The Tragedy of Darth Plagueis The Wise
Por Anakin Skywalker
Did you ever hear the tragedy of Darth Plagueis The Wise?
I thought not. It’s not a story the Jedi would tell you. It’s a Sith legend. Darth Plagueis was a Dark Lord of the Sith, so powerful and so wise he could use the Force to influence the midichlorians to create life… He had such a knowledge of the dark side that he could even keep the ones he cared about from dying. The dark side of the Force is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be unnatural. He became so powerful… the only thing he was afraid of was losing his power, which eventually, of course, he did. Unfortunately, he taught his apprentice everything he knew, then his apprentice killed him in his sleep. Ironic. He could save others from death, but not himself.

Darth Plagueis The Wise

For centuries, our Order has seen the dark side of the Force as a means of achieving immortality. Yet none were able to unlock that secret…until Darth Plagueis the Wise. My master discovered ways to use the Force to keep others from perishing. But, alas, for all his infinite wisdom, he still could not save himself from death at the hand of his trusted apprentice. ―Darth Sidious

Obsessed with achieving immortality, Plagueis strived to discover the path towards becoming an eternal being alongside his apprentice Darth Sidious and rule together for thousands of years, and believed the secret to it laid in science. While Plagueis became afraid of losing his power, he never expected his apprentice to be the reason he would lose power. Ultimately, Plagueis had trusted
and underestimated Sidious, who betrayed and murdered him when he least expected it. Though Plagueis did not live to achieve his goals, Sidious succeeded to survive his death, but given that his transfer was imperfect, he asked himself if maybe Plagueis got the last laugh after all at his failure.

"It's ironic. He could save others from death, but not himself."
"Is it possible to learn this power?"
"Not from a Jedi."
―Sheev Palpatine and Anakin Skywalker

In the waning days of the Republic, Sidious recounted the history of his late master to Skywalker, whom he befriended years before the Clone Wars in an effort to gradually turn him to the dark side of the Force. Skywalker, who was unaware at the time that his friend was in fact a Sith Lord, and having developed premonitions of his secret wife's death in childbirth, was intrigued by the story of Plagueis, particularly his ability to prevent death. When the fear of loss drove Skywalker to betray the Jedi Order, turning him into the Sith Lord Darth Vader, Sidious reformed the Republic into the Galactic Empire and declared himself Emperor. At the same time, he had the Jedi systematically executed throughout the galaxy by Order 66, completing the Sith plan that lasted for over a millennium.
Sidious Reborn

Sidious used Plagueis' methods to transfer his consciousness to a new body after his first demise.
During the Battle of Endor in 4 ABY, Sidious was killed by a redeemed Anakin Skywalker, who turned back to the light side of the Force and threw Sidious down a reactor shaft to save his son Luke Skywalker. While falling, however, Sidious reflected that he had prepared himself for that scenario unlike Plagueis and called on all the power of the dark side to leave his body and thrust his consciousness to a cloned body created by the Sith Eternal on the secret Sith world of Exegol

However, Sidious' use of transference had confined his essence in a flawed vessel that was incapable of containing his dark side energy, causing severe physical deformities to his new body. Because of the imperfect transfer, Sidious later surmised that Plagueis may have kept his secrets in his grave and was "having the last laugh after all.

Sidious Facts
In the canon Aftermath novel trilogy, it was also revealed that the Emperor had a plan to cull weakness from the Empire after his own death. He would draw the Empire and its foes into battle at the planet Jakku and then destroy the planet, taking out the “weakest” fighters and leaving the stronger to rule a new Empire.

In The Rise of Skywalker, we finally get to see Emperor Palpatine sit on the throne that was originally designed for him in a sketch by Ralph McQuarrie in 1981. Phil Szostak, creative art manager at Lucasfilm and author of The Art of movie books

in the Legends timeline. Obsessed with eternal life, in the Expanded Universe Palpatine had prepared several cloning chambers prior to his demise aboard the second Death Star. When his physical body perished after Vader's betrayal, Palpatine's spirit simply entered one of his clone's bodies, not only reviving him but placing him inside a younger and more-agile host. This was accomplished using the dark technique "transfer essence", which Palpatine describes as "The dying is painful. The transition is not an enjoyable experience. But it is all a small price to pay…for eternal life."

Palpatine's revival was chronicled in the Dark Empire comic, a story that controversially depicts Luke falling to the dark side (sort of, it was partially a ruse) under the rejuvenated Emperor. Ultimately, Leia redeems her brother, who duels Palpatine in the ultimate lightsaber fight we never got to witness in the films, finally besting his opponent and conquering the Emperor for good (his other clone slates having already been destroyed by Luke).

Given that Palpatine killed his own master, Darth Plagueis, perhaps it should come as no surprise that the Emperor had little in the way of trust for even his closest associates, including Darth Vader. Therefore, the Emperor began searching out Force-sensitive infants all over the galaxy, creating a new Dark Side order known as the Inquisitors.

The Inquisitors would rise in profile some ten years following the fall of the Jedi. As the Rebel Alliance formed and began staging attacks on the Empire, Palpatine tasked Darth Vader and the Inquisitors with eliminating the Rebellion. They soon discovered that a number of Jedi had escaped death during the time of Order 66. Palpatine also recognized Darth Vader’s mental instability, and planned to use the Inquisitors as a defense force, should Vader turn on his master. He also used the Inquisitors as pressure for Vader to maintain loyalty, especially after Anakin Skywalker’s former apprentice Ashoka emerged as a Rebel agent.

In The Making of Revenge of the Sith by J.W. Rinzler, it’s revealed that Lucas’ earlier drafts of the story featured a scene where Palpatine would reveal to Anakin that he had manipulated the midi-chlorians to create the young Jedi, and in this way, the Sith lord was his father. While Lucas cut this storyline from the movie, hints of it returned in the second volume of Marvel’s excellent Darth Vader comic, which features Vader having a trippy Force vision that shows him how the Emperor might have created him. But this revelation is left open to interpretation.

The first drafts of Star Wars featured a very different version of Emperor Palpatine. Lucas had originally created a character named Cos Dashit, a bumbling Emperor who didn’t have Force powers nor any real strategical skills. A version of the Cos character later appeared in the original Star Wars novelization, From the Adventures of Luke Skywalker, which begins with a prologue describing the Emperor as more of a puppet leader controlled by other Imperial leaders like Grand Moff Tarkin. This was retconned in later Star Wars adventures.

Palpatine also set up personal failsafes in case of his untimely demise. The death of his physical body was even part of his dark plan. The Rise of Skywalker shows how Palpatine planned to live on by possessing another person. At first he planned for it to be Luke Skywalker, then Palpatine’s own son, then Rey. Since he could access all the spirits of Sith Lords past and she could speak to the Force Ghosts of Jedi Masters, corrupting her would put an end to the Jedi forever. To ensure he lived long enough to do that, Palpatine had to move his spirit into a clone body first. After Return of the Jedi, he lived in the care of the Sith acolytes on Exegol. The body he wears in The Rise of Skywalker is a clone form and an imperfect one at that. It began to decay and was unable to move on its own. In essence, while Palpatine’s body didn’t survive being thrown into the Death Star’s reactor, his spirit could as long as there was a vessel for it.

Thank you Anakin, very cool

Unironically a good chronicle though. If I'm honest, I suspect he'll show up again in Disney canon at some point in the future.

its sad that the sequels had to suck so hard the legends idea of plagueis' teachings offering a younger more evil palpatine wouldve been better make the runaway trooper a jedi with low enough midochlorians that he isnt immediately detected or possibly anakin himself as a force ghost hiding him from his corrupted grandson turned acolyte to this mysterious new form of an old enemy. remove all the "dyed hair human" aliens, rose, and rey entirely or rather have rey and kylo switch eventually and rey slowly realizes her time with Finn was all a part of a greater calling the final reconstruction of the dark side, kylo is slowly redeemed over time only to meet a similar yet sadly inconclusive end as he sacrifices himself to eliminate palpatines new body leaving FInn to eliminate the little sand slave he was rescued by and learned from Luke with in a Dragon Ball style training (krillin and goku):jawawink:
