Guide introduction
Welcome to what is now my second guide in the Farming Simulator franchise. Yay.
This will be going in-depth into the newest mechanic of FS: production chains.
All of the data for the production chains is organized in a spreadsheet, and color coded for your convenience. You can access the spreadsheet here.[docs.google.com]
Not everything in this guide will be accurate, as there are some aspects of production chains that I do not know how they work. These are pointed out wherever my knowledge lacks.
All comments, criticisms and suggestions are welcome, as this is the best way that this guide will improve.
So, what is a production chain?
If you ever played Farming Simulator 19 and got into the mods, there were many factory-like mods that you could use, such as seed production, automatic TMR station, and so on, all using the base mod Global Company.
This is basically that, but made more user-friendly and properly incorporated into the game.
Production chains allow you to process your simple grains, wool, milk, etc. into more profitable goods that you can sell at any point in the chain.

(Note: the image above refers to "planks" as boards, and "planks long" as planks. This guide will use "planks" and "planks long" as these are the terms used in game.)
Production chains exist as factories, which are either placed in by the map author or placed by the player themselves through the construction menu, though not all factories can be placed by the player.
Additionally, all production chains use "recipes," which are what the production chain will make with the specified inputs. These will be discussed in length in the next sections.
The "chain" part of production chains refers to how the output of one factory can be used in the output of another, like how flower from the grain mill can be used to make bread in the bakery.

Why should I use the production chain?
Production chains add value to a product the same way real-life products gain value: raw material plus labor and change to product equals more expensive product. With production chains, this is simplified to:
Raw Product + Time + a little bit of money = More Expensive Good

Pros and Cons:
For a user to determine if a production chain is right for their operation, they must consider many of the pros and cons of production chains before purchasing and operating factory, as listed below:
Pros:
  • Transforms normal products into more expensive products, adding more money to your harvest or operation.
  • Wide variety of goods that can be made from a wide variety of products.
Cons:
  • Somewhat high startup cost (often greater than $50,000).
  • Some goods take more time to produce than others, often resulting in a long wait until you can sell finished goods from when you first input them.
  • Need to wait until a certain amount of goods are made until you can sell them.
If the user thinks that the pros outweigh the cons, then owning a production chain should be in their best interest.
How do I use the production chains?
First, you need to own the factory you want to use. To do so, either purchase it yourself through the build menu (Tip: use Left Shift + P to get to the build menu), or through purchasing the existing factory on the map.
To purchase a map-placed one, simply walk up to the wrench icon an interact with it (Default: R). You will be prompted on whether or not you want to buy it.
Once bought, your factory can be used. First, go to the factory's menu by interacting with the wrench icon, or through the game menu. From there, you will need to activate a recipe.
Below is an example of a factory menu for the dairy:
From here, we can see:
  • Its status
  • Cycles per hour
  • Cost per hour
  • Current Recipe
  • Input (incoming) materials
  • Output (outgoing) products
Now, let's break down what this all means.
  • The status reports what your factory is doing. Inactive means that the selected recipe was not activated, and needs to be manually activated by the player (Default: Enter) before the factory can work. Active, along with other status messages, should be self explanatory.
  • Cycles per hour is how many times the recipe will use ingredients in an hour. This is simply how much of the ingredients will be consumed every hour, hence larger numbers will result in more ingredients being consumed to produce more product. This and Cost per hour scale with how many days there are in a month. To figure out how many cycles there are in a month, multiply this number by 24÷x, where x is how many days there are in a month.
  • Cost per hour is pretty self explanatory. You are billed every midnight. Note that this is per active hour, hence you won't get charged this if the factory isn't running.
  • Recipes are the set of input items needed to produce a certain amount of a (chosen) output item, done in a ratio. In the game code, recipes specify what it is making, what inputs, how much of those inputs, what outputs, how much of that output, the cycles per hour, and cost per hour, along with other data. If there are multiple recipes, many can be activated at one time, and if the recipes share an input, the inputs will be distributed among the outputs.
  • Incoming and outgoing materials is pretty self explanatory. Input materials are gained by dumping the product into the area designated with a dumping trailer. Note that there are also options on what to do with the outgoing products, which there are three options:
    • Storing: this will store the goods until a set amount is reached, then it will spawn a pallet containing the outgoing products. The area the pallets spawn are usually marked with zone markers.
    • Distributing: this will send your products to other production chains. The products will only be sent if there is enough to spawn a pallet.
    • Selling: pretty self explanatory, the product is sold directly from the factory.
The profit you get from this is less than if you were to let the pallet get created and transport it to a sell point. The price is also affected by the seasonal fluctuation of that item.
What information is available in this guide?
Most of this information was obtained straight from the game code (via reading the XML files used by the placeables system). Otherwise, it can be found by playing the game as well. This data was stored into a spreadsheet for easy reading, the link for which is found above. Each factory will have its own section, and will show:
  • Purchase price
  • Placeable (that is, if it can be placed by the player from the building menu)
  • Map coordinates (for map-placed buildings)
  • Its recipe:
    • Input amount and type
    • Output amount and type
    • Output ratio ([sum of] output divided by [sum of] input; use this for calculating the output amount by multiplying a given input by this number)
    • Cost per active hour
    • Cycles per hour
    • Monetary gain as a percentage (how much more you will make selling off the finished product as compared to selling off the ingredient)
  • How much product the factory can hold
  • Base price (as defined in game files) or average price, used to calculate monetary gain
    • The base price will be multiplied based on the economic difficulty setting, 1 for hard, 1.8 for medium, and 3 for easy.
  • And any other notes.

Greenhouses
Greenhouses recipes for all variants are the same. Greenhouses are also the cheapest production chain building, as well as the easiest to add inputs to (considering all you need is a source of water and a mobile water tank), so I recommend this if you want to gain some experience with production chains.

Conclusion, Credits and Change log
Production Chains allow you multiple avenues of increasing the value of your yield. Productions Chains work via inputs and outputs, and selecting what building you use depends on what you produce.
Any and all feedback is greatly appreciated!
Thanks to Grimloc for info on how the selling settings works, and grolbu on how cycles per hour works.
Thanks for viewing this guide.

Thanks for this amazing info!

Just installed FF22 and it has cycles / month and production costs / month , not per hour. For instance, my spinnery recipe for fabric cotton has 576 cycles/month and costs $120/month.

Also, at the Oil Mill, I believe olive oil is an output product, not an input product.

@phelix fill up the production and then turn around and sell the rest of the crop. making 1.3x on smaller items and 2.5x on some of the bigger ones can be a HUGE benefit. even just the greenhouse makes me about the same as a field harvest if I store it to sell at the same time. if I took the strawberries to the bakery and made cakes it would be an even bigger sale.. also the greenhouses seem to let you run all three recipes at the same time.

Nice guide, lots of info that should have been in a manual (LOL)

(1) unless I've missed something, production is slow. My spinnery is full of cotton, storing fabric. Every hour it runs 2 cycles of 36 = 72 fabric per hour. In theory I get 1 pallet to take away and sell every 14 hours but it seems to scale with game speed, at 5x I actually get one pallet every 2-3 days.

(2) the input limit for a production building you own also applies to buildings you don't own. After one particularly enthusiastic harvest I had 4 bales of cotton to sell to the spinnery which I didn't own at the time. Nope, the spinnery only hold 3 bales worth of cotton. The 4th bale has been sitting on the sell point for around a year now slowly getting used up. I won't be harvesting cotton this year ...

It might make economic sense to add value and ultimately get paid more for things, but it's so slow that in practise you're better just taking the smaller money up front.

I dont know man, I dont really get why I should use those Production Chains. Most of the time I would make more money by selling the grains instead of selling the flour for example

The selling setting on a factory sells at what price the product is going for that month. You don't receive an income notification in green for the money when its added to your account like most other immediate income sources, and the factory sells it as soon as a pallet quantity(etc) is available(every hour). The Income is however noted in the finances screen. Tested with the Oil Mill. It seems for maximum profit you have to store, load, and transport the goods yourself while waiting for best price/month. Good read, and nice guide. Thanks!!!
