88式通用机枪是由中国北方工业设计制造的一款5.8毫米口径通用机枪，1988年有关项目正式立项，1989年7月开始研发，历经试验、国家靶场设计定型试验以及热区、风沙地区和寒区部队试验后于1999年7月定型。

该武器具有射击精度高，后坐力小，可控性好的优点，在制造材料则是采用工程塑料与铝合金等新材料，还有金属表面磷化等新技术应用，全枪寿命可达到25000发。
