Sol Invictus

Descripción
This mod is set in 2197 AUC (aka 1444 AD) which attempts to answer the question of “What if Julian II of Rome reformed paganism and challenged the spread of Christianity in the late 4th century”. I tried to make this alternate history scenario as realistic as possible but I also added things which I wanted to see or were necessary for the scenario to play out, so this scenario may not be the most realistic one to answer the former question. This mod uses a CK2 conversion as the base for the mod, while I added national ideas for some nations and utilized the lost cultures that are not seen in the base EU4. I also modified the Hellenic Pagan Faith to become the new Sol Invictus faith which utilizes the deity system from Norse paganism and Hinduism. Due to a lack of time and experience with modding, this particular version is somewhat basic however I would love to one day make it a full conversion mod with heresies, mission trees, and other features while I would not be opposed if anyone else would want to work on this scenario as well, either with me or solo.

Basic Lore:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Prior to 1444 AD:
In our Timeline Julian II died in his campaign against Persia, however here that is not so. Julian II defies death and achieves his goal to conquer Persia, taking Mesopotamia and establishing a Pro-Roman King on the Persian throne. With this victory, Julian II returns to Rome with the popularity of both the army and the Roman people allowing him to pursue his ambitions to rebuild the pagan glory of Rome. Simply reforming Paganism was not enough so he used the growing cult which had challenged Christianity previously (Mithraism/Sol Invictus), the faith which his Uncle Constantine had once followed, along with his own Neo-Platonic Philosophy to make a faith to challenge the growing Christian Church. He would center the faith around the sun god Sol who was the sole (get it a Pun!) most important deity however this did not mean the rejection of the older pagan faiths of the Roman world but simply meant their acknowledgement as sub gods to Sol and eventually becoming Sol’s children in the Cosmology of his faith. Julian would finally separate the Collegium Pontificum from the secular government of Rome allowing it to form its own hierarchal structure not only to emulate the success of the Christian church but to also prevent a Christian emperor from subverting the old gods ever again. With the Financial support of the Roman Government and the more structured pagan church, Christianity began declining in the Empire without the need for violent persecution, forcing Christians to migrate to the eastern world where it was more accepting turning it to a more eastern religion. Julian's Sol faith would spread across the Roman world replacing Christianity as the dominant Western Religion. Julian would die around 401 AD leaving the empire to his chosen successor based upon merit like the Five good Emperors of Rome had once done, leaving the empire in a much stronger state than it was in our timeline. The next Great figure of Roman history would come when a Macedonian General in the Roman legions would take the throne in the late 6th century known as Alexander Aetos, who claimed to be descended from the last Antigonid king of Macedon. He would marry into a noble family who was descended from Julian II and with his powerful genetic legacy he would, with his newfound prestige, unify the Greek and Roman people in the Empire. His dynasty proved highly resilient to the many centuries that have passed where they still rule the Roman world by 1444 AD.

1444 AD:
The Roman Empire is facing a crisis as an Aetos family conflict splits the empire apart, where the younger brother of Imperator Eugenius Aetos, Junius Aetos, sought to take over the throne of Rome through his control over Egypt. He failed to take Rome but in peace he did succeed in giving Egypt independence under his rule, declaring himself Pharaoh of Egypt. In the Roman Civil war, the client state of Rome, new Carthage, supported the Egyptians for their own independence which they achieved leaving Rome ever weaker. With the military failure of Eugenius, the Duke of Italy has taken more power for himself in defiance of Rome and may be ambitious enough to declare independence from Rome altogether. Will Rome survive the Crisis of the 15th century and continue its streak as the longest-lived nation in history or will it collapse against its growing adversaries. In Western Europe, there is constant conflict as Britannia seeks to control all of the British Isles, Gallia attempts to defeat Aquitaine for complete control of Gaul, and the Franks try to consolidate their power for mastery of Germania. The Muslim world is recovering from its defeats from the Holy Wars declared by the Collegium Pontificum three centuries prior, however Andalusia remains the strongest Muslim power challenging its Visigoth and Roman Rivals for the exploration of the Atlantic Ocean. The Arabic Empire stands as the master of Arabia, however will it seek its former glory by retaking the Levant and Egypt or will it move south instead? In the Middle East, Babylonia has become a powerful nation emphasizing both martial and scientific prowess, and due to its former status as a province of Rome has close ties with Rome especially when it is surrounded by the resurgent Persian Empire in the North and the Arab empire in the South. In the East, the Mongol empire is splitting ever further with many of its western factions adopting the Zoroastrian faith and even spreading it into the Slavic world. A revival of the Tang empire is challenging the declining Mongol state and giving it a great pedestal to challenge the famed Roman Empire of west in the exploration of the new world. In the Slavic world, the Rus stand as the strongest state however they also act as the sole buffer against the ever-growing tide of the Zoroastrian influenced steppe peoples. In the Norse world, Sweden and Norway reign as the strongest powers, where Norwegian settlers have even set up a small colony in the new world, giving it an edge over its Hellenic southern neighbors. Jorvik, Denmark and Saxony are in constant conflict with the Neo-Hellenistic world as their constant defiance to Sol’s missionaries increases hostility. While finally in the world between Empires, Armenia and Georgia stand proudly as the strongest of few Christian nations in the world but are still primarily protected due to their status as buffers between Rome and Persia. Israel is suffering from a Christian rebellion, with now the new hungry Jaws of Egypt to its south, its rival Palmyra to its north, and the possibility of Arabic expansion, Israel stands in need of support so that her people may never again have to flea the promise land. What nation will you choose to guide in the uncertain future? Will you guide them to conquering the new world or will you lead them to the ashbin of history.

Notes:
I take no credit for any unique flags seen in the mod, they all come from either the EU4 base game, CK2 base game, EU4 mods, or CK2 mods.
The Sassanian national ideas are actually from the Extended timeline, I liked them so I kept them un-altered.
The Graphics mod I am using in the Pictures is called “Graphical Map Improvements” by Isaiah.
If anyone wants a version of this mod with the Aztec Invasion dlc activated just ask.

Alright so as of right now the mod does not allow an initializing of the game after the recent update to EU4 and I am not entirely sure what is causing it, so until I can figure it out or if someone can maybe help pinpoint it for me, it may take some time to get an update out for this.

Alright ImNotGoodAtMakingNames, I believe I fixed the issue by removing the institution file from the mod, not sure why it was happening but let me know if you still encounter it if you are still playing it.

I will have to look into that since I have yet to encounter that issue. I will try to get an update out as soon as possible but it may be a bit due to school.
