- Explosions.
- Shading on models is smoother.
- Cloud sprites (new effect).
- Sun/moon shine over the ocean.
- Weather effects.
- Higher poly Jet models
Things that look better in AFD1.
- Textures for assets and scenery (higher resolution, more colour information and more detailed, for the most part).
- Colour palette is richer.
- Technique used to render the sun is so much nicer.
- Draw distance.
- Environment map reflection on aircraft canopies.
- When you blow up an enemy target (they leave a nice smoke trail behind)
Stuff that stayed the same.
- High polygon jet models, for enemy targets (in Ace Combat 5 and Zero, for example; enemy targets are of much lower quality than the player's model)
- Highly detailed textures for both player jets and enemy targets.
- Jet's textures on PlayStation 2 are of the same resolution as in the original on Dreamcast.
