introduction
this is a guide on how to exchange or trade items with other people online, giving items to others in exchange for other items, such as mosses, souls, humanity and any thing else you can drop. this guide is just something that was made for fun.
setting up
if you want to try this trading, first you should set up your inventory to be ready for any thing.

WEAPONS: for weapons you might want to take any weapons you want, but only two total, one in each hand. when you enter the world of another person you should keep you fist out, to look less threatening. only take out the weapons you have if someone attacks you (this will happen a lot if you enter a world with the red eye orb.)

ARMOR: use what ever armor you want, but do not use the armor of thorns, as walking too close to others will damage them and cause them to attack you. to really get into the trading character equip domhnall of zena's armor.

AMMUNITION: this really doesn't matter unless you are attacked are your weapon of choice is ranged, just take a sword and don't bother with this.

ITEMS: your slots should have estus flask, the black separation crystal and any thing else you think you might need in chase you are attacked. if you have enough time and the other party is not interested in trading you can use the separation crystal to get out of the world.

RINGS: take any rings you want based on what area you are in to do your trading.
entering a world.
the best method to enter a world is to use the red sign soapstone. you should do this because other methods give the impression that you are attempting to do what people using the item are normally trying to do. name your self something along the lines of "merchant" or "trader".
it goes with out saying that you should not do this in battle of stoicism.
where to trade
all places can work here, but the two that you should consider the most are

ANOR LONDO: in anor londo you are less likely to be invaded while attempting to get into a world, which is a bit safer for you to wait in. the downside is that the host is generally running all around and can be hard to find in the area as it is pretty large.

OOLACILE TOWNSHIP: this area has many people standing around waiting to be invaded or invade. you many be invaded while trying to get in, and if you do get in you many find the people there are waiting to fight and be forced too. the upside is you get in quickly and if you are in a big group of people with the same password it can work very well.
trading items.
you can trade different items for other items, here are some things that you can trade and a guide of what to take for them. in general you can take any thing for any thing.

SOULS: you can trade these for other souls (high amounts of low gain souls for low amounts of souls that give very little souls. they are sort of the base currency, so if you have enough you are able to trade for pretty much everything. as they are a limited resource you may need to trade for more should you use them a lot.

ARMOR: you can trade these to any one for almost any thing. selling full sets of boss armor plus the respective weapon or other sets you think look good could be exchanged for upgrade materials or humanity. other sets you have or do not want should be given back as you can only get a set once per a play through and generally have a high soul cost for the whole set.

WEAPONS: weapons can be traded for any thing as always, but the more upgraded the weapon the more valuable the things the other party gives should be. the same is true of rare weapons that can be farmed such as black knight and silver knight weapons. boss weapons should be the most high level items in exchange. if you can't use a boss weapon (such as a strength build being given a catalyst) give it back immediately.

RINGS: you can give these for armor or weapons generally, but any one offering a ring of sacrifice you should give them back humanity or a large amount of titanite chunks or a titanite slab.

TITANITE: titanite shards are worth hardly any thing, but chunks and large titanite shards are a bit more valuable, especially chunks. slabs are the most valuable and you should give people humanity or large amounts of souls, or valuable and or upgraded weapons. other types of chunk should only be accepted if you are interested in getting the type of weapon they apply too.

MISC/ CONSUMABLES: purple moss can be worth a little to a lot in different areas, green blossoms and divine blessings are very valuable, especially in hard areas. purging stones are not as useful but can be helpful in some situations. firebombs and dung pies are not worth that much all things considered, maybe worth a low gain soul item.
pine resins should be traded for soul items or other consumables.
transient curses fall into the same group as purging stones.
prism stones, cracked red eye orbs, Lloyd's talismans, and homeward bones can be traded for upgraded weapons.
humanity is basically the most valuable item in the game, only trade it for something that you really want or need.

the player trade entry on the dark souls remastered wiki provides more information about what can be traded.
doing a trade
when you find a person willing to trade items, drop a item (be very careful not to hit use item) then back away from it. wait for the other person to drop a item then walk up and pick up theirs.
if you are not satisfied with the offer, do the look skyward gesture (it looks like you are shaking your head) and drop the item they gave you, wait for them to drop yours back, pick them back up and try again.
if you are happy with a deal do the bow, proper bow, joy, or hurrah gestures to show this. if both agree, you can attempt another trade, or use the black separation crystal to leave their world, or just PvP or kill some enemies together.
