Multiplayer in 2021

Simple guide to setting up multiplayer for Grand Theft Auto IV, in 2021

Overview

Currently, there are only 2 ways to get (good) multiplayer for GTA IV
These are GTA Connected, and CitizenIV.
There's also still the Games For Windows Live option, but it's not that great as it's pretty buggy.

Downgrading

Downgrading is essential to play multiplayer, so follow the guide below before continuing

GTA Connected

So far the best way to play multiplayer, is to use GTA Connected.

GTA Connected is a third party modification, used for many games such as GTA VC, III, even SA, but we'll use it for GTA IV. It's also a good replacement for GFWL as GFWL has many major issues, such as the kick bug...also it requires a serial key!

Download the link above (get the client,) the file can also be found in the downgrade file.

Install it - preferably to the default location to avoid issues - once done, run GTA Connected.
Change the game at the top to Grand Theft Auto IV, then set your name up in Tools>Launcher Settings, then set your EXE path in Tools>Game Settings to GTAIV.exe in your game's main directory.

Now you can join a server. I prefer Jack - Rockstar Gamemodes (IV) the most, as it is the most reminiscent of the original game's design.

When in-game, you can join a lobby by opening your phone>Multiplayer>Custom Match (or Create Match, if you wanna create a lobby.)

• As of right now, ENBs are not compatible with GTA Connected, it will lead to your screen being black, or just not working at all

CitizenIV

CitizenIV is another third party modification, used for only GTA IV this time! I've barely used this one, but I've heard many good things.

Download the link above. It's commonly triggered as a virus, but I can confirm, it's not! Just put an anti-virus exclusion on it.

Open the file, put the exe into an EMPTY folder, then run it. Select your GTA IV location, then it may gave you a game cache prompt, just click yes to it. Once done, it should boot right on up.
Set your name in the Settings tab, then you can join a server.

You can also open the GTA Connected launcher along with the Steam overlay by typing the command in the launch options:

It takes like 2 seconds to install GTA Connected and less than 5 for the rest (downgrade, zpatch, zmenu).

Seems to be a quiet night but it fluctuates. I saw 12 on my freeroam server earlier.

Obviously we don't have huge numbers like FiveM and I doubt we ever will. GTA IV is popular but not as much as GTA V, and GTAC is still working on things.

Once the new sync and server elements update comes out, scriptable gamemodes will be much easier to make (and there's a roleplay server ready to go for the update too)
