri Sautee on the afternoon of Echoday, go to sleep, wake up before dawn and make your way down to the fishing grounds). I then employed the strategy used in this video (https://preservetube.com/watch?v=-CZGtUxkDqE) and won on my first attempt.
I was curious to see whether there was any merit to the strategy above and repeated it five times. I did not win on any of my attempts.
Attempt 1: 7 snags
Attempt 2: 7 snags
Attempt 3: 6 snags
Attempt 4: 5 snags
Attempt 5: 5 snags
(note that "snags" is referring to number of times that the hook dipped under the water. I did not fish out trash on any of my tests. Catching Monkfish varied between tests)
Afterwards, I began to speculate about what the sautee did. Does using the Octolips reset whatever stats I may or may not have gained from eating the sautee? Does using any form of fast travel negate the effects? I noticed that I was catching way more fish in the first half of the tourney on 3/5 of my previous attempts, which made me think that the "fishing power increase" was given to a quarter of the day as opposed to a full one. This lead me to question whether the "stat benefits" from the sautee operated on an internal clock (i.e. the time kept ticking down when I was in dialogue/navigating menus). The 5 attempts below tested all of these questions.
Attempt 6: 6 snags
Attempt 7: 5 snags
Attempt 8: 5 snags
Attempt 9: 6 snags (win)
Attempt 10: 5 snags
On attempt 9, I didn't eat an Octolips, though I did use the Pestil to fast travel to Tropical Fields. I reused this exact same strategy on attempt 10, but I did not win.
The next five tests were performed the "vanilla way" (i.e. just walking there on the day of the contest).
Attempt 1: 5 snags
Attempt 2: 5 snags
Attempt 3: 5 snags
Attempt 4: 4 snags
Attempt 5: 7 snags
The last two attempts were very similar to the first 5 that I conducted, where I caught a bunch of fish in the first half of the tourney, but fell very far behind in the second half.
I think the nature of the Kirikiri bug Sautee is proof of it's lack of utility. It's incredibly far away from the site of the fishing competition and none of the other food items you can buy at Wildcat House have the implication of increasing your abilities. If an in-game "item" doesn't make the tourney easier, there's no way in hell that changing the language will, either.
TL;DR, just walk to the fishing tourney. The 3-4 minutes of setup involved in eating the Sautee is agonising when compared to the ~45 seconds that it takes to just walk there.
1. Eat Kirikiribug sautee during Echoday afternoon
2. Go to sleep right before nighttime so I can wake up shortly before morning on Solarday
3. Teleport to Tropical Fields and walk to the fishing contest
4. If I lose the fishing contest, hit L to change the language and restart the game from my save
This is the kind of insanity the fishing contest brings you to.
