Le Ale 801/940 sono dei complessi di automotrici elettriche studiati e realizzati per il trasporto di tipo pendolare.
Il progetto nasce nel 1973, frutto delle esperienze acquisite coi precedenti gruppi Ale 803 (su cui questo treno basa la propria struttura) ed Ale 601. Le unità di prima serie vengono immesse in servizio nel 1976.
La composizione tipica di questo convoglio prevede una automotrice Ale 801 (con comparto bagagliaio a ridosso della cabina), due rimorchi Le 108 ed una automotrice Ale 940 (priva del bagagliaio ma con 14 posti a sedere addizionali. Il treno era studiato per entrare in composizione abbinato ad altri convogli similari, fino ad un massimo di 12 pezzi.
Non si trattava di un mezzo rivoluzionario per l'epoca, visto l'azionamento di tipo reostatico, quanto di un rotabile affidabile e funzionale per il servizio che era chiamato a svolgere.
Già dopo pochi anni di servizio, le porte intercomunicanti delle cabine vennero soppresse; sulle unità di seconda serie venne installato direttamente il gancio di tipo automatico.

Gli accantonamenti sono iniziati già prima del 2010, fino alla totale dismissione nel 2016. Le demolizioni sono in corso.
Alcuni treni sono stati acquisiti da TFT ed effettuano tutt'ora servizio nella rete sociale Toscana.

The Ale 801/940 are electric railcars designed and built for commuter transport.
The project was born in 1973, as result of the experiences acquired with the previous Ale 803 groups (on which this train bases its structure) and Ale 601. The first series started their service 1976.
The typical composition of this train includes an Ale 801 railcar (with luggage compartment close to the cabin), two Le 108 trailers and an Ale 940 railcar (without the luggage compartment but with 14 additional seats). The train was designed to be coupled with other similar trains, up to a maximum of 12 pieces.
It was not a revolutionary vehicle for the time, as it was rheostatic drive, but a reliable and functional rolling stock for the service it was called to perform.
After a few years of service, the intercommunicating doors of the cabins were suppressed; the automatic coupler was installed directly on the second series units.

Dismissions started before 2010, up to total disposal in 2016. Demolitions are underway.
Some trains have been acquired by TFT and still operate in that Tuscan rail network.
