The Difficulties in Doom are very Iconic, but unfortunately not very descriptive, this guide exists to better help you and your friends know what your getting into, we will also be going over some extra difficulty options

Enemy and Item placement
Unlike most games in the current millennium Enemy and Item placement differs from each difficulty, well not each as you can see here

There's only Easy, Medium, and Hard

What happened to the other two?

well

I'M TOO YOUNG TO DIE!

and

HEY NOT TOO ROUGH.

share enemy and item placement, but they Differ else where

ULTRA- VIOLENCE.

and

NIGHTMARE!

Also Share Enemy and Item placement, but also differ else where
I'M TOO YOUNG TO DIE

-Doubles all ammo pickups, for example
*lets say you picked up a singular rocket on Hurt me plenty, you would get one Rocket, but on I'm To Young Too Die you would get 2 rockets

- DoomGuy receives half the damage he would normally take
*lets say DoomGuy got hit by an Imp fire ball on Hurt Me Plenty, and it dealt 24 damage, then by the same fire ball, with the same Rng, but on I'm Too Young To Die, then he would only take 12 Damage
Hey not too rough.

This skill level has the same Enemy and Item placement as I'm Too Young To Die! however, it lacks the half damage or double ammo
Hurt Me Plenty.

This Difficulty has the Enemies and Items with the medium flag, nothing too special

Typically going from Easy to Medium doubles the enemy count in certain spots, other times demons are simply replaced

This Hell Knight gets a friend on Hurt Me Plenty

Disclaimer, this is an example map that is not in the game, it is just a single room

Ultra- Violence

Just like Hurt Me Plenty, nothing special, just uses things that should appear on Hard

This is the Difficulty speed runners tend to play
This is also the Difficulty played in the "Pacifist" challenge / speed run category
NIGHTMARE!

Oh boy this is where it gets exciting again

- Fast monsters is forced to be enabled (see my Demon Attributes guide for details it differs from demon to demon)

- Respwaning Monsters is also forced to be enabled

- Hey its not all bad, double ammo is back!

-oh wait cheats are disabled oof, IDDQD won’t get you through this one

Trivia there is two cheats that work on nightmare

IDCLEV (the level select one)
And
IDDT the one you use on the auto map

This is because those 2 are handled else where in the code
Extra options
The difficulties aren't fixed (except for nightmare)
You can do -fast as a paremeter before launching the game

In source ports like Lzdoom you can simply go to gameplay options and find Double ammo or fast monsters, there’s even new options there such as infinite ammo.

however in source ports unlike Lzdoom you will need to rely on perimeters

Credit where credit is due
