How to smoke marijuana via a bong

This guide will teach you how to consume marijuana via a bong.

Step #1

First things first: fill the bong up with some water, preferably cold. You can add ice cubes to your bong to make it that's your thing.

See that long glass piece? That's called the bong stem, and it needs to be submerged in at least 1 inch in the water.

Step #2

Get out your marijuana, and manually break off some smaller pieces of the nugs. These are going to act as stopping pieces, which will disallow our finer pieces of marijuana from falling straight into the bong water.


Break some larger pieces off of your nug and then put them in-between the teeth of the grinder. Grind them until fine.

Now, this part is optional, but I would recommend separating your ground up weed and your stopping pieces. This makes for quick bowl packs.

Put a stopping piece into the bottom of a freshly cleaned bowl, and then put some ground up marijuana on top. You want to press down fairly firmly but make sure to not pack too tight, as this could disallow airflow. Once you have a nice firmly packed bowl you can then place it into the bong stem. (The long piece of glass)

After placing the bowl into the bong stem, place the bong stem back into the bong.

Step #3

By now you're probably drooling. However, before you enjoy that nice bowl you just packed, it's important to know how to properly rip a bong.

You want to get your lighter (preferably a torch lighter) and light the marijuana at the edge of the bowl. Then, slowly inhale to stoke the flame. Once you have stoked it to get however much smoke you wanted, pull the bowl from the bong stem and deeply inhale.

I have more tips, top bong looks pro:
- No need for stopping nugs if your stem can hold screens.
- If the bong has a carb hole (like in the top picture) you can cover it while inhaling and you can clear the smoke without removing the stem by uncovering it (use thumb).
