Purpose of counseling:
'Counseling is the process used by leaders to review with a subordinate the subordinate's demonstrated performance and potential'

Intro
The SMA helps explain counseling and its future...

In the Army, counseling serves several important needs:
  • documents IN WRITING a Soldier's behavior/task etc.
  • allows the Soldier and others to track their performance over time
  • informs the Soldier of the performance standard they must adhere to
  • identifies areas to work-on before they become a problem
4 Stage Counseling Phase
Army leaders use a 4 part counseling process:

1) Identify the need for counseling
2) Prepare for counseling
3) Conduct the counseling session
4) Follow-up

1) Identify the need for counseling
It can be for various reasons such as: Initial, Event, Professional Growth etc. or may be after a certain amount of time has passed (such as Performance counseling).

2) Prepare for counseling
Select a suitable area free of distractions/disturbances and with enough time not to be rushed. Give at least 24hrs. of notice to the subordinate in question (so they can prepare themselves). Make an outline/prepare your counseling session with specific points. Create a positive environment for both you and your fellow Soldier.

3) Conduct the counseling session
Find an appropriate site to conduct the session (free of distractions; offers privacy; under cover etc.). Bring all related notes/documents/training aids that you need to illustrates your points. Explain your points to your Soldier in a professional manner (no cursing; getting mad; being aggressive etc.). Let your Soldier give you some context/explanation/rebuttal etc. for their action(s) in question. Listen with attention and an open mind.

4) Follow-up
In between this current session and the next, make sure that your Soldier is implementing the 'Plan of Action'. Make sure your Soldier has all the tool/resources/information necessary to complete the needed improvement(s). In the next session, return to the previous counseling form and update the 'Assessment of the Plan of Action'.
Types of Counseling
ALL counseling falls under the branch of Developmental Counseling

Developmental counseling are:
  • Event counseling
  • Performance counseling
  • Professional Growth counseling
Event Counseling
Specific Event or Situation

7 examples of Event-orientated counseling:

1. Specific Instances of superior or substandard performance
Ex: for having performed well at the Soldier of the Quarter Board
Ex: for having been late to a formation

2. Reception and Integration counseling
Ex: Familiarization of a newly arrived Soldier to your unit as to the performance expectations

3. Crisis counseling
Ex: when a Soldier is dealing with a divorce

4. Referral counseling
Ex: referring a Soldier to seek mental health support after noticing warning signs

5. Promotion counseling
Ex: a Soldier has an upcoming promotion board an needs guidance

6. Transition counseling
Ex: a Soldier separating from the Army or to another duty station

7. Adverse Separation Counseling
Ex: when a Soldier is involuntarily separated from the Army under 'other than honorable service'
Performance Counseling
'Performance counseling is the review of a subordinate’s duty performance during a specified period.'

This type of counseling is often used when no other counseling is better served and a certain amount of time has past (a month's time is the standard).

In this session you must:
  • review the past months objectives
  • set goals for the next session (short/long term goals)

Example:
Last months counseling objectives
  • Short term goal of passing physical fitness test with 90% - REACHED (92%)
  • Long term goal of preparing for the promotion board - COMPLETED

Future Goals for next counseling session
  • Short term goal of preparing for Soldier of the Quarter Board (in 1 month)
  • Long term goal of passing the promotion board - PASSED
Professional Growth Counseling
'Professional growth counseling includes planning for the accomplishment of individual and professional goals.'

For 'real world' applications this usually means:
  • civilian related education
  • military schools
  • improving/eliminating personal shortcomings

For MILSIM this can mean:
  • preparing for internal promotion
  • getting unit qualification/training (JTAC/Sniper/EOD etc.)
  • filling your unit admin position (web master/S-shop positions etc.)
Initial Counseling
Of all the types of counseling the most important is the 'initial' counseling

This is because it sets the record straight on :
  • what is expected of the Soldier
  • what is expected of his Leaders
  • what future goals should be realized
Frequency of Counseling
Counseling in the Military should be done on a monthly basis at a minimum

If no other counseling is needed (Event/Performance/Professional) then a monthly counseling is needed to summarize recent activity

Typical points include:
  • most recent physical fitness test results
  • Soldier's day-to-day performance/behavior
  • 3 short/long term goals
  • 3 sustained/needs improvement goals
  • upcoming events
  • ***evaluating past month(s) counseling results***
Counseling for Arma
If you are part of a MILSIM you probably have already been 'counseled'

When you look at the 'terms & conditions' of a unit it will talk about items like:
  • having reached a certain age (ex. 16+)
  • having certain MODS (ex. ACE/Team Speak/Community Addons etc.)
  • follow a 'code of conduct' (ex. no cursing, maintaining a military bearing etc.)

Examples like these are similar to an Army counseling
Counseling Examples
Key Points
Regardless of the type of counseling being used:
  • set up 'short/long term' goals
  • identify 3 areas of sustained/needs improvement
  • review any appropriate results from previous 'Plans of Action/Assessment of the Plan of Action'
Conclusion
Counseling is known as Developmental and has 3 parts:
  • Event
  • Performance
  • Professional Growth

Counseling allows:
- subordinate Soldiers to understand what is expected of them and their leaders
- a written record of performance
- avoid issues before they become a problem

"Leadership is the art of getting people to do more than
the science of management says is possible"

- Retired Army Gen. Colin Powell
