The Humber Bridge

The Humber Bridge is a 2.2km long suspension bridge to the West of the city of Kingston upon Hull in the UK. Its construction began in 1972 and it was opened to traffic in 1981, and at the time, was the longest single span suspension bridge in the world, not least the UK; so long and high that the top of the towers are further apart than the bottom due to the curvature of the earth. The bridge replaced a long detour, hovercraft or ferry journey across the Humber and cut travel times between East Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire by a significant amount. The bridge is still open today and carries roughly 120000 vehicles over it per week.
