Salvaging "Fish Heads" (Mackerel) [OUTDATED]
By TruBlu
Why read this Guide?
They are difficult to salvage because of the composition of materials. The interior panels are made of aluminum(Furnace) while the frame and outer panel are made of Nanocarbon(processor). To salvage it, you must separate the aluminum panels from the Nanocarbon framing, but there is no clear way to detach it. The purpose of this guide is to explain how to properly salvage these "Fish Heads".

What Is a Fish Head?
First of all, what are "Fish Heads"? Fish Heads are basically the cockpits of the ships, in this case Mackerels. I chose to give them this name because they are like actual Fish Heads, meant to be cut off from the rest of the ship and hard to salvage.
Before Salvaging a Fish Head...
There are a few things you should do before breaking apart these Fish Heads:
  • Remove all valuable items like storage bins, seats, lights and computer terminals and put them in the barge(Not doing so before cutting can risk damaging the items)(People don't seem too concerned about not doing this).
  • Carefully cut out the glass window on the front and place it in the furnace, you can use the gap to remove valuable items.
  • Separate the Fish Head from the rest of the ship by cutting the yellow cut points.
  • Separate the two other nanocarbon panels from either side of the Fish Head(This will make cutting the Fish Head easier and lighter).
  • If you have access to them, you can use tethers to tether the Fish Head away from the main body of the ship, making previous steps easier(This will only work if you have cut the yellow cut points).
Salvaging the Fish Head
To successfully salvage a Fish Head, you should follow these steps:
  1. Use the scanner(T) to locate 8 aluminum bars inbetween the interior panels, should be colored in light blue. (EDIT: They changed the colors so the beams will be colored orange instead.)
  2. Use the cutter in precision mode(used for cutting yellow cut points) to destroy the aluminum structure inbetween the interior panels. Position yourself so you are looking into the gap between the nanocarbon outer panel and the outside of the interior plating, this gap is present on the upper and lower half of the Fish Head.
  3. Cut all 8 aluminum structural beams until all interior panels are separated from the nanocarbon frame. They should pop out or become loose once separated completely.
  4. Now that all interior panels are separated, you can pull them away from the nanocarbon frame and put them into the furnace, and the nanocarbon into the processor.

This is what the inside should look like:
Conclusion
Congratulations, you have successfully salvaged a Fish Head and have gained every dime you can get out of it. You can repeat these steps for every Mackerel you claim and salvage. I hope this guide has been helpful. Happy Cutting!

@Seb please learn to recognize bad design; the Mackerel, being the first type of ship the player has access to, should not have complex disassembly requirements; in fact, I think they should properly decouple the glass from the nanocarbon by making it a panel that's attached by cut points, like in literally every other ship in the game .

I liked that more. Now it is all too obvious cutting points...

Their current version really doesn't require a guide... I hate when devs make things simpler because people just won't learn! It took me 30 seconds to figure out AND there were guides here and on youtube so it wasn't too complicated... Oh well... :sefacepalm:

They come apart much more naturally now, only with cut points

@Tiromir Oh dang, what a shame. I'll have to spend a few months doing research before updating this guide, but I'll get back to you when I find out who asked

Outdated! For release, the devs have made the fish head incredibly simpler to disassemble!

I've always used that technique, it works great, is pretty fun and allows of a clean salvage. I was about to make a guide about it but i'm glad i don't have to :p Thanks! Now i can go back to actually making profits :cozyspaceengineersc:

Nice guide! Will definitely keep this in mind for a mini-me sticker!

You cut the fish? Just put the entire thing in the processor, ez.

I always detach everything inside the cockpit and leave it in there. When I burn the square corners everything just pops out neatly. I yeet away the door frame and can toss everything confortably into the barge from above. Just dont push without tethering anything. The terminals will always magically attract and destroy each other. Every. Effin. Time.
