New World Armor Complete Guide
Von BoOsTeR
Amor in Amazon’s New World MMORPG plays a huge role in how your overall character functions in the game. It doesn’t just provide mitigations, but also determines how agile or slow your character becomes during combat. New World has 3 different armor categories, light, medium, and heavy, and you can mix and match pieces of gear in order to obtain your desired build. Armor in New World can also provide your character with special bonuses and additional attribute points through the use of perks and gem slots.

Overview
Tiers & Level Requirements

The gear system in New World is based on different tiers and gear scores. However, all gear including armor, has a specific level requirement as well. The level requirement for a specific piece of gear is based on it’s gear score.

  • Tier 2 - Level 1-19
  • Tier 3 - Level 20-39
  • Tier 4 - Level 40-59
  • Tier 5 - Level 60

Also worth noting is that higher rarity gear has a lower level requirement than lower rarity gear with the same gear score, which makes rarity of gear even more valuable.

Armor Rarities

There’s different gear rarities in New World, and armor is no exception. The progression of rarity in gear is as follows:

  • Common (Gray)
  • Uncommon (Green)
  • Rare (Blue)
  • Epic (Purple)
  • Gold (Legendary)

Each perk your armor has counts as a rarity point. A gem slot and attributes also count as a rarity point, which results in a potential total of 5 rarity points. If an item has the maximum of 5 rarity points then it will be a Legendary item. Also, the rarer the item the higher the gear score will be within the gear’s tier range. The number of perks (rarity points) associated with each tier of rarity is as follows:

  • Common: 0
  • Uncommon: 2
  • Rare: 3
  • Epic: 4
  • Legendary: 5

It’s worth noting that there can be either 1 or 2 attribute bonuses associated with a piece of gear, and both 1 and 2 attribute points are considered 1 rarity point.

Gear Score

Gear score in New World is important to the overall strength of your build. Higher gear score means better armor mitigations. Gear score follows a range per tier of gear:

  • Tier II: Gear Score 100-299
  • Tier III: Gear Score 250-399
  • Tier IV: Gear Score 350-499
  • Tier V: Gear Score 450-600

Both your Physical and Elemental resistances scale with the gear score. The higher the gear score the higher your mitigations.

Physical vs Elemental Armor

Amor in New World is composed of 2 different types of resistances, Physical and Elemental. Physical resistance helps mitigate all physical damage types, such as melee, ranged musket, ranged bow, axe throws, etc.

Elemental resistance helps mitigate all magic damage types, such as fire, void, lightning etc.

Physical and elemental armor rating both scale consistently across armor classes. So, heavy armor has the highest armor ratings for both physical and elemental while light armor has the highest for both. There are however other advantages to light and medium armor that are noted below under the “Armor Weight” heading.

The amount of physical and elemental resistances you receive from each piece of armor is determined by a “prefix” system. See the Prefix and Suffix Section below.

Armor Weight

Armor weight is one of the most important mechanics in New World. The weight of your armor determines how mobile you will be. Every piece of armor in New World has an assigned weight, and for each piece of armor that’s equipped that weight accumulates. There are 3 different categories of weight as follows:

Light:

While wearing light armor, your dodge is a quick roll that covers a lot of distance. Light armor tends to be less protective, however you gain a 20% damage bonus while in the light armor weight category. The damage increase also affects your healing output.

Normal:

While wearing normal weight armor, your dodge is a quick hop. This offers a good balance between protection and mobility. You deal 10% damage and crowd control debuffs you apply last 10% longer. The damage increase also affects your healing output.

Heavy:

While wearing heavy armor, your dodge is a slow sidestep. Heavy armor limits your mobility but offers the best damage mitigation. Your block stability is increased by 15% and crowd control debuffs you apply last 20% longer.

Keep in mind that you can mix and match your armor to obtain pretty balanced mitigations by piecing together a mixture of light, medium, and heavy while staying in the light weight category and still being able to dodge roll.

Prefix and Suffix System

All armor in New World has a specific name, and the name will have a prefix and a possible suffix within it. The prefix and suffix will tell you a lot about the armor, including the type of mitigations you are going to get from that armor, and the type of attribute point bonuses you’re going to receive. You can see the full list of all prefix and suffix bonuses by checking out our prefix and suffix guide.

For example, let’s look at the Steel Heavy Boots of the Barbarian.

The Heavy Affix on a heavy piece of armor tells us that the primary resistance on the boots will be physical and the secondary will be elemental. Meaning this piece of armor has more physical resistance than other boots and less elemental resitance.

The suffix of Barbarian tells us that this piece of armor is going to give you a primary attribute bonus of strength and a secondary attribute bonus of constitution. If an item has a suffix, and all items do not, then you are guaranteed to receive the primary attribute bonus and in most cases will receive the secondary attribute bonus as well.

How to Obtain Armor

Armor in New World can be obtained from drops, crafting, the trading post, faction vendor, outpost rush armor crates, and by completing special armor quests.

Armor can drop from mobs that you encounter and defeat while exploring Aeternum. Armor that drops from these encounters will have a set gear score, tier, and possibly perks. Dropped armor can also have empty gem slots that you can utilize with a gem to gain additional attribute points, and some armor is dropped with a gem already slotted.

Typically the higher tier mobs that you defeat, the higher tier and higher gear score items will be dropped. However, as you level up lower tier armor (and other gear) still play an important role in New World. Obtaining lower tier armor is valuable because you can salvage it and which will give you repair parts, and then you can use those repair parts to repair your damaged gear.

Armor can also be obtained through crafting, the trading post, and the Faction Vendors.

There are also special armor quests you can complete in order to obtain specific armor sets. These quests are a chain consisting of 5 child quests that will guide you to forge each piece in the set. Each successive quest requires a new level threshold of 40, 45, 50, 55, and 60.

You can craft a piece of the set upon completing the child quest and obtaining the required ingredients.

Each item in the set contributes to a set bonus, which will confer increased stats depending on the number of armor pieces from a given set that you have equipped.

Dropped vs Crafted vs Faction Armor

The primary difference between dropped armor and crafted armor in New World is that armor that is looted will come with a specific set of perks that can’t be changed, and when crafting gear you can choose which perks to apply to that specific piece of gear.

Bind on Pickup Items

All equippable items are either Bind-on-Equip or Bind-on-Pickup. This is a feature put into the game in order to protect the item economy and keep demand for quality items high. By ensuring that an item (once equipped) is removed from the economy by being bound to a player and unable to be resold, a space is then created in the economy for similar items to be sold to other players on the trading post or scrapped for repair parts.
Armoring Information
Armoring is the Crafting skill focused on creating Armor by using resources and materials obtained from skills in the Gathering and Refining lines. A higher level in Armoring will allow players to create better, more powerful Armors, as well as improving the Gear Score range of craftable weapons.

Armoring can be performed at a Forge or Outfitting Station, depending on the type of armor and these stations can often be found in Settlements. Crafting stations have a Tier level which can be increased by taking on Town Projects. Note that each Armor piece has a tier level requirement in order to craft. This tier level corresponds to the crafting station's tier level. If your settlement's Forge or Outfitting Station level does not meet the requirement, you will need to either raise it or find another settlement with a station of a higher tier. Crafting Armor requires the player to be of the appropriate Armoring level as well. Leveling up in Armoring is a straightforward process. Players simply need to continuously craft armor raise their level in the skill. Collecting resources, however, is more involved and can prove more difficult.

The Outfitting Station is used for crafting the light and medium armor and the Storage bags. On the other hand, Forge is used for crafting the heavy armor type in the New World.

You can see the learned recipes in the left panel of the crafting interface. When you are going to craft a piece of armor there are chances that you may found a perk or more.

You may found an empty gem pocket or nothing as the outcomes are random but still you can use the Azoth which is a special resource that can increase the chances of finding a perk or socket while crafting.

Armoring Armor Perks

While Crafting a piece of Armor, it has a small chance of gaining one or more Perks or an Empty Gem Socket. While these outcomes are random, players can use the special resource Azoth during the crafting process to improve the chances of getting perks, a socket or both. Additionally, there are a number of special materials that can be gathered in the world that, when used during the crafting process, can dictate what Perk is added to the armor. However, there are still no guarantees that a Perk or Gem Socket will indeed be added to the piece of equipment but the chance increases as the Crafting skill level increases.

Gear Score & Item Yield

Leveling up in Armoring improves your crafted equipment's Minimum and Maximum Gear Score by tiers. Improving the Maximum Gear Score allows for the potential for better items while improving the Minimum Gear Score shortens the Gear Score range, making it easier to craft items at the higher end. Item Yield is not affected by leveling in Armoring.

New World Armoring Leveling
Armoring allows you to craft different pieces of armor, whether they are light, medium or heavy. Another major advantage of Armoring is the ability to craft and sell Storage Bags or use them yourself to increase inventory capacity.

The Armoring skill depends on the other skills for the materials and resources. You can get the material required for crafting from other players as well by trading. To gather the materials and resources yourself, the following companion skills are highly recommended

  • Leatherworking
  • Skinning
  • Smelting
  • Mining
  • Weaving
  • Harvesting

We will cover some of the best ways to level up your Armoring trade skill along with rewards and recipes you can get after reaching the maximum level (200).
How to Level Up Armoring Skill
  • Craft Armor in the Forge and Outfitting Station
  • Level Up Your Gathering Skills
  • Buy Resources From the Trading Post
  • Bulk Craft Low-Tier Gloves

Craft Armor in the Forge and Outfitting Station

You can gain level for your Armoring Skill by crafting armor recipes, specifically in the Forge and Outfitting Station. These armor recipes include headwear, chestwear, gloves, legwear, footwear, and bags.

Level Up Your Gathering Skills

Leveling up your gathering skills is important to keep all your resources intact for crafting armor. For crafting armor, Harvesting and Mining is particularly needed.

Buy Resources From the Trading Post

You can also buy resources from the trading post if you don't want to manually gather resources. The only drawback here is that it could cost a lot of coin. However, you can also sell the armor you bulk crafted to gain back some coin.

Bulk Craft Low-Tier Gloves

Crafting lower-tier armor is the most efficient way of leveling Armoring Skill. Among the different armor types, it's best to bulk craft gloves, as they give a decent amount of XP at minimal resource cost.

New World Armoring Leveling Tips
Leveling up in Armoring allows for crafting of better, more powerful Armor with higher Gear Scores and also improves chances of imbuing them with Perks or a Gem Socket. Leveling up in Armoring unlocks more recipes as well as more powerful versions of existing recipes.

As a general rule, sticking to lower tier items is the recommended method for quickly leveling up a Crafting Skill. This is due to the cost of crafting items increasing exponentially as you move up in tiers, with some higher level recipes costing up to double the amount of resources to craft. Another reason to craft lower tier items for leveling is the ease of gathering resources and the relative low market cost should you choose to purchase them instead.

In the case of Armoring, the most efficient items to craft in terms of Materials to XP ratio are the Weak Oakflesh Balm (Tier II) consumables. Unfortunately, these items are locked behind Level 20 Armoring. To reach this threshold, you will be crafting Tier II Gloves which offer the next best Material to XP Ratio. For Armoring, you have a choice between Light, Medium and Heavy armor. Each type of Armor uses a primary material, between Cloth, Leather and Metals and the other two as secondaries. For example Light Armor uses Cloth as primary materials, with Leather and Metals as secondaries.

It's important to note that each crafted item can be salvaged to get some of the primary materials back. This is useful for cutting on material gathering by crafting Tier II items from the Light, Medium and Heavy categories and salvaging them for a small return on each material type which can then be used as secondary materials for Tier III and above if you choose to go that path.

The following table details the amount of experience required to reach certain levels in Armoring, as well as a general count for the amount of Crafted Items required to reach these thresholds. For simplicity's sake, the table only shows tier milestone levels instead of every single Armoring level.

Leveling up Armoring in New World will require the use of an Outfitting Station of sufficient Tier (i.e., Tier IV Outfitting Station to craft Tier IV items) for Light and Medium gear and a Forge for Heavy gear. You will also want to have Harvesting at 30 in order to harvest magical plants for motes which should be easy to achieve as you gather materials for Light armor.

Level 0 - 50

Phase 1: Begin by getting your Armoring to Level 20. At this tier, you will want to gather as much Fibers, Rawhide and Iron Ore as you can. Do not worry about overgathering because these materials will be used as secondaries for Tier III and above, or should you choose to stick to this Tier of crafted items, you will need to stockpile a massive amount of them. All three materials are found in abundance in all of the starting areas but for efficiency, do all your gathering in either Monarch's Bluffs or Windsward where you will come across a lot of Earthspine and Rivercress plants from which you can gather Earth Motes and Water Motes respectively. Fibers are derived from the Hemp plant which are abundant around grassy areas. Rawhide can be harvested from practically any wildlife creatures around the starting zones and Iron Ore can be mined from Iron Veins found around highland areas.

You can choose between Light, Medium or Heavy Armor as they all use the same materials, albeit in varying amounts. It is recommended you craft an even split between the three, as each Armor type can be salvaged and you can retrieve a small portion of their primary materials. Salvaging Light Armor will refund a portion of Linen, Medium will refund a portion of Coarse Leather and Heavy will refund a portion of Iron Ingots. The materials required are as follows:

Linen Gloves (28 Total) To Level 20

  • 112 x Linen: Comprised of 448 x Fibers
  • 112 x Coarse Leather: Comprisd of 448 x Rawhide
  • 28 x Iron Ingot: Comprised of 112 x Iron Ore

Coarse Leather Gloves (28 Total) To Level 20

  • 112 x Coarse Leather: Comprised of 448 x Rawhide
  • 112 x Linen: Comprised of 448 x Fibers
  • 28 x Iron Ingot: Comprised of 112 x Iron Ore

Iron Plate Gauntlets (28 Total) to Level 20

  • 112 x Iron Ingot: Comprised of 448 x Iron Ore
  • 112 x Coarse Leather: Comprised of 448 x Rawhide
  • 28 x Linen: Comprised of 112 x Fibers

Phase 2: Once you reach Armoring Level 20, you can begin crafting Weak Oakflesh Balm all the way to 50. As stated above, you can find the required Motes around Monarch's Bluffs and Windsward. Makes sure your Harvesting is at Level 30. Otherwise, take a few minutes to get it to the appropriate level. Alternatively, if you have Mining at 50, you can also gather these Motes from Earthcrag and Springstone nodes. Oil is derived from Seeping Stones which can be found frrequently in Monarch's Bluffs as well. These nodes require a Mining level of 20. The Northwest portion of First Light is also a good farming zone for Oil.

Weak Oakflesh Balm (228 Total) To Level 50

  • 228 x Earth Mote
  • 228 x Water Mote
  • 228 x Oil

Level 50 - 200

For the remaining leveling brackets, you can stick to Tier II Gloves at 108 XP per craft or the Weak Oakflesh Balm at 36 XP per craft. It simply comes down to which you'd rather gather materials for. Of course, a mix of both routes is also viable, especially if farming in Monarch's Bluffs or Windsward where all required materials can be found in abundance.

Glove Route (~17,318 gloves total from Level 50 to 200)

While crafting Tier III Gloves and above technically yields more XP per craft, obtaining the primary materials require Refining Materials such as Crossweave, Tannin and Sand Flux which can only be acquired from Supply Boxes so they may be difficult to farm. It will also take a ton more work just gathering and refining the materials required. Remember to salvage your crafted items every now and then to cut down on gathering time.

Linen Gloves

  • 69,272 x Linen: Comprised of 277,088 x Fibers
  • 69,272 x Coarse Leather: Comprised of 277,088 x Rawhide
  • 17,318 x Iron Ingot: Comprised of 69,272 x Iron Ore

Coarse Leather Gloves

  • 69,272 x Coarse Leather: Comprised of 277,088 x Rawhide
  • 69,272 x Linen: Comprised of 277,088 x Fibers
  • 17,318 x Iron Ingot: Comprised of 69,272 x Iron Ore

Iron Plate Gauntlets

  • 69,272 x Iron Ingot: Comprised of 277,088 x Iron Ore
  • 69,272 x Coarse Leather: Comprised of 277,088 x Rawhide
  • 17,318 x Linen: Comprised of 69,272 x Fibers

At 108 XP per craft, this equates to ~1,870,344 XP which should get you to Level 200.

Oakflesh Balm Route (~51,953 Total balms from Level 50 to 200)

In the case of Oakflesh Balms, higher tier balms will technically provide more XP per craft, but fusing the higher tier wisps and essences required is an overall loss in Material to XP ratio, especially since there is no other way to acquire them.

For reference, a Weak Oakflesh Balm uses 1 x Earth Mote, 1 x Water Mote and 1 x Oil yielding 36 XP. A Common Oakflesh Balm uses 1 x Earth Wisp (5 Motes), 1 x Water Wisp (5 Motes) and 1 x Oil at only 90 XP per craft whereas those 5 Earth and Water Motes could be used to create 5 Weak Oakflesh Balms for 180 XP. This is the same for all higher tiers of Oakflesh Balm so you are better off sticking to Tier II Balms. Furthermore, mote fusions are locked behind levels 25, 75 and 125 Arcana setting up another prerequisite that doesn't exist for Tier II.

Weak Oakflesh Balm

  • 51,953 x Earth Mote
  • 51,953 x Water Mote
  • 51,953 x Oil

At 36 XP per craft, this equates to ~ 1,870,308 XP which should get you to Level 200.
Benefits of leveling Up Armoring
Leveling up the Armoring has its own benefits. This will help you in crafting a better armor that is more powerful. The chances of getting the Perks and gem sockets with them are also improved by Leveling up the Armoring.

As you level up more recipes will be unlocked. Along with the more recipes, the more powerful versions of the existing recipe will also be unlocked. You should keep leveling up till you reach the max level of 200.

@Jardir this is a bug since game lunch, many other bugs like Adiana visual bugs still exist. you should still use light armor for extra damage and dodge. as a healer dodge help you alot because life staff makes tons of threat. i can`t see any bright future about this game development. also crafting in game looks useless because you can get 10-30 items from a single dungeon run. or alot from aoe farm spots with your group. also many from portals. at end game faction items are so op to get.
Jardir 10. Nov. 2021 um 6:47
