Flaire The Spellblade (DST!)

Description

DS version: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2448845012

Intro
Flaire is a princess, who would much rather be a spellblade! Secretly training to become one, a strange voice lead her to the Don't Starve world, where she continues her training without interruption...

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Basic Usage:

* To cast a spell, you must have a useable weapon in hand. (Swords, spears, tentacle spikes, etc.)
* Left clicking on the Mana gauge cycles forward in your spell repertoire, and right clicking it cycles backwards. Note that you must have a weapon in hand for this to work.
  • You can also set a hotkey for spell-swapping in the configuration settings in the main menu (e.g Control + Camera Rotate).

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀     Stats!

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀     Perks!

  • Flaire has access to a new resource called Mana; this is her bread and butter. When a spell is cast, it uses up a chunk of mana.

  • Mana regenerates passively only when treading upon nature turf. This makes some places indirectly more dangerous, so be careful!

  • The above means the same for handcrafted turfs like wooden flooring and such. However, she can create a structure that will not only increase mana regen in the area, but also allow you to regen mana on those handcrafted turfs. So don't worry about base building!

You can find this structure under Flaire's character recipes, and it must be prototyped with an Alchemy Engine.

  • Flaire has the ability to cast spells. These can be used to heal, dish out good damage, and more, utilizing the mana gauge.

  • You start with two base spells, a damaging and a healing spell; however, more can be obtained by defeating enemies, having used at least one spell in the battle. It's a low chance for it to drop, but gets higher with each spell cast.

  • Flaire can also attune to the elements! Well, not by herself. She's not experienced a spellblade enough for that yet! When you face the elements in a rudimentary way, you (potenially forcefully) attune yourself to that element, also known as aspect. Certain aspects enhance some spells, but weaken others. Careful with those fire hounds/moisture meter!
  • Adding to the above, the special power of gems does allow her to activate an aspect on demand, but be careful- once you're in an aspect, you have to ride it out fully!

  • As a spellblade, Flaire is pretty accustomed to sword-casting. Therefore, she's much better at casting spells with sword weapons compared to other weapons (spears, hambat, etc.)

  • When you hit an enemy three times (with a castable weapon), you activate your combo! Your base spells then cost 40% less mana. Note the combo effect won't pop up if you don't have enough mana for a spell.

  • Additionally, she starts with a blueprint for her very own sword, like Wigfrid has her own spear! (But, you have to craft it first!)

  • The sword has 180 durability and deals 42.5 damage.

  • Finally, when you've learned every additional spell, Flaire will consume 50% less durability when fighting or casting with sword-weapons!

  • Eating prepared crockpot foods gives Flaire a certain amount of mana instantly. The amount recovered is determined by the food's hunger value. The bigger it is, the more mana it regens; however, if the meal is too big, she will only recover a small amount of mana.

  • As a princess, she is used to being a bit more reserved at the dinner table. Therefore, you cannot eat foods while full, preventing mass healing/other effects from foods- but most importantly, controls how much mana you can instantly regenerate.

  • Flaire's favourite food is a Breakfast Skillet! Note the bonus hunger from being favourite does not reduce the mana recovered from eating it.

  • You can now cast a spell in succession on different targets for almost no mana cost; known as chain-casting!
Most spells can be chained up to 6 times in a row, with the exception of Manaburst; which may only be chain-casted once. Vivify and Gleam cannot be chain-casted.

  • A brand new spell; Vivify! (Resurrection spell!)
You can get it by crafting a Telltale Heart. When cast, it gives the caster (not the ghost player!) a max-health penalty. This penalty however is only half that of what a Telltale Heart would take.

  • Spell blueprint changes!
Only you can pick up your spellprint for one minute after it spawns (or as soon as you've picked it up once). After that, you can exchange them!

  • Manaburst changes!
Manaburst grants a short damage buff, which may be constantly refreshed by casting any spell or fighting with a sword. Specifically, it grants you between 5-20% extra damage dealt based on your current aspect, on top of a flat extra 8 damage for every attack you deal. You can find finer details in the tips thread below!

  • Boss-mana-regen!
If you're fighting a boss monster with your Manaburst damage buff active, instead of activating your combo every three hits, you will regenerate some mana instead—provided your mana is below the combo spell cost. Once again, you can find finer details in the tips thread below!

  • Compatibility with Uncompromising Mode!
Flaire has a few additions when playing with Uncompromising Mode, all listed in the tips thread below.

Other features include:
  • Custom quotes (DS + ROG fully done)
  • Custom voice!
  • Mod support (She can automatically use modded swords to cast, so long as they have the word "Sword" in the name!)
    If you have a special modded weapon you'd like Flaire to be able to cast with, there are tags you can add to your weapon;
    - "spellbladeflaire_wepSword" for sword weapons
    - "spellbladeflaire_wepOther" for other weapon types

  • Spellcast hotkeys! Configure in mod settings in the main menu

Also, I recently decided to make a Ko-fi page! If you like Flaire and have some coins to spare, you could throw them here:

A "guarded casting" would be a good, high tier passive skill to give her some interesting ways to block high burst damage or avoid stun locking, by casting a spell at the right timing. And it wouldn't need any new hotkeys: If an attack hits Flaire right when her Manaburst deals damage or up to 0.5~1s after dealing damage, the hit(s) is blocked. Other effects can be added depending on how spammable it is or not. If it has a cooldown time that prevents spamming like a 10s or so, it could even refund the mana spent so you can immediately follow up with another Manaburst. If Heal is used, instead of refunding Mana, a successful parry heals additional health for Flaire or her target. Being hit too early should still cancel the spell however, so some timing would be required to use her spell parry.

Great mod! Interesting spell settings! How about getting it translated?

Agree about the keys, the solution is you can always introduce another hotkey like with quick cast but just for this protective/movement spell.

I hadn't actually- The problem is that those are usually bound to a mouse action, so you'd have to be able to intuitively switch spell casting with the dodge which sounds challenging to implement. I think having a unique spell for it won't work too well either, since it'd be time sensitive and you'd have to flip through your spells quickly and back when you want to use it.

Either way, I think it's a cool candidate for a skill tree entry if I find a good way to circumvent that problem. Thanks for the suggestion! :luv:

Have you ever considered adding a spell that will allow Flaire to avoid damage? Like Wanda's backstep watch, Wortox's soul hop, Wigfrid's shield, etc. Anything that when used at right time makes you dodge/block hit at the cost of some mana. To me characters that have this kind of option plays much more fun.

Glad to have you back Pranta!

I definitely haven't scrapped the skill tree (though I dread thinking about the power scaling with it ;v;) I'd like to see where Klei takes them with the rest of the original cast, and how important shadow/lunar affinities become with the coming content updates as well. But yeah, I appreciate your enthusiasm and thanks for playing as usual! :luv:

Coming back to DST after a few months, can't wait to try Flaire after the most recent changes!

BTW, couldn't help but notice how she lost her shadow affinity with Dark Swords in exchange for a more "neutral" general sword buff once her spell mastery is acquired. Does this mean that the skill tree you had considered at some point is still a possibility? Honestly, can't wait to see some shadow affinity Guard or maybe a Lunar affinity Gleam. :3

Anyways, stuff looks great. Thnx for the mod!

@Luneyl I'm glad you think so. I was on the fence about whether I was just bad at Uncomp hahah ;p

@Muchuu Thank you for playing! I appreciate it :luv:

Love the new buffs for Uncompromising Mode, she needed them.
