Otira Tunnel

This layout is a bit rushed, but I wanted to move on to other projects so I pushed this one out.

This layout depicts the 8.5km Otira Tunnel in the Southern Alps of New Zealand. with the two townships of Otira and Arthur's Pass at each end of the tunnel. The tunnel used to be electrified up until the 1st of November 1997 when it was replaced by a complicated Door ventilation system and specially modified DX class locomotives. Remnants of electrification can still be seen today but most remnants have been lost to time. the section of line is also one of the few lines in NZ still using banking engines as the gradient inside the tunnel is 1 in 33.
