Introduction.
Hello & thanks for viewing this short guide on how to modify the game to suit you.

In this guide i'm going to go over a few things:

  • How to edit Outlasts config files in order to increase your Field of View,

  • Perhaps more later.
A Few Things Before We Begin.
Before we start editing files we need to understand a number of things.

1: This is not going to be really hard to do, BUT it does require you to think a bit & if you mess something up it CAN & WILL break your game so you'll have to redownload the corrupt files using Steam Verifying.

NOTE: If you're unsure of what you should be editing then DO NOT TOUCH IT!

2: As i stated in the Introduction i do not intend to give you the ability to cheat in this guide, however scripting can lead to cheating so if you're inclined to cheat that's not my concern and you do as you wish.

3: The things i place in this guide i do not consider as a cheat because they don't make the game any easier they just increase the players ability to enjoy the game more.

4: There are many different values in the config files you can edit to make the game more enjoyable for you, so if you choose to go and edit other files then you may do so at your own leisure, just remember what i said above do not touch what you're unsure of.

5: You cannot get a VAC Ban from editing a script file, VAC Bans are only obtained by using 3rd Party Software such as a Script changer that is run in the background of your game whilst you're playing, an example of this is a "Wall Hack". What we are doing is simply editing values in a game file which isn't illegal or bannable. (Since with every update the script will be rewritten & you'll have to do this again).
Initiating Modifying the Configs.
As you'll notice in most games, the default value of FOV is generally around 90 or somewhere around this mark, this is due to Consoles of the generation not long passed being unable to render such a large amount of props or action all at once so game developers had to reduce the FOV for them so that they could keep a smooth and constant framerate. But here in the PC Realm we don't need to worry about this and modders & scripters alike find ways to increase their gaming experience by doing what i am about to teach you below. So without any more hold ups, here is how it's done!

First off we need to find our Steam folder on our Hard Drives, mine is located on my D Drive. The default install location for programs is C:/ProgramFiles/Steam/, unless you specify otherwise this is where your folder will be.

Next we need to open our Steam folder and then locate Outlast which you can find by adding /SteamApps/Common/Outlast on the end of the Steam Folder directory in the directory bar at the top of the window.

From here we need to open the folder inside Outlast called OLGame:

And after that open the folder called Config.

From this point on you'll be located here:

Open the file called DefaultGame.ini and it should bring up a Notepad window like mine here:

NOTE: If it does not open up a NotePad Window then it will ask you if you want to search online for a file to open the current file type or explore windows for a program, click explore windows & find the Notepad app and then click it and OK,

Once you've opened up the DefaultGame.ini file you will need to use the hotkey ,CTRL+F in order to open up the find window so you can quickly search for the values we want to edit.
Increasing Our Field of View.
To begin with our modifications to Outlast we'll be modifying the default value of the Field of View to something a lot wider & a whole lot nicer.

In the search box type "FOV" & it will locate any codes with the letters FOV in them, the commands we're looking for are displayed in the picture below:

NOTE: The default value of the FOV's will be different for you as i've already modified my code. You can increase the FOV or Decrease the FOV at your own choice and choose which of the values is correct for you.

Increasing the FOV makes your screen appear to be wider & allows you to see at a "Your number here" degree view so say if we put 120 FOV you'll be able to see at a 120 degree angle of the screen.

CAUTION: Increasing the Field Of View requires more processing power from your computers Graphics Card & depending on the amount of props can require a good CPU as well, so if you're not running a good PC with a decent Graphics Card & Processor then you'll need to set it at 90 or below to get a smoother frame rate.

NOTE: A smooth frame rate for anybody who isn't a tech guru is above 30 "Frames Per Second" or "FPS", so always aim for a minimum of 30 FPS.
There are a number of ways you can check your FPS in games, you can use programs such as
FRAPS: http://www.fraps.com/ (This is a Free Screen Recording Program & FPS Log in 1 or you can purchase it for an even better experience)
You can also check your FPS in most games via using the ingame Developer Console which can be accessed by pressing the ~, key next to the number 1 on the Keyboard and typing "stat fps" for Unreal Engine games.

Here's what you're going to be editing:

This is the standard FOV for your character when you're not holding up the Video Recorder:

This is the FOV whilst you're Running:

This is the FOV during use of the Video Recorder:

NOTE: The NV in some of the codes represents Night Vision mode.

Set these FOV's to the values you wish.

And after you're done DON'T FORGET TO CTRL+S or FILE SAVE!

Load up the game and enjoy your larger FOV, You're Welcome.

My recommended FOV Values:

1 Screen with 16:9 Ration and 1920x1080 Resolution. FOV = 120

1 Screen with 16:10 Ration and 1680x1050 Resolution. FOV = 100 or below

1 Screen with 4:3 Ration and 1280x1024 Resolution or below that. FOV = 90 or less

3 Screens set to play in Eyefinity with Ratio 16:9 or 16:10 and any resolution above 1920x1080. FOV = 180.

These FOV values will give you the best experience for your screen & make it much easier to see what is going on around you & not just what you see infront of you.
