Introduction : Basics On Getting Started On A New Server

This guide should help you improve your own gaming experience. I'm going to give you tips on the biggest aspects of Rust. By using headings I will take you through the topics and give tips and tricks you can use to improve your own game.

Servers
There are 3 types of servers in Rust; official, community and modded.

Official Servers are mainly ran by Facepunch themselves and therefore tend to be more popular and have alot of players playing at one time. However, it also makes them more susceptible to having cheaters and alot of fighting

Community Servers are hosted by players who have paid to have a server and tend to be friendlier and have more active admins. This is where I recommend you start to learn the game

Modded Servers are also player hosted but have extra things added to them to change up the game. For instance, they may have 2X gather rate or more (You get twice the amount of resource when collecting materials) This can be good if you do not play often. However, it is not playing the game in it's true form and can sometimes be too easy and consequently less fun

If this is your first time playing Rust you will find it much easier to start on a community server with little to no people on

After you load the server which will take about a minute, you'll spawn randomly into the world, naked. Press any key to wake up. This will happen every time you login to a server.

Basic functions to know:
  • Press Tab to open inventory amd quick craft
  • Press E to interact with most objects exmaple picking up items, or open/close doors
  • Press Shift to run while using movement controls of WASD
  • WASD Movement Controls
  • Ctrl to crouch
  • G - Opens Map
  • H - Quick Loot (Hover over objects while holding to loot)
  • V - Voice Chat
  • Alt - Looks around
  • Q - Crafting menu
In your inventory will be a rock and a torch. The rock is for gathering resources and the torch is for light.

Farming
Using the rock you spawn with you can farm trees and nodes for resources. While some objects may appear to be stone they may not be farmable. Stone nodes look like this and metal and sulfur nodes have the same shape but different colouration. When hitting the node aim for the glowing spark, this will allow you to farm it faster. The same goes for trees but instead of a spark it has a red cross. The amount of resources you gather depends on the tier of tool you have. Rock has the lowest gather rate, then stone tools, metal tool and then salvaged tools. Stone tools can be crafted using stone and wood whereas the tiers above it must be found in crates and researched to craft. Tip* the snow is the most plentiful for nodes and is a favoured farming location for most players.

Resources :
Hemp (Plants that look like weed)
An important material for bandages, clothes, and many other items. First you want to be looking for hemp. They are found in grassy areas and can be picked up by looking at it and pressing the interact button: E. It will give you cloth and hemp seeds (which you can plant).
Wood (Trees)
Used for fuel, basic building material, tools, weapons, and crafting. To gather wood, go up to a tree with a tool(rock) and hold down mouse1(left click). It will disappear when you reach the maximum amount of wood you can get from it.
Stone Ore / Metal Ore / High Quality Ore/Sulfur Ore (Mining Nodes)
Used for tools and a stronger building material. You will have to locate special looking rock nodes (shown below). They are found throughout the map and inside caves. To gather stone, do the same process to gather wood. It will slowly disappear in chunks until all the resources are collected. Also ores are collected from rock nodes such as metal ore, sulfur ore, and high quality metal ore.

Food (Meat,Berries Etc)
Most likely will increase your health, thirst, and hunger levels when eaten. Most common food plants found in the wild are mushrooms, pumpkins, and corn. Pumpkins and corn will give you seeds which can be planted. Pickup up food plants by pressing E.
Barrels

Barrels are randomly found throughout the map in flat terrain and monuments. They will drop various types of loot which are used for crafting. Break open barrels with tools.
NPCS :
Scientists
Shop Vendors

Tools
Tools are used to gather resources. More expensive ones will cost more to craft and gather more resources per hit. The basic gathering tool is the rock. Some melee weapons can be used to gather resources.

Wood
Hatchets/axes are the primary tool for gathering wood. Using other types of tools are less efficient. The order of worst to best wood-gathering tools are: rock, stone hatchet, hatchet, salvaged axe.

Stone/Ore
Pickaxes are the primary tool for gathering wood. Using other types of tools are less efficient. The order of worst to best stone-gathering tools are: rock, stone pick axe, pick axe, salvaged icepick.

Waking Up And Defending Yourself
When you load into your chosen server you will spawn on a beach with nothing but two items, your Rock and your Torch.

Your Rock is your best friend when you first spawn, it will allow you to gather resources and bash heads in

The map is arranged in coordinate like grids to make it easier to find your friends and is accessed by pressing G (by default).

By holding and dragging the Right Mouse Button you can move around on the map.

By Holding Right Mouse Button and Scrolling you can zoom in and out

During this process you want to be able to defend yourself from other players as normally alot will spawn around you looking to kill you for a laugh with a rock.

Getting something to defend yourself then you are going to want to craft the first basic weapon above the rock - a wooden spear. You will need 300 Wood.

The crafting menu is accessed by pressing Q (by default)

The quick crafting menu is found on the right side of your inventory that is accessed by pressing Tab (by default)

To get your first Wooden Spear you will need to locate a tree and bash it with your Rock to get wood

After your first hit of the tree a small red X will appear on it. If you hit this X and the others that will appear, the tree will be harvested faster.

Once you begin crafting your first spear it will take 30 seconds to appear in your inventory

Good Items To Craft Early Game
After gathering a bit of wood, stone, and cloth, I recommend crafting the following items:

Bandages
Cheap way to heal yourself, will stop bleeding from attacks, slightly increase health Cost to craft: 4 cloth.
Stone Hatchet
Faster way to harvest more wood.

Stone Pickaxe
Faster way to harvest stone/ore

Sleeping Bag
Basically a respawn point when you die, hide in bushes or house since they can be destroyed by other players

Hunting Bow
Very good weapon for starting long range weapon

Wooden Arrows
Ammo for your bow, slower but more damage than high-velocity arrows you get (2 arrows) per craft.

Building Plan
Used to create buildings/houses
Hammer
Used to upgrade and repair foundations , placement items and vehicles.
Animals
There are many animals in Rust. Animals can be hunted, killed and looted by players. They spawn in various rates over different biomes (areas), and can be found most often in wooded areas.

Most animals provide a corresponding food item, as well as a corresponding skull, some Cloth, Leather, Bone Fragments, and Animal Fat. Which can be used for Low Grade , Cloth / Leather Armour.
BEAR

BOAR

CHICKEN

HORSE

WOLF

Surviving
In order to survive you must watch out for the following

Cold/Freezing/Wet
  • Avoid snowy areas since they can cause the too cold status to appear. (Unless you have suitable gear)

  • Avoid wading through deep water which also causes the too cold status.

  • The too cold status appears below 5° Celsius and will cause you to lose health over time.

  • You become cold at night.

  • Craft and light a campfire to stay warm.

Hunger
  • Eat plant foods to reduce hunger.

  • You can kill animals/players and harvest them for food. Cook all raw meats in a campfire before eating. Eating human meat will greatly reduce thirst so avoid eating that.

Thirst
  • Drink water from bottles/rivers/streams or eat food to reduce thirst.

  • Drink water from rivers/streams by looking at the water. A drink water icon should pop up. Press E to drink water.

  • Drinking salt water from oceans will hurt you.

Players
  • Some players kill on sight (KoS) not everyone is your friend.

  • Some players might deceive , they may be all nice when helping for manys of hours then they backstab you

Avoid
  • Avoid other players except friends if you don't have a weapon.

  • Avoid players with clothes/armor as they most likely have higher tier guns/weapons.

  • Harvesting resources, running, walking, guns all make sounds which can be heard by players.

  • When you have loot , avoid monuments as they attract players for their loot, visit them after gaining weapons/armour.

  • Many monuments give off radiation and give you radiation poisoning when you approach them. (Wear right gear ) / Hazmat suit.

The Recycler
The Recycler will grind down metallic components in return for scrap, metal fragments and high quality metal. Cloth based components such as rope, tarp and sewing kits will return for cloth - This is a very good source of cloth if you have chosen to live in the desert where no hemp bushes naturally grow!

Recycling is the best way to get scrap!
Here are some scrap values for recycling components - tech trash comes from recycling CCTV cameras and laptops, it is also looted from military crates
http://rust.wikia.com/wiki/Scrap
Food & Water (Hunger & Hydration)
Try to kill a Boar, Deer, Wolf or Bear with your Hunting Bow and farm it with your Stone Hatchet.

If you look in your inventory you can see you got some Raw Chicken, Pork, Wolf or Bear meat and Cloth or Leather.

One of the most important things is not to starve the first day so this is what you need to do next:
- Make a Camp fire (You can find this in "Tab" > "Crafting")

How to use the camp fire and cook the Meat?

Hold "E" and Open the camp fire.
Put in the "Raw Chicken Breast" and some Wood.

Then go out of this menu and tap "E" shortly and the camp fire will ignite.
Wait for a minute or so and open your camp fire.

You now will find "Cooked Meat".

Put this in your main bar and eat it!
In the right down corner you can see your health going up with every piece you eat

Getting Hydrated

Water can be found via :
  • Cactus (Found at Desert Areas)
  • Water Bottles ( found in Gas station , Food loot boxs at barrels)
  • Water Cans ( found in Gas station , Food loot boxs at barrels)
  • Water Catcher
  • Boiled Water ( Sea Water to Fresh water)
  • River ( Found on Map)
Get Tools And Start A Base, Get Weapons Later
After spawning into a server, you're faced with a choice-- tools or weapons? Make a base or to PVP

Base
Since some servers will actively have often pvp and kill on site the best thing to get is cover/shelter, and somewhere to put your loot findings, and a good idea to place your sleeping bag for a spawning at your base. Majority of the game comes with building bases, and then killing players, killing animals, and farming mining nodes/wood/components ,Similar to escape from Tarkov, when you die to another player in rust you lose all of the loot you have on you. To prevent this from happening you need to build a base to store the loot you discover while roaming the map. You then question where to build your base want to have a base that is left alone? Build in the snow! Deserts are great for nodes, which are essential to the game, and forests are full of trees, cloth, and mushrooms. Decide what you want out of your base and run with it! They do come with risks, though-- you need more cloth for clothing in the snow, deserts can get hot during the day, and forests are full of hiding places for your enemies to hold against you. Ensure you have some resources and the craft a building plan (blue paper) and a hammer. Using the building plan you can right click to change the structure you are building and left click to place your selected structure in twig. Many new players build the entirety of their base out of twig and forget to upgrade to wood or stone. This is a big problem as other players can easily break twig and gain access to your base. Use your hammer and upgrade the base with the materials that you have, make sure that you leave a doorway so you can enter and leave when you please. When placing a door, make sure it forms a airlock (an easy to build prevention method to prevent players from killing you while leaving and going into your base.)

So to speed up the process it is guaranteed to be sure to make tools a priority.

Rust Build Videos
Looking to build the compound of your dreams? YouTube content creators pore tirelessly over their builds, which are constantly updated as new updates for the game come out. A new, crafty base build can be the difference between an easily raided base and a compound that is virtually un-raidable!
Building Base
After gaining many resources, you're going to have to build a house/base to store your items in. Keep this in mind: other players will attempt to raid your base and no base can be 100% raid-proof. Make your base well built and this will keep other players out.

Building Plan

You can start building with a building plan. Pick a large, flat area for building. Never pick an area with an incline or obstacles in the way. Have the building plan in your hand. There will be a blue silhouette of what you're about to build. Left click to place it down, left click and hold to select a different type of building object.
Hammer

A tool used to upgrade, repair, and rotate building objects. It can be used to upgrade a structure's tier from twig to wood to stone to sheet metal to armored. They can be upgraded by looking at a structure and holding down the right mouse button. Stone is a good tier to upgrade to. Images below of a hammer and wall tiers in order.

Building Info

Foundations are the support of your base. If destroyed, anything attached above it will be destroyed. Upgrade them to the highest tier you can. They also decay over time and must occasionally be repaired with a hammer.

Never place windows as they are easy to go through.

Important: Always craft and place a tool cupboard which prevents anyone else from building on your base.

Always place a ceiling(floor) on top of base.

Walls will keep intruders out. Walls have a soft side which able it to be destroyed easier on that side. When building keep the soft side facing towards the inside of the building. They are marked by an X on a twig wall. Rotate them with the hammer (Below: Left: soft side, Right: hard side).

Doors

Doors are placed inside of a door frame. There are 3 tiers for doors. Wooden, sheet metal, and armored. Sheet metal are the most used doors. Beware as the wooden door can easily be broken with tools. Always place a lock or code lock onto your door. Code locks are recommended as you can lose the key or have it be stolen, giving players access to your base.
Tools
Tools are used to gather resources. More expensive ones will cost more to craft which will require a workbench and blueprints in future and but these will gather more resources per hit. The basic gathering tool is the rock. Some melee weapons can be used to gather resources e.g (Bone Knife , Salvaged Hammer)

Tools like the Stone Hatchet, which takes 200 wood and 100 stone to create, or around ten hits to a rock node and twenty to a tree, can speed up your progress on getting a base, weapons, and tools exponentially.

Guns
Guns in rust are your guide to success. They give you a huge advantage over other primitive players and allow you to snowball and get more loot.

Unlike COD or GTA where recoil is non existent, recoil in rust is a major factor and can take players hundreds of hours to master. Guns like the ak and the mp5 have tricky recoil patterns that make them hard to use for newer players.

If you would like to get better at these guns you can practice on aim train servers such as UKN or Combattags. If you don't want to make that sort of commitment, try sticking with pistols, shotguns or semi automatic guns that have relatively straight forward recoil patterns. All guns apart from the eoka (an unreliable shotgun) must be found and researched before you can craft them yourself. They can be found by running monuments, killing other players or using the tech tree.
Locations of Setting Up A Base
Firstly you need to understand that the map is made up of 3 tiers, these 3 tiers contain different levels of loot and consequently different monuments. Whilst being split into tiers the map is also made of 3 different biomes that each have advantages and disadvantages to when living in them.

Tier 0 is the part of the map in which players who have just spawned/respawned will be placed most commonly on the beaches of the area as well as the Tier 0 monuments, which include: Gas station, Abadoned Supermarket, Mining outpost, small harbour, satellite dish and lighthouse. These give basic loot crates (Brown crates, Food crates, the boonie box) and if you are lucky, you might find a military crate.

Tier 1 contains monuments such as train yard, water treatment plant, junkyard, sewer branch and the dome. These generally contain medium tier loot including a higher chance of military crates and overall more boxes for you to loot. Most of them also have puzzle rooms, which require you to do the monument puzzles that were addressed earlier in this guide.

The tier 2 part of the map contains the monuments Military tunnels and Launch site which are the only monuments which possess Elite crates and use red cards in their puzzles. Power plant is also a tier 2 but does not give Elite Crates. Elite crates give the top tier loot for you to use in game including rockets, armoured door and much more.

Types of Land
Grassland Plains
Grassland plains or the green land. This place normally has a lot of everything including naturally occurring hemp and has a temperature In which you won’t take damage in at all times of the day. On a lot of maps the green land is the tier 0 area and a small patch occurs in the far corner of the tier 2 area. No real downsides to it apart from its probably the most common place to find people building their bases who more than likely won’t be as friendly as you would hope.

Snow
Secondly, we have the snow the biome in which it is quite cold during the day and gets to extreme temperatures at night in which you take can take large amounts of damage. Also, hemp does not naturally occur here so cloth could easily end up a problem for you. This is normally a less populated region due to the cold so less chance of finding yourself based next to a clan base.

Desert
desert has extreme heat in the day and cold temperatures at night. Quite often a great place to farm for sulfur but also many clans seem to set up camp in these areas. Cloth is once again a problem however in desperate times cacti can provide small amounts of cloth as well as some food in the form of cactus flesh. The open landscapes, which are associated with the desert, allow for little cover but large flat areas for large-scale bases to be built.

Notes
It is advised that you do not go swimming in the cold (ESPECIALLY AT NIGHT) or in the desert whilst its night without a hazmat or a wetsuit. Cold temperatures + being wet will make you very cold and you will lose health fast!

A common mistake is to build in areas right next to large monuments, which can often lead to constant door campers, and encounters with groups which will be able to easily overrun a solo player. When the ‘perfect place’ to live is not an option due to other players already taking over the landscapes so sometimes the best option may be to base in a quiet place with access to the water to allow for easy boat access to travel to the vast amounts of resources available in other areas of the map.
Safezones
These are areas in which players can interact without the threat of others wielding weapons as players are not allowed weapons out for more than 5 seconds in these ‘safe zones’ or else the bandits/scientists will see you as a threat and proceed to kill them. Also, any players which have been in combat recently are still considered a threat until a period of time has passed to prevent players abusing safe zones to escape fights which they initiated/took part in. However, while they are ‘safe zone’ monuments with the 5 seconds players are allowed to wield a weapon in players may attempt to kill you, to counteract this Facepunch has made it so that as long as you are inside the designated ‘safe zone’ shown in the bottom right of your screen players can’t loot other players bodies. Inside the bandit camp however players can loot you if you are not in the gambling room but if players attack you the guards will still respond.

Both variations of safezone also house many shops that you can purchase a number of items from. The outpost mainly offers resource deals, deployables and clothing whilst the bandit camp mainly offers advanced weapons and grenades - These are the main items for sale however there are others too. Nearly all purchases from these shops cost scrap
Getting Your First Base down
Once you are happy with the resource you have collected it is time to get a base down

This looks like a nice spot !

When building your base you want to keep in mind whats around you. You want to know where the nearest source of trees is, nodes, your closest monument / rad town and where your neighbours live

These are the 3 most important items when it comes to building your base:
  • The building plan -allows you to place walls, foundations etc using wood
  • The hammer -allows you to upgrade, demolish and rotate building blocks
  • The tool cupboard -stops your base from decaying (breaking over time) and stops other players building in your area; you want to keep this safe!!

First of all take out your building plan, hold right click and select foundation

Start small! In this example I am making a 2x2 footprint

Select and place:
Walls
Ceilings (floors)
Doorway

Before you upgrade make sure all the walls of your base are the correct way round.
There is a soft side and a hard side

This is the soft side, keep this side facing the INSIDE of your base

If the softside faces outwards then your base can easily be breached by using nothing but melee weapons.

Now take your Hammer and upgrade everything by holding right click and selecting a material.
In this example I will be upgrading my base to stone - you will want the entire of your base stone by the time you log off or you can easily be flame raided by other players

Your base will now look something similar to this

Make sure you upgrade everything!

Place a wooden door (or sheetmetal if you can afford it!) in your doorway and lock it with a lock
You can either lock it using a key lock or a code lock. Key locks are best for solo players as they are cheap and only 1 person can access the door without a key. The owner of the key lock will always be able to open the door.
Codelocks are essential for groups as they will all be able to access the door, this lock however is more expensive at 100 cooked metal frags per

Once your base is secured place your Tool cupboard in the corner (commonly abbreviated to TC by players) and authorise. Now you are the only player that can build in your area unless another player authorises to your TC.
You will now see that when you are in your TC privilege (that is emitted by your bases foundations) that it will display "Building Privilege" in the bottom right of your screen

Codelocks are essential for groups as they will all be able to access the door, this lock however is more expensive at 100 cooked metal frags per

You will now see that when you are in your TC privilege (that is emitted by your bases foundations) that it will display "Building Privilege" in the bottom right of your screen

You will also see that you are told your base is decaying. You will need to place the resource of your base inside the TC to stop is decaying. (You can also place any resource in your TC just for storage as shown) You are now told how long your base has before it starts to decay in the bottom right (displayed as "Upkeep time")

Currently you only have 1 door, you should build an airlock. Use a triangle foundation and a doorway to create this

Follow these steps and this will be helpful to start any base.

Melee Weapons
Ranged Weapons
Crafting
Using the scrap and other resources you have gathered you can craft a work bench.

These workbenches are used to craft more exclusive items that must be researched in order for you to craft. There are 3 levels of workbenches, level 1, level 2 and level 3. The higher the workbench tier the more it costs to craft.

In order to get blueprints to craft items, you must first find the item either by killing other players or looting monuments and then place the item into a research table with its required amount of scrap. Depending on the server different blueprints may already be unlocked for you.
Research Table
By now you have a base up and some basic materials, but you may ask the question "How do I upgrade from my bow?"

To craft better items you need to first find it in a crate alongside a road or monument and then research it using a research bench and scrap (found in crates and barrels). To craft it you will need the right amount of materials and the corresponding workbench for the item

You then drag the item you want to learn into the component to create section. and add the required scrap needed to start making the blueprint

To craft at a research bench you simply need to be standing near it - it will display in the bottom right of your screen when you are in workbench range. When crafting a lower tier item compared to the level of workbench you have the item will be crafted quicker - For example, crafting arrows at a level 3 workbench is faster than doing it without a workbench

The level 1 workbench is very easy to break and only takes a few tools. This means you can save space and easily replace it with a level 2 in the exact same spot.
The same cannot be said however about the level 2 and level 3, to break these you are best of breaking the foundation under it

Some items you do not need to find and research as they are default blueprints, these include the crossbow and nailgun. These weapons are deadly at early game and will help you when scavenging for gear when used correctly. They do however require the level 1 workbench to craft them
Constantly Upgrade
Keep raiders out and your friends safely inside with an upgraded base. Tiers of your wall or door, like stone, which you can reinforce with stone, sheet metal, which requires metal fragments, and armored, which you can get with metal fragments and high-quality metal, are all harder to raid than wood or twig are. Although these can be expensive in the early stages of a wipe, they are often worth it in the long haul, as they offer more protection of you and your loot!
Blueprints First, Components Later
If you've just started on a server, you'll need blueprints-- which can be found using research table and scrap, which you can find by recycling components. Blueprints are essential for creating tools and weapons-- without the blueprint for a gun, you can't make it using the resources that you have! In later wipes, (or later in the wipe,) you can keep components, but initially, prioritize blueprints as much as possible.
Important Components
A major element of rust is the need to research items and craft them using components. Components can be found in barrels and crates along the road.Or in rad towns located around the map (Most rad towns require you to have clothing to enter.)

The components you gather can be recycled into scrap, metal, high quality metal and cloth using recyclers found at the majority of rad towns.

Components, which are a staple of the game, are used to make everything from armor to tools to decorative elements for your base! You can find them in crates, at monuments, and in barrels along the road. The most useful items that you can find are springs, gears, and rifle bodies, which you can use to make guns
.
Understanding Monuments
Monuments are locations spawned around the map. They come in tiers 1-3, with one being the lowest tier and three being the highest. In lower tiers, you’ll find common loot—barrels, tan crates, and the like. In higher tier monuments you have a higher chance to find rarer and more sought after materials in the same barrels and crates. When first spawning in, you’ll spawn around tier 1 monuments and, depending where you go to on the map, will determine your access to the resources found in these monuments.

Radiations for Monuments

Monuments with No Radiation

These monuments are available when you have 0 radiation protection (none).

  • Abandoned Cabins
  • Cargo ship
  • Dome (Outside)
  • Harbor
  • Junkyard
  • Lighthouse
  • Mining Outpost
  • Quarry (Any type)

You may enter these monuments with absolutely nothing.

Monuments with Low Radiation

These monuments are available when you have 10 radiation protection (low).

  • Dome (Inside)
  • Satellite Dish Array
  • Sewer Branch

You may enter these monuments with a full set of burlap (Headwrap, shirt, trousers, shoes and gloves). This set is the cheapest low level of radiation protection.

Monuments with Medium Radiation

These monuments are available when you have 20 radiation protection (medium).

  • Airfield
  • Train yard
  • Water Treatment Plant

You may enter these monuments with a full set of burlap, wooden armor and a bandana (Wood helmet, bandana, burlap shirt, wooden chestplate, burlap trousers, wooden armor pants, burlap shoes and gloves). This set is the cheapest medium level of radiation protection. This isn't the best set but it is crafteable and the most accessible. You may take a single snow jacket for the same protection.

Monuments with High Radiation

These monuments are available when you have high radiation protection. You may enter these monuments with a radiation suit or a combination of 30 radiation protection. A snow jacket along with other gear is necessary if you do not have a radiation suit.

  • Launch Site
  • Military Tunnels
  • Power Plant

Extreme Levels of Radiation

The Launch site main building will always cause a low additional amount of radiation. You should drink a lot of water to drink to remove this. Rad pills are less effective.

The cargo ship will also cause lethal levels of radiation once it leaves the map. After a warning horn you must leave the ship. You may take a diving gear if a boat is unavailable.

The Nuclear site will also cause high level of radiation inside one of the steam generators. (Round towers) Rad pills are commended to remove the high levels once you've exit the tower.

Keep Your Friends Close, and Monuments Closer
Being close to monuments are important for farming components and using the recycle at the monuments to get scrap (which you can use to research new items.) But be warned, having a base close to a monument means that more people will be out and about near your home, which can make it hard to farm in peace! Be sure to weigh the risks and rewards of basing near a monument before placing your base.

Patrol Helicopter
After wondering around Rust island I'd assume you have already heard the buzzing of a helicopter patrolling the island and possibly shooting at other players or at you

This helicopter periodically comes into the map every few hours and will shoot players if they have more than two pieces of clothing on (It doesn't matter what they are! A hazmat is ok) and / or if they have a gun on their hotbar (this includes shotguns and the crossbow but the bow is ok)

If the helicopter does become aggroed to you and you don't want it to be then the only way to get the helicopter off of you is to either die to it or be out of its sight for long enough

What happens if I shoot at the helicopter?

If you have an adequate window floor with metal embrasures and a door to hide behind when the helicopter rockets, you are able to destroy and loot the helicopter. To first get the helicopter aggroed to you you either need to, have the helicopter get close to you or hit it with a weapon. Sniper rifles such as the bolt action rifle (bolty) are best for this

Technically the helicopter can be taken down with any weapons but I would advise only using the Semi automatic rifle (SAR) or above. The AK is the most common weapon players will take down the helicopter with but if you get one from a previous helicopter, the m249 light machine gun is the best to use as of its high damage and 100 round capacity magazine. Players may also use the LR-300 to attack the helicopter with but I would not advise this as the LR has a lower durability than the AK and has a larger bullet drop (bullets will not go as far before losing velocity)

Once it is down
Once the helicopter has been taken down a marker will display on the map to show players where the heli has gone down so they can counter for the loot

he loot from the heli, as well as its carcass will be on fire for 5 - 10 minutes after it is destroyed. Once the loot boxes are no longer on fire you can loot them. Heres the loot table for the helicopter
https://rustlabs.com/entity/helicopter-crate

As you can see the helicopter can provide, C4, Rockets, M249 and much more so it is definitely worth taking
The 'dead' helicopter parts can be harvested using a pickaxe, this gives: Metal fragments, high quality metal and charcoal
Chinook
Another helicopter that periodically flies overhead Rust island is the chinook. This heli will drop a loot crate at a tier 1 (or higher) monument that needs to be hacked for 15 minutes before looting. The chinook will also shoot at players but it is far less accurate and painful compared to the Patrol Helicopter so you are not likely to take much damage if it does choose to shoot at you - it will not care what gear you have or what you are wearing

Once the crate has been dropped at a monument (Sometimes the chinook comes into the map and doesn't drop a crate) it will display a marker on the map of where it is has dropped the crate. Whilst flying overhead the chinook will also have its own map marker so you are able to track its movements and guess where the crate will drop

Once the crate has dropped a player will need to hold E on the codelock on the side to start the hacking process. This will take 15 minutes and a timer in the form of a laptop will display on top, shooting the laptop will slightly increase the time left until the crate is opened

This crate will normally be contested by many players so depending on the monument you will want a good camping spot if you choose to try and take the loot.
Here is the loot table for the Chinook crate. https://rustlabs.com/entity/hackable-crate
Cargo Ship
Once again the Cargo Ship is another event that periodically comes to Rust island. This one does not fly however, it circles the island on the waters

Similarly to the Chinook it too has its own map marker and when boxes are present on the ship they will display with it's marker

Also like the chinook, the Cargo Ship has hackable crates upon it, up to 4 can spawn on it on one occasion below and above deck. Military, brown and Elite boxes will also spawn on the ship to provide extra loot

This loot does not come for free however, players will have to board the ship using a boat - RHIB's work much better as of their speed. And whilst doing this have to also fend off hostile scientists that protect the Ship's contents

To board the boat players will need to press E on the conveniently placed ladders on either side of the boat. If you are protecting the boat from invaders you will want to watch these!

Once the cargo ship has done patrolling the map it will begin to leave. You will be alerted to when it is leaving by the deafening sounds of sirens, shortly after large amounts of radiation will swallow you up - at this point you will want to get off of the ship! Luckily there is an escape vehicle at the back of the ship - A RHIB

To release the boat from its storage you need to hop in the drivers seat and press the "release" button on the storage compartment

Loot Containers
Barrels
The Barrel - Not a crate but your main source of crafting components can be found when destroyed

  • The barrel includes various components that are used in crafting and drop 2 scrap per. The red barrel however is an oil barrel and will drop lowgrade and crude oil (which can be refined in an oil refinery to get lowgrade with 1 crude oil being refined into 3 lowgrade)
  • These are found in 'junkpiles' alongside roads and scattered around and in monuments

Small Old Wooden Box
These small crates are found at the mining outpost, abandoned supermarket and gas station and once looting will break and make alot of noise. They include small amounts of scrap and often a deployable item such as a rug and a small piece of clothing such as a boonie hat
Food Crate
These boxes are found scattered all over the map: around caves, alongside the roads, in monuments and found in abundance in the abandoned supermarket and gas station

Brown crate
  • These crates offer 5 scrap per and crafting components. If you are lucky this crate will provide you with a low tier weapon such as a revolver or other deployable item such as window bars. These crates also have the chance to hold an explosive such as bean can or satchel, these are very handy when it comes to raiding your neighbours base so you probably should loot every single one of these you come across.
  • Another variation of this crate will spawn in and around caves with the exact same model. This variation however will drop tools or a light for you to explore the cave with
Medical crate / food crate
This crate looks vey similar to the brown crate but has either a Medical Cross or Tupperware on the side to indicate that it is different
The medical crate will provide either a bandage, medical syringe or a large medical kit

The food box will offer water, pumpkins, berries and other food items. This crate is similar to the food crate but has better items

Both these crates are found dotted around some monuments

Red toolbox
This box is found alongside roads and offers 5 scrap along with a tool, ammo , piece of clothing and if lucky sometimes a weapon
Blue Tooltray
This box is found alongside roads in vehicles most often. it offers scrap along with a vehicle components,
Military Crate

This crate is much rarer than all others mentioned so far and is found in monuments

This crate typically offers much better loot compared to the common brown crate. There is a chance that you will find a good tier 2 weapon or deployable in this crate such as a Semi Pistol or Large furnace. In this crate you will always find scrap and a component
Elite Crate
This crate is the rarest in the game and is only found at the top of launch site and inside military tunnels where it is guarded by scientist NPC's
Sunken Chests
This crate can be found by diving in the sea where you can see a glass bottle floating on the ocean horizon which indicates for you where to dive down,
Airdrops
Some times you can hear a plane fly by.
This is a "Airdrop".
This airdrop will drop some loot.

As you can see it are some green boxes falling down from the sky.
In these boxes you can find some:
Military loot like guns, weapons, grenades or even C4.

You can go for these airdrops but watch out!!!
Other people will look for these airdrops as well and they probably will shoot on sight because these airdrops are rare.

Players called Airdrops
Players can also call in their own airdrops if they get their hands on a Supply Signal from looting a military crate.
Play with Friends or Make Friends
Rust is best played with friends! Rust is an intense game, and one that requires lots of time farming, playing, and building. Having friends to play with makes the game easier and more fun and allows you to get closer to your homies.

Want to 1 v 1 one of your friends to prove that you are better? Try getting into a combat tag server! You can battle it out in single arenas or compete on teams against other players. If you want to see more PvP in your Rust experience, you should check out combat tag servers!

Want to learn the best way to get better with weapons without losing them? Try Battlefield servers! You often spawn (and re-spawn as necessary) with a semi-automatic rifle, AK-47, Bolt-Action rifle, or any other gun in the game, which are all essential to learn to succeed at the game. Being able to use these weapons effectively can be a huge factor in your success from wipe to wipe.

Picking your base location can be challenging, especially when you also must account for your biggest threat or your closest ally-- your neighbor. When first starting on a Rust server, the fewer threats to you the better. If you can try making friends with your neighbors, then you’ll be better off.

Everyone in Rust can be quite psychotic—so try offering them resources they need to turn for protection for when you’re first starting off. If you try this strategy, just be mindful of how much they ask. If you’re lucky, you can persuade them for no cost: that is, if they’re friendly and understand the challenges it can be to be new to Rust. Just be wary, for betrayal comes from the ones closest to us.
Listen to Footsteps
Like in other survival games (and other games in general,) you can often hear enemies before you see them. Keep an ear out for animals, other players, and, on some modded servers, zombies! Knowing when they are coming can make a world of difference in your Rust experience. Different animals have different footsteps, which are even distinct from other players. Using these distinctions can give you an edge on the other players on the server!

Early Game Low-Grade
Early in the game, low-grade is important-- you need it to power boats, create furnaces, and power lamps and lanterns, if you plan on doing anything at night. You can get low-grade from animal fat and cloth, both of which you can farm from animals.

Farming animals is easy if you have a ranged weapon like a bow. Animals give you Animal fat which can be used with cloth to create Low grade fuel.

Low grade can also be found in mining helmets outside of mines and in red barrels marked with a hazard sign, which can be found along the road and at monuments.

Organise Inventory
Keeping your tools, food, and ammo on your hot-bar means that you can always see them and easily switch to your gun or hatchet as needed. Knowing how much ammo you have on you is very important, especially if you are away from your base for a long period of time. Running out of ammo in the middle of battle can be fatal!
Hidden Stashes
Hiding important guns, explosives, or similar loot? Make a stash! Stashes can be made from ten cloth and can be hidden underground. To find a stash after you've hidden it, look at the ground around where you’ve placed it. To help you remember exactly where you put your stash, take a screenshot of the location—you'll have a perfect record of where you hid it.

Rust Updates
With Rust being consistently being updated their may be difference to Gun Damage , Explosive Damage , Item building/crafting costs and possibly new added content,so the guide will need to be updated.

Please give time and patience for guide to be updated

And also thankyou once again
