How to Use a Controller

This is a guide on how to use a controller for the game New World. Read on to find out what controllers can be used in New World, and how to set a controller up.

Does New World Have Controller Support

Controllers Are Not Fully Supported On Launch

Unfortunately, the developers of New World have stated that the game will not fully support controllers, at least at launch. This means you won't be able to map your buttons in-game.

Using Steam Controller Support

If you want to use a controller to play New World, you can use Steam's Controller Support. You will have to enable the Configuration Support for each controller to use it.

How to Enable Controller Support


1- Launch Steam's Big Picture mode by clicking its icon at the top right of the Steam Window.
2- Once you're in Big Picture mode, click the cog icon on the top right of the screen to open up the settings.


3- From there, head into Controller Settings and you'll be able to see the checkboxes for all the controller configuration support.
4- Tick the checkbox for Xbox, PlayStation and Generic Gamepad Configuration Support to enable it.

What Controllers Can You Use?

As of this writing, there are six supported device categories, with more to come in the future.

• Steam Controller
  
• Playstation 4 Controller
  
• Xbox 360 Controller
  
• Xbox One Controller
  
• Any generic XInput Controller
  
• Any DirectInput gamepad

Note that the terms "PlayStation 4 controller", "Xbox 360 controller", and "Xbox one controller" also refer to any variant devices (such as fighting game joysticks) that use the same input protocol as the base model.

How to Remap Your Controller

You can change and remap your controller by going to Steam's Controller Configuration through Big Picture mode.

How to Open Controller Configuration



1- Launch Steam's Big Picture mode by clicking its icon at the Top Right of the Steam Window.


2- Once you're in Big Picture mode, click the cog icon on the top right of the screen to open up the settings.
3- Under the Controller category, select the Base Configuration button.


4- Select the Desktop Configuration to open the Controller Configuration.
5- You can click on any of the Tabs corresponding to the button to remap it.

How to Remap Your Controller’s Buttons

head to the “Library” section in Big Picture Mode and select a game you want to remap the controller’s buttons for.



Select “Manage Game” and then select “Controller Configuration”.



You’ll see Steam’s complex button-remapping screen. Whatever type of controller you have, you can use this interface to link the controller’s buttons to different mouse and keyboard events. For example, you could configure the Steam Controller’s touchpad or the joystick on another type of gamepad to function as a mouse, allowing you to use your controller in a game that was never designed to support controllers.



Other people have already done the work of creating controller profiles that allow you to use a Steam Controller or other types of controllers in different games. To download a pre-made profile, select “Browse Configs” at the bottom of the window ( its template config, you will read about it soon! ).



You’ll see different available layouts depending on which types of controller you’re using. For example, different configurations are available for the Steam Controller than the Xbox 360 controller ( also different for new world! dishonored 2 is just an example :> ). These types of controllers have different buttons and features, so configurations can’t be transferred between them.



To manually remap a group of buttons or single buttons, select it on the configuration screen. For example, if you wanted to remap the Y button on an Xbox controller, you’d select the pane with the Y button at the bottom right corner of the screen.



Steam offers many different options for configuring groups of buttons, joysticks, touchpads, or directional pads. For example, you could make the four buttons on the Xbox 360 controller function as a joystick, scroll wheel, or mouse. But, if you just wanted to change what the Y button does, you’d just select the “Y” button here.



Steam allows you to select any keyboard or mouse button the controller button you selected should function as. You can even use multi-button keyboard shortcuts.



The button remapping you choose will appear on the configuration screen. In the screenshot below, we’ve set the Y button to function as the “E” key in this game.

Steam will remember the button-remapping settings you provide and use them when you play that specific game. You can set different button-remapping settings for different games.



When doing something more advanced than remapping a single button, you’ll see quite a few options. For example, when remapping one of the Steam controller’s touchpads to function as a mouse, you’ll be able to adjust the sensitivity of the mouse and even the intensity of the haptic feedback the touchpad provides.



You can also tweak your controller configuration settings while playing a game. Open the Steam overlay—for example, by pressing Shift+Tab or pressing the Steam, Xbox, or PlayStation button on the center of your controller—and select the “Controller Configuration” option. This option will only be available if you launched the game from within Big Picture Mode.

Using Template Configs for your controller

If you're having difficulty setting up your controls, you can always choose a template to export. It's recommended you go by the WASD Template to use as your base settings.

How to Apply Template Configs


1- In the Controller Configuration, select "Browse Config".


2- Head to the Templates tab and select the Keyboard (WASD) and Mouse configuration.
3- Apply configurations and the settings from the template is now registered as your controller settings.

Alternative solutions

Please note, however, that New World will not work perfectly like this. The game is not designed for controller and gamepad control. We cannot guarantee that you will be able to use the full functionality of New World in this way.

Alternatively, you can also use the following programs. However, we do not guarantee the functionality of the external tools:

InputMapper [inputmapper.com]
DS4Windows [ds4windows.com]
JoyToKey [joytokey.net]

All of these are certainly not optimal solutions for playing with the controller, but at least they offer a way to experience New World with the gamepad. At least until, maybe at some point, the official support for it comes.

Drawbacks & Tips

Drawbacks

Because we are limited in what we can accomplish with a controller, the game, and Steam Configurations. The outcome isn’t exactly ideal. Consider the following scenario:

• In-game, the keyboard and mouse icons do not change because AGS did not provide players with any access to the API.
  
• Some gamepads aren’t up to standard and not all gamepads are the same. Due to quality control difficulties, even the same brand and type of controller may differ! While the setup has been carefully tested with a variety of controllers, individual results may vary. To get the most out of your Xbox One or Xbox Series 2 Elite Controller, pair it with the Wireless Adapter.
  
• You may get stuck in a menu action set. Although this should be unlikely, you might get stuck in a menu action set such as Map or Inventory if your controls and camera sensitivity have changed. There are countermeasures in place to avoid this, but it does happen occasionally. To exit out of the map, press your button for inventory and vice versa.
  

Tips

• Many issues may be fixed by setting in-game key bindings to default before using the configuration.
  
• Try a different controller because Steam doesn’t work with all controllers and some controllers are worn out, resulting in discrepancies.
  
• Restart the game or the controller. The old method of “turning it off and on” appears to work here every now and then!
  
• When feasible, use the Right Joystick and Right Trigger as a functioning mouse in the sub menus.
  
• To connect your controller, try to use just Bluetooth or an approved Wireless Adapter.
  
• Before starting the game, go to Steam Big Picture Mode Settings and activate support for the controller you want to use.
  
• To avoid controllers acting strangely, update the firmware on your controller.
  
• To overcome the Aim Assist problem, the players can try changing the Camera Sensitivity by going to Gameplay Settings. Adjusting the Camera Sensitivity according to your situation can help you aim well using a bow or a musket.
  
• Players should use the Mouse and Keyboard to access the main menu while playing the game, as accessing them while using the controller can cause problems.

Controller Limitations

There is No Aim Assist

Since there is no Aim Assist in the game, aiming with a bow or musket is harder on a controller. You can remedy this by adjusting the Camera Sensitivity in the Gameplay settings.

Menu Navigation is not Supported

Although it is possible, navigating through the main menu is not ideal when using the controller. Just use your Mouse and Keyboard if you're accessing the main menu inside the game.

controller option in steam is like a simple hotkey software. because those apps are not allowed to run in background ( for scripts and bots ) so i think you should working with steam because steam controller configuration is the interface between the controller and the game

I'm currently using an Xbox One Controller. It works fine on every game that I've played. I've never needed to use a configuration before to play a game, I just plug it into my pc and it works.

@TribalSage please explain your situation and also let me know more about what controller you are using. controllers analogs getting unresponsive or getting drifts after a time. some of them having these problems since launch like early releases editions. if you feel its not hardware related check base Configuration button at steam.

Whenever I try to load any template configurations from the suggested community ones my left analog stick won't move the character. I have no idea what going on and why it's not working, any suggestions?
