Norfolk Southern SD40E No. 6356

(Ferrari suggested using the SD70 model, and I can see why, seeing as this looks an awful lot like an SD50 / SD40E).

NS 6356 is a rebuilt SD50. She was originally built in 1984 as ConRail No. 6772, and later inherited by Norfolk Southern. Her original NS number was 5439.

The SD40E is yet another one of Norfolk Southern’s rebuilt locomotive designs. There are 58 of them, and they were all rebuilt from SD50s. The prototype SD40E was released in 2008, with the last entering service in 2014. 6356 was the second-to-last SD40E, entering service in December 2014.

The SD40Es feature numerous upgrades from the original SD50 design, although the power output was reduced from 3,500 to 3,000 horsepower. They feature EMD’s EM2000 microprocessor control system (like what the UK’s Class 66 has) as well as an automatic engine start/stop system and compatibility with Positive Train Control.

Today NS 6356 is still in service, along with all the other SD40Es. The former ConRail 6772 is now 37 years old.
