Description
Pan-Pacific Auditorium by RoomMic

Host conventions in Moderne glory

The Pan Pacific Auditorium was a convention center built in 1935 in Los Angeles, California. It operated as the city's main convention center for the next 40 years, until it was replaced by the LA Convention Center in 1972. Despite efforts to save the building, it burned down in 1989 after years of abandonment.

The design of the facade was renowned for its four towers, designed in the Art Deco-derivative Streamline Moderne style, which emphasized sweeping lines. It was said they resembled upswept aircraft fins. They became one of the most famous examples of the style, shown in many Hollywood movies. The designers were Wurdeman & Becket.

Thank you to all the LA theater archive sites, too numerous to list here, as well as the Library of Congress (thanks eva!). The photos were invaluable.

The entry arches are replicated at the turnstiles of Disney's California Adventure in Anaheim, if anyone wants to see it in person.

Isn't the place where the movie back in the early 80's called Xanadu was filmed? If u haven't seen the movie, it's beautiful.

This is really cool!. Thank you!.

Any chance we will get it's replacment, the new LA convention center?. Just curious. That is something the workshop just dose not have, a decent modern convention center asset.

Even if you just made the west hall, being easier as that is just a box, no curved facade. that would be awesome. Maybe even remove the plaza/ loading floor so it was just the building itself.

Just a thought. But like I said, This is awesome. Thanks a ton for your contribution to the community!

Oh, I also didn't know it was green. I think most of the pics I had seen of it were in black and white, so that tells you that it has some history, right?
