FS Ale 540 / 660 EMU trains

Le automotrici elettriche Ale 660 vennero ordinate successivamente alle ale 840 per integrare un servizio di qualità superiore: l'ambiente viaggiatori era diviso in un ambiente di prima classe ed uno di seconda, per un totale di 66 posti a sedere.
Rispetto alla 840, la Ale 660 venne progettata con i vestiboli di accesso non più paracentrali ma esterni, posizionati in asse sopra al carrello. La forma dei fianchi della cassa era leggermente bombata, i finestrini dei comparti erano di dimensioni maggiori. I carrelli erano del tipo H1040, di nuova concezione. Il portellone frontale è a finestrino singolo, al contrario di quello su ale 840 che presenta due piccoli finestrini.
Contestualmente alla Ale 660, vennero ordinati anche dei rimorchi di sola seconda classe (Le 800).

Nel 1956 la terza classe venne eliminata e, l'iniziale ordine di ale 660, ricevette delle modifiche a livello di servizio offerto: l'ambiente viaggiatori divenne unico, con servizio esclusivo di prima classe per un totale di 54 posti a sedere. Nacque la Ale 540 di prima generazione.
Successivamente, con l'ordine delle Ale 540 di seconda generazione, l'ambiente interno ricevette delle modifiche e la ritirata venne spostata nei comparti esterni della cassa. Contestualmente a queste elettromotrici, vennero ordinate anche delle rimorchiate di sola seconda classe con 76 posti a sedere (Le 760).
L'evoluzione finale della Ale 540 è rappresentato dall'ordine di terza serie, sostanzialmente identico a quello di seconda generazione ma con cabine di nuova concezione (non più aerodinamiche come le predecessori ma con una linea al passo coi tempi).
Il progetto "Ale 540" nacque, purtroppo, troppo tardi rispetto ai tempi, scalzato solo pochi anni dopo dalla più moderna Ale 601, in grado di garantire un servizio di qualità superiore ed a velocità maggiori.

I rimorchi Le 640 nascono da una conversione del rimorchio Ln 664 (Aln 668 di prima generazione) al fine di renderlo atto al servizio con le automotrici elettriche di prima generazione. Tali rimorchi vennero dotati, inoltre, di opportuna carenatura al fine di mantenere la stessa linea estetica delle elettromotrici cui vennero accoppiati.
La prima versione di tale rimorchio era sostanzialmente una carrozza semipilota, stesso numero di posti a sedere (64). Contestualmente a tale tipo di carrozza, venne ordinata la realizzazione di un rimorchio privo di cabine di guida, con l'intento di usarlo come intercalato. I posti a sedere vennero innalzati a 68 (Le 680).
Successivamente, causa installazione delle apparecchiature di ripetizione segnali in macchina, uno dei due vetri frontali della cabina venne eliminato. Le Le640 di questo tipo vennero soprannominate "guerce" e persero 2 posti a sedere.
A partire dal 1987, le carenature laterali vennero rimosse su molte unità.

The Ale 660 electric railcars were ordered after the ale 840 to integrate a superior quality service: the travelers' environment was divided into a first-class environment and a second-class one, for a total of 66 seats.
Compared to the 840, the Ale 660 was designed with the access vestibules no longer paracentral but external, positioned in axis above the trolley. The shape of the sides of the case was slightly rounded, the windows of the compartments were larger. The bogies were the type H1040, of new conception. The front door has a single window, altough ale 840 has two small windows.
At the same time, second class coaches (Le 800) were also ordered.

In 1956 the third class was eliminated and, the initial order of ale 660, received changes in the level of service offered: the passenger environment became unique, with exclusive first class service for a total of 54 seats. The first generation Ale 540 was born.
Subsequently, with the order of the second generation, the internal environment received changes and the WC was moved to the external compartments of the train. At the same time, trailers of second class only with 76 seats (Le 760) were also ordered.
The final evolution of the Ale 540 is represented by the third series order, substantially identical to that of the second generation but with new concept cabs (no longer aerodynamic like the predecessors but with a line in step with the times).
Unfortunately, the "Ale 540" project was born too late compared to the times, undermined only a few years later by the more modern Ale 601, able to guarantee a higher quality service and at higher speeds.

The Le 640 trailers are the result of a conversion of the Ln 664 trailer (Aln 668 of the first generation) in order to make it suitable for service with the first generation electric railcars. These waggons were also equipped with an appropriate skirt frame in order to maintain the same aesthetic line as the ALe to which they were coupled.
The first version of this trailer was basically a semi-pilot carriage, same number of seats (64). At the same time, the construction of a trailer without driver's cabs was ordered, with the intention of using it as an interlayer. Seats were raised to 68 (Le 680).
Subsequently, due to the installation of the signal repetition equipment in the car, one of the two front windows of the cabin was eliminated. Le 640 of this type were nicknamed "guerce" (blind-by-one-eye) and lost 2 seats.
Starting in 1987, the side skirts were removed on many units.
