Basics
The basics of the game are simple, you must move Boko to the event squares on the map, beat any enemies in combat and level up to level 100.
The game is not punishing as losing a battle pushes you down to 1HP with all items and levels remaining untouched.
All Items found in the game can be transferred to the main game and some Items can only be found in Chocobo World.
How to play
Chocobo world only uses a few buttons for controls.
The arrow keys move Boko, the ctrl key brings up the menu and the esc key closes the game.
Menu
The menu in chocobo world has 6 sections, each cover a different aspect.

Map The map shows Boko's current location (flashing black square) the event locations (black squares)
Below the map shows Boko's current level and the total gametime.

ItemsThe Item screen shows you how many items you have and in what rank.

Status
The status screen shows Boko's current weapon stats, his current level and HP and his ID number.

Move
The move screen lets you change the move setting. The move setting controls how long it will take Boko to reach an event without player input.

Event Wait The event wait screen lets you choose if you want the game to wait for you to hit ctrl to start an event or trigger them automaticly.

Mog
After finding Mog you get this setting, if you have him set to standby he will help Boko in a fight.
Battles
Battles uses a time counter to decide who attacks, with the number on the left being the enemies timer and the one on the right is Boko’s.
The first timer to reach 0 attacks and then the timers are reset.
By pressing the left and right arrows alternately you can increase the speed your timer decreases.
Weapons
Weapons in Chocobo World decide the amount of damage dealt when Boko attacks, each weapon has 4 different numbers, these numbers are the amount of damage Boko will deal, with one number being chosen at random when Boko attacks to decide the amount of damage dealt.
You can get new weapons from encountering Moomba.
Levels
Instead of experience, after each battle Boko gains a magic stone that is randomly placed on a 3x3 grid and when three line up in a row, Boko levels up.

Events occur whenever you reach a black spot on the map, there are 4 types of event:

- Apparently the Chocobo with ID 211 is OPed. You can recycle "DO OVER" a bunch of times to get that ID, or can just download it from the Chocobo World wiki (tiny mediafire link at the bottom of the page...you'll need to rename the file to "chocorpg.ff8" to make it work with the current savegame file name though)
- When playing manually, if you HOLD DOWN the direction key, you move faster. This may be obvious to other players, but was not obvious to me. I did not learn this until after my chocobo reached lv. 100
- In order to fight the Demon King, you MUST change the movement to 1 , and I think event to ON, and manually hit a dot. You cannot meet the Demon King while the Chocobo wanders on autopilot.

- The items are not set in Chocobo World. They are randomized when you send your Chocobo HOME. This means that if you save your Chocobo World game, and send your Chocobo HOME, the items may be different if you load it and then send your Chocobo HOME a second time.
- Yup, there's an exploit. Run both Chocobo World and FFVIII simultaneously, Alt-Tab to FFVIII, Send your Chocobo HOME to collect items, then back to the WORLD, then Alt-Tab to Chocobo World and hit Ctrl twice (bring up the menu, exit menu), then Alt-Tab to FFVIII and repeat to collect the same items a second time. Occasionally, you may screw up and be unable to send your Chocobo back to the WORLD. Not a problem. Just hit DO OVER, HOME, WORLD, then Alt-Tab, bit Ctrl twice, Alt-Tab back to FFVII, and you're good to go.

Thx for the guide! I just wanted to add a few clarifications here for future me that was not clear when I first read your guide:
- Ctrl is used for ALL actions in the game. Not only to bring up the menu, but also to enter an event, and to wake up the Chicobo if it's resting/eating/fishing/etc.
- The MOVE option is great if you want the game to auto-play. Move 6 means the Chocobo can wander and hit any event without input. Move 1 means you manually control the direction of the Chocobo at all times.
- EVENT OFF is a great option for auto-playing, but be careful when you approach lv. 50. If you hit lv. 50-51 while EVENT OFF is enabled, you may miss a one-time only event that can only be played if you have EVENT ON
- The loot table is incomplete. There are more items we can get.

Same as Ariga almost 6 years ago, I did not get the final upgrade when beating the Demon King. Still going to wander around to find Koko to see if that does it.

Also, it might be in an old comment or something, but I could not find the Demon King after he kidnapped Koko. I let the game run for more than 12 hours without finding him once. Not sure if it was just bad RNG, but based on a tip I found on the wiki, I set the Move option to 1, and the very next fight was the King. So if anyone else is having trouble finding him, try doing the same and see if that helps you.

Thank christ you made this simplified for steam users because this mode was originally like for people in Japan people in the US couldn't really play this

@Nesmuelm having gotten to lvl 100, I've found it's just RNG, I get as many rank A compared to rank D as in earlier levels
Nesmuelm Apr 24, 2020 @ 12:13am
First time I've played this in a long time.

Does the level/map have any bearing on the rarity of the items that are available from the cactaur dude?

IE will I get more rank "A" items on level 99 vs level 1?

@TimeTurner The only danger of Event Wait Off is your first encounter at level 50. Leave it running and monitor it increasingly as you approach level 50. You'll want to switch it off sometime around level 45-49 - getting 1-5 levels isn't too much time actively playing (running, swapping left and right to speed up the ATB, waking up the bird, and intelligently using the map to go to the nearest event blips saves a LOT of time over AFKing the game) and the reward is at least somewhat worthwhile. After you get that first event at level 50 (you'll get a kiss from a female chocobo that you rescue), you're golden.

Also, when is it safe to turn Event Wait off so I can leave it running in the background?
Sharticus:DestroyerOfToilets Aug 25, 2019 @ 11:35am
When you get an item from Cactuar, is it just one item, or are there multiple? Because I swear, I got like 4 bags, and when I brought them into FF8, it was like a full page of loot. I'm currently trying to figure out what happened there.
