Here's the icing on the cake though for the lore of this antagonist: XANA in lore used to be a simple protection algorithm used by the military. It's main purpose was to protect humanity. Someone got the great idea to upload an IIRC virus into XANA, which turned it's actions hostile. It had access to satellites and their dishes, climate control stations, orbital gravitational lasers, the whole nine yards.
