Description
In the 1970s Ontario Provincial Government wanted to develop a fully automatic medium capacity transit system. The result of this development was the fittingly named Intermediate Capacity Transit System (ICTS). The ICTS project was absorbed by the Urban Transportation Development Corporation, a now defunct Ontario crown corporation, in 1975. It still ran on conventional steel wheels but, by using linear induction motors, it was supposed to be able to sit lower than other vehicles at the time and more weather resistant as the system does not rely of friction to accelerate or brake. The first system was Toronto's Scarborough RT (now a.k.a. Line 3) in March of 1985.

The system was moderately successful and 3 systems purchased the system in the 1980s: the Scarborough RT in Toronto, Canada in 1985, SkyTrain in Vancouver, Canada also in 1985, and the Detroit People Mover in Detroit, USA in 1987. The Toronto system is unique as it incorporates a driver cab.

Each of these systems continue to run Mk.1 trains to this day.

The UTDC was bought by Bombardier in 1992 who renamed the ICTS system to the INNOVIA Advanced Rapid Transit (ART) and later INNOVIA Metro.
